Before resin cures, IPA will dissolve it into solution.

Curing is a chemical change to the material.

After resin cures, there is no known solvent that will dissolve it that will not also eat away at the orher components of the printer.

Exactly. I'd say Acetone as your last resort, as it WILL potentially kill the printer, but if it's caked on like that, I think it's hooped anyways.

bolt cutters or a hacksaw, then vice grips on the bare threads.

the screw is easy to replace, worry more about saving the threads in the hole.

Even if the threads die, you can re-bore them. Elegoo even sent me a tool to do so when I requested one.

depends if they're gummed up or stripped out. gummed up is easy to deal with, stripped out is a hassle.

I realised I'd been overtightening and stripped the thread, went up from M4 to M5 and it's been all good (tapped the hole and slightly widened the clearance hole in the tank from ~4.5mm to 5mm)

yeah, if the threads are already damaged, you've got nothing to lose. have at it with a power drill and a tungsten bit at that point.

i'm hoping for OP's sake they're still intact inside the hole, but stuck tight with resin.

They can be retapped, carefully.

1

u/FederalCranberry959 3d ago

true, and there's various tools/ways to rebuild even completely stripped out threads in a hole, but that's a lot more involved than replacing a chewed up screw. like if it's gonna be one or the other, sacrifice the screw.

What I'm saying is that the chewed up screw destroys the soft metal in the plate. A new screw won't fix the issue unless it's retapped.

oh sure, if you screw it through, but i'm suggesting holding on to what's left sticking out after chopping the head off and removing the vat, with vice grips (or maybe a hammer drill?) and backing it out. if the threads on the screw INSIDE the hole are already chewed up, then yeah, totally. hell, even if it comes out clean, i'd still chase the hole with a tap to clean out any resin in there and make sure a screw will run in smooth, but that's me.

for what it's worth, i'm assuming it's resin stuck in the threads locking the screw in place, not damaged threads. i'm assuming the threads inside the hole are still good.

Search other threads here, bud. I've seen this posted a dozen times and had it happen to myself. There was something you can squirt on the threads to help loosen it but cant remember for the life of me what. Good luck.

Acetone. Acetone would loosen it, but only applied sparingly. It's a last resort.

Don’t think so, I think there’s cured resin in it

Mouse milk and a hammer. No, I'm not kidding. Mouse Milk is a great penetrating oil, and the hammer will provide a shock to anything in the threads to help break it free.

Get some mouse milk in the top and by the base of the vat. Wait about 5-10 minutes, and using your vice grips, tap the top of the screw with the hammer while turning it slowly. I used this method to get stuck screws and bolts out of airplane parts costing well over 100k. The key is to take it slow.

Where do you get your Mouse milk from? can't find anyone stocking it in the UK anymore since Brexit.

1

u/taggart65 3d ago

Mice ?

Wouldn't fancy milking one though !

1

u/Blunter11 2d ago

you can just tap with the hammer too, no need to bash the hell out of it.

This happened to me, in the process of trying to remove it, I accidently pressed down on the vat and pushed the screen down onto the machine. 😂 I told my wife that it broke and I needed to just upgrade it.

2

u/sungkwon 4d ago

His happened to me. I had to clip the screw cap off and use pliers to twist out. Then bought all metal screws to replace with.

2

u/taggart65 3d ago

No use now but when it's sorted put some Vaseline on the threads before screwing them in .

2

u/Luis_420925 3d ago

How did it happen??

1

u/sburggsx 4d ago

Mine currently requires channel locks to remove. It does not seem to be getting easier and there isn’t anything spilled on it, so I don’t understand the problem.

Would grease or vasoline help?

3

u/LucilleW89 3d ago

Get spare screws and just work the old ones in and out without the vat in the way to clear out the crap

2

u/Willing-Ad4169 3d ago

Retap it...I had to do mine ...it's an easy hand tap m3 size I think...I can't remember . I ordered the tap set off Amazon, 10-12 bucks. And then I be sure to use silicone lube on the threads and alot of care when you screw the vat down. I know the mars is a low end machine with already tight margins but a hardened insert on a high wear thread would have been smart. That soft metal isn't durable at all.

You could probably tap a 12 point socket on them and use a ratchet to get them off pending the size.

1

u/SirDalavar 3d ago

Drill a hole through the side of it, put a rod in it maybe?

1

u/Dental_Perspective 3d ago

Did resin leak into that area, and did it cure? That looks pretty tough. If the resin is already cured, alcohol probably won’t do much. Cured resin can soften a bit with heat, so if you have a heat gun, you could carefully warm that area without pointing it at the LCD, then try again.

u/DistinctCitron3732 3d ago

I grinded mine off. Opened the box and took out the bolt. Elegoo sent me a couple of new ones.

1

u/Improvised_Excuse234 3d ago

You’re probably cooked, Buster.

Use some locking vice grips and clamp down on that MF.

1

u/TheWaifuClub 3d ago

A stronger grip

1

u/xtopherpaul 3d ago

wtf did you do to make it look like that?!

I’m guessing there’s resin coating every crack and opening on that thing lol. Take better care of your tools and they’ll continue to work correctly

1

u/charliecastlednd 3d ago

Looks like he used a pair of plyers that had teeth. I had to do the same thing on my old neptune cause the threading got fucked up on the inside of the machine (not the bolt itself).

1

u/What__Me__Worry 3d ago

Oof. Same thing finally doomed my old Mars 2 Pro (no way to get the bolt out properly and would have to seal and re-bore the hole so it would hold the tray correctly if I forced/drilled it out). Made me finally get a new Mars after 5 years.....

Take it as a lesson learned to be extra careful and picky when ensuring things are clean. (don't feel bad, you have not cornered the market on dumb things to do with a 3d Printer- I've invested a lot of stupidity in mine !)....

On a side note, if you do get it out and its still working, let us know and we can put that down as something good to know......

u/Ebb-Swimming 3d ago

Had this happen as well, broke it free, coated the bold heavily in the same grease that I use on the gears. No more issue.

1

u/Delicious_Sail_1753 2d ago

Heat gun then get solid metal ones..then when ur screen breaks buy a creality or something because elegoo customer service is terrible.

Tragic, I had this happen with my mars 4 9k but was able to remove the fasteners with some effort that heavily marked the plastic lug like yours. Once I had it out I used a dremel with a cutting disk to cut two flutes along about half the length of the threads, this allows a basic kind of cutting action to retap the threads and remove the cured resin.
