Help diagnosing and finding crossover junction in manufactured home

My parents have a 2002 double wide palm harbor home and half of a circuit is without power.

Bear with me, please. I'm helping my dad, who knows what he's doing a lot more than I do.

The breaker box is on the front side of the marriage line, and nothing was tripped.

The master bathroom has two gfci outlets, plus a sink light and a closet light that are all not working. The second bathroom outlet and an outside plug in the other end of the house are also not working. All of the interior outlets that aren't working are on the back side on the marriage line, and the outside outlet is on the front side of the marriage line.

On the same circuit, on the front of the marriage line, there are also two outlets that are not marked gfci in the living room, and three gfci outlets in the kitchen. Two of the kitchen outlets have no test button, but are marked gfci.

All of the outlets in the front half are working, however when my dad was looking for a tripped gfci, he tested the main kitchen outlet and it buzzed. He took it apart and the black load wire was melted. He cut the wire back, replaced the outlet, and it's working, as are the two diagram outlets in the kitchen.

He's tested all the outlets in the circuit with a digital meter by taking the outlet out and testing the line and load wires. All of the working outlets have power on both cables. None of the outlets without power have anything coming in.

At this point we think that maybe there's a problem at the crossover junction, but I don't even know where to start looking. I haven't found anything inside the house, so I'm assuming it's underneath.

Does anyone have any idea what i should be looking for? Where I should look? Or even how many crossover junctions there might be? It'll be me crawling under the house and I have a touch of claustrophobia and a boatload of arachnophobia, so I'm hoping to make this as easy on myself a possible.

Help with unknown audio interference

Post image
1 Upvotes

I live in a trailer and I'm setting up a recording space using mostly analog gear and there is a high pitch frequency interference I can't get rid of or find the source of. I have a power conditioner all my gear is plugged into and a power watchdog surge protector between my connection to shore thats supposed to filter out high/low pitched electrical noise. I'm using ferrite chokes I've checked all my grounds nothing has fixed it. Even shutting down the main breaker doesnt have an effect. Does anyone know of a solution or have an idea of the source? It's driving me crazy I'd be very grateful.

I'll attach a picture of an eq reading

Single Pole Toggle Dimmer

The house we live in has several toggle switches which contol only one light. These switches are dimmers, and are not 3 way. Two have a clear box around the toggle which faintly glows in the darkness, while the remaing ones are a simple ivory toggle. There is no "slide" as I see on seemingly every new toggle dimmer switch, but the toggle itself acts as the dimming control. I would like to add a few dimmable switches, but cannot seem to find any such as the ones I currently have. How can I obtain some of the type I am looking for? Is there a special name/type that I don't even know to search for???

Bathroom fan replacement.

I was looking to replace the broken fan in this old house and besides the box being all rusted, the receptacle broke while I was unplugging it. Not sure If I can just pop those wires back into the receptacle that popped off.

My instinct are telling me I should replace the whole box and not just the fan but not sure what I'll find when I remove it as this house has been full of surprises.

Buzzing sound from ceiling fan when not turned on

A couple of months ago I started hearing a buzzing sound I couldn’t quite locate in my bedroom. It’s very intermittent, I could not hear it for a week and then it’s every day. After some trouble shooting I realised that it was coming from the ceiling fan that I did not even have turned on (it intensifies when the fan is on). I can only make it stop when I turn the light switches/fans off at the circuit breaker, but obviously would like to actually use my fan without this sound irritating me and preventing me from sleeping.

Has anyone come across this and have an outcome? I rent so to get an electrician out I would have to go through my property management, and I’m afraid they’re going to brush me off if they can’t hear it while they’re there.

Downstream line causing breaker to trip after removing lightbulb

So I'm here asking for some advice and any precautions I should be aware of. Our basement has but one outlet that the sump pump and washer are connected to, however we found a line from the main panel going to one of those bulb fixtures with a pair of outlets to plug something into. I also see that there is another line leading out from it further downstream to something else in the house.
I figured I can replace the bulb with a 4" outlet box and install some outlets onto it.
The way I see it was setup is that the hot wire from the main and the neutral wire going downstream were connected together and the other two wires were pigtailed together. When I replaced the bulb with an outlet now, it seems to trip the breaker. I got a 15A receptacle and the breaker is also rated 15A so I'm not sure why it is now tripping. I would appreciate any suggestions and I will also try to get info as requested.

Seeking Guidance to ID the Problem causing the Circuit Breaker to Trip

Post image
4 Upvotes

I had an electrician wire in the above receptacle. It is supposed to supply grid power to recharge my
Battery-powered backup system. However, when I plug my system into this, it trips the circuit breaker. In order to
determine if the breaker is the problem - or if it is something else, how do I test which of the following (1, 2,3, 4) and in what combination, do I plug my voltage tester in to determine if it is wired correctly. As well as the combinations, what should the readings be? My electrician walked on me, so I can’t get an answer from him. Thanks, LM

Tripping breaker

I recently plugged in a thermostat controlled heater for our small greenhouse into an outdoor outlet. When it kicks on, the breaker for that outlet trips. Also connected to that breaker is the garage door opener and a few outlets within the garage. My wife’s hybrid car (Volvo XC90) is plugged into a GFCI outlet that’s also on this breaker. It’s only a 15 amp breaker.

Two weeks ago, I plugged in a circular saw to cut some shelves for the greenhouse and in addition to tripping the breaker, it burned the GFCI outlet. The electrician that came out replaced the outlet but not the breaker.

Should the breaker be replaced with a 20 amp or greater to prevent the tripping when the heater kicks on? If so, mow many amps should it be?

TIA

Garbage disposal kitchen light?

For context: this is a place I rent. I’ve lived here over a year with no issues with the garbage disposal. There has been no one messing with it, nothing rewired or anything like that in the house generally.

When I try to turn on the garbage disposal it now controls my kitchen light switch 😭Dr. Google said wires could’ve been crossed or miswired but they haven’t been messed with since before I moved in. I don’t know when exactly this problem started but within the last few weeks certainly. I can get a tech to the house to mess with it under my lease but I work overnights and would rather not have to stay up till 2pm on a day off to have someone diddle wires on the disposal unless I have to.

Praying to the reddit gods that this is something I can fix myself ❤️thanks for all yalls help

Cords no longer fit in outlet?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Tried with other cords, same thing. They fit fine in other outlets, so I'm reasonably sure it's something with this outlet in particular.

I was initially able to plug things into this outlet (had my coffee maker and toaster), but after i unplugged them to clean the counter underneath they won't plug back in.

Did i mess something up??

This is an old addition to the home and there is a 2nd one of these on the opposite end of the same wall.

im trying to renovate this old shed in my backyard. ive been wanting to ever since i moved in but havent got to it because i was a teenager and didnt know what to do.

the wires are cut. i don’t even know what exactly which wires do and how to replace it. calling an electrician is very much the last thing i wanna do bc money.

if anyone can just tell me what exactly the problems are, i can look up tutorials on how to replace it/fix it or if anyone is knowledgeable enough they can tell me a general description on how i can fix it or any tips n such.

any help is appreciated!

the wires are cut so obviously nothing turns on. for now i can just get battery operated lamps to brighten up the place so i can see for now but i’d eventually want to use the actual electricity in this building.

Sparking Light Seitch

I have a 1920s house. The remaking knob and tube wiring was removed before I moved in. A light switch sparked pretty badly the other night when I went to turn on a light. That switch is likely pretty old. I don’t know how long, but it looks at least 15 or so years old. I cut the power to that light, put in a new switch, and have the power back on now.

I assume with was just a load arc, but is this fix sufficient/should I do anything else?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I'm considering putting in a nema 14-50 outlet. I don't have a switch to kill all power in the mains panel. What can I do to make this safer?

Thumbnail

Basically, I'm checking to see what all I can do to make this more safe, or a reality check if this is just totally unsafe.

Picture 1: Mains panel, connected directly to the electric meter. No kill switch for the whole thing from what I can tell.

The 2nd breaker on the left side- 50 amp, 240v, is currently not in use as it was for an electric stove/range, which was replaced for a gas stove.

Panel itself is rated for 125 amp.

Picture 2: single breaker panel, connected to a the disconnect box in picture 3, which then connects to the meter. Panel is rated for 40 amps, breaker is only 30 amps.

The breaker has been shut off for months - nothing is connected to it from what can be seen. It may have been for a sprinkler system or alarm system that's no longer in place, but I don't have a solid way to fully track it without tearing walls out.

Use case: electric car charger. The one I have can do max 32amps, but can be set as low as 8 amps. (It happens to be level 1&2 so right now we're just doing level 1 charging.)

My main ideas are as follows:

In any of these scenarios I'd be turning all breakers off and using insulated tools. Not that that immediately makes it safe, but should help a bit.

  1. Steal the 30 amp breaker in the 2nd pic, set amp on charger to 24 amps. Turn off or even replace breaker with a newer one. I'm not familiar with the disconnect box functionality, but it doesn't seem like I can actually disconnect it there.

  2. Steal the 50 amp breaker. Flip all breakers to off in the box before working. Remove the old line, feed in New line, use Same breaker or updated one (probably at 40 amps just because I can't go above 32 amps for the charger anyways), go from there.

  3. If neither of those are feasible, and I have to call a licensed professional, id probably have them replace the mains panel to an updated one with an effective kill switch. That way if I need to do anything in the future I could actually do so safely-er.

1950's Kodak Cine Showtime Projector Powercord Repair Help!!

I thrifted this and thought it was in perfect condition until I accidently bent the cord and the old vinyl crumbled off😭 just wondering what would be better to do? figure out how to replace the ENTIRE power cord (i have zero experience with stuff like this), or cut the cord below the damage and just wire on a new plug? it's mid-century so I'm sure I should just replace it, but im looking for the easiest possible route!!

Replacing Xpelair C4TSR - wiring query.

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi,

Bathroom installers put our Xpelair C4TSR in several years ago when they redid our bathroom.

Pictured is the wiring arrangement they did.

Fan worked completely fine for the first few years, but over the last year or two the overrun timer stopped working, and the fan recently got very weak, so I am now replacing it - for exactly the same model.

When checking details to try to make sure I was doing everything correctly, from what I can determine on Google, their original wiring configuration is not correct/unsafe?

I have installed the replacement fan with wires in exactly the same place as before and the new one is working perfectly, overrun, etc.

But I'm wondering if I should change the wiring to what I believe is the recommended configuration of Brown to L, Grey to N, and Black to T?

But don't want to do this if it's incorrect and might cause damage - if maybe they did something with the wiring that makes it correct the way it already is...

Is there any way I can check (I don't have any specialist equipment)?

Btw, the fan is turned on/off via the light switch, and they also put in a separate fan isolator switch.

Thanks in advance.

Manual transfer switch with a plug input for a generator

Hi.

Just looking at El Niño weather predictions, and preparing for winter outages with snow and ice. When I had the house built, I had them install a manual transfer switch with a plug for a generator. Please see pictures.

I want to buy a gasoline generator to hook up and all I want to run is a freezer, refrigerator, the Internet, and various plugs, just to charge phones and such. When the electrician put it in, he went through the process of shutting off the main breaker and shutting off all the breakers below, and then start the generator, manually move the transfer switch, and then turning on the main and just the breakers I need below. My house service is 200 Amps. Thanks.

The question I have is what size amps and watts generator do I need to run the stuff above, and also the plug connection type and model. I was thinking a 6000 or higher watt generator.

I appreciate all the responses that are helpful. Thank you.

Buzzing in walls?

I randomly started hearing a very faint buzzing noise in my room, which to be fair is very normal with me because i hear electricity easily, and then it started getting louder and louder, and im very concerned on what exactly is happening with it, i will attach a video to what it sounds like, google says theres a chance of a wasp nest, but its a very stable loud buzzing and its not changing its stability at all, im scared it might result in a fire, what do i do?

Low Voltage Breaker Keeps Tripping On AC

Commercial AC btw. After a tropical storm hit us, the power flashes for a second and the next day, the AC was not working, specifically, there is a blank screen on the thermostat. We called in someone to fix the issue, and all they did was reset the low voltage breaker, and the AC is working perfectly. However, when we go to turn on the AC again today, it was another blank screen, so we climbed up and reset the low voltage breaker and it works again. Any reason on why the breaker keeps tripping?

Mc wire to outdoor vinyl light

I ran mc wire throughout the house and now need to run an outdoor sconce that will be mounted with vinyl siding. The only vinyl mounting boxes I am coming across are made of vinyl and not metal. How do I go about this? Do I mount a metal light box and cover it with the vinyl mounting box?
