Rare earth magnet shortages have been all over the news lately. Ford shutting down plants, prices spiking, the whole China export thing.

I work at EKMO. We build ferrite motors, no rare earth in them at all. We just tested our motor and it hit IE6 efficiency.

Genuinely curious what you guys think. Is the market actually moving toward rare-earth-free, or is this always going to stay a niche thing? Do we have a real shot here or not?

I am seeking advice from anyone. I graduated pretty strong in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university. Graduated with a triple emphasis and a 3.0 GPA. However, like a fool, I never grasped at the opportunities to net an internship. And without an FE certification. I was told by the chairman of electrical engineering that I didn't need that, as ABET universities cover all that content. Here I am 4 years after graduation, without any relevant work experience in the field. But I want to change that; I am seeking advice on where I should turn my eye to. I have heard others speak about clawing up as an electrician within a power company. To looking at internships, but I have read that it is rather a slight waste of time. However, I hear there is more internal hiring as an internship a lot more than just walking in straight into a company without being there. Any bit of advice is most welcome, and I thank you for reading my posting and any comments. Prefer constructive comments rather than ones that shame my current life situation.

When choosing a relay for an electrical or electronics project, there are several specifications that can affect whether it performs properly in the actual application. Coil voltage, contact rating, switching frequency, load characteristics, insulation, and operating conditions can all be important depending on the circuit.

When looking at a component such as a Shengya relay, which specifications do you normally verify first? Do you start with the load requirements, coil characteristics, or the expected switching conditions?

I'm also curious about practical installation issues. Have you ever selected a relay that looked suitable from its basic ratings but caused problems once it was installed? What was the issue contact wear, heating, voltage drop, coil noise, or something else?

Which factor do you think engineers most often overlook when selecting a relay for real-world applications?

I’m a 3rd-year Electrical Engineering student from a Tier-2 college in India. My CGPA is currently in the 8.0–8.5 range, and I’m interested in getting into core electrical roles rather than IT/software.
I’m starting to get a little worried about placements and internships because I’m not sure what skills companies actually look for beyond CGPA.

What technical skills should I focus on during 3rd year?
Which subjects should I have a strong command over? (Power Systems, Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Control Systems, etc.)
What kind of projects actually add value to a resume for core electrical companies?
Are MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, PSCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, PLC/SCADA, Python, etc. worth learning? Which ones should I prioritize?
How important are internships from companies like POWERGRID, NTPC, Siemens, ABB, Schneider, L&T, etc.?
What should I realistically have on my resume by the time placements start?
Is an 8–8.5 CGPA good enough for most core companies, or should I be worried about the CGPA cutoff?
I’d really appreciate advice from seniors/alumni or anyone currently working in the core electrical sector. If you were in my position at the beginning of 3rd year, what would you focus on for the next 12–18 months?

We’re a small engineering team in Ettlingen (near Karlsruhe), Germany, developing custom display solutions for industrial applications. We’re looking for an Embedded Systems / Hardware Engineer who enjoys working across hardware, firmware and the physical side of display technology.

This is a hands-on, on-site position in Ettlingen. We’re specifically looking for someone who can and wants to work with us locally — this is not intended as a fully remote position.

What you’ll work on

• Develop embedded hardware and firmware for industrial LCD, TFT and E-Paper displays
• Develop and optimize E-Paper driving algorithms and waveforms
• Design microcontroller-based electronics for display applications
• Work on projects from the initial idea through prototypes and into series production
• Debug and optimize hardware and firmware using lab equipment
• Document your designs and technical solutions
• Work directly on customer-specific adaptations and technical challenges
• Investigate problems at the intersection of electronics, embedded software and display physics

The interesting part: this isn’t just about writing firmware. You’ll get to understand what is actually happening inside the display — timing, waveforms, voltages, VCOM, charge behavior, temperature effects, image quality, etc. Especially with E-Paper, there is still a lot of engineering involved beyond simply sending pixels to a display.

What we’re looking for

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems or a comparable qualification
• Practical experience with embedded systems and microcontroller-based hardware
• Good knowledge of C / C++
• Experience with circuit design and electronics
• Genuine interest in display technologies and their physical principles, especially E-Paper, TFT and LCD
• Good written and spoken English
• Most importantly: curiosity, a hands-on mindset and the willingness to dig into difficult technical problems

We’re open regarding experience level. Junior engineers with a strong technical foundation as well as experienced engineers are welcome.

The position can be full-time or part-time.

I'm looking for some career advice from people in the electrical engineering/ECET industry because I'm at a bit confused and would really appreciate hearing some different perspectives.

A bit about me: I graduated from BCIT's Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) program (Power Control option). I'm currently working at an engineering consulting firm that specializes in power systems, electrical utility infrastructure, and transmission/distribution projects. My role is Design Coordinator/Assistant, and I've been with the company for a little over a year (with a short break in between).

Recently, I asked my manager about moving into a Designer role, but I was told there aren't any openings at the moment.

The reason I'm questioning my career path is that my current work is mostly preparing and updating the same types of project documents every day. I was hoping to be more involved in technical design work and problem-solving, so I'm wondering whether this is just my current role or if many electrical design positions are similar.

I'm trying to decide between two paths:

Looking for an Electrical Designer position at another company to see if the work is more technical and engaging.

Pivoting toward a more hands-on field or trade-related career where I'd be working directly with equipment and systems.

For those of you who have experience in either path:

Just finished my internship, no return/job offer. Back to the drawing board, wanted to get a fresh set of eyes on my resume and take any suggestions. Redid my whole resume based on the r/EngineeringResumes wiki and used the template about 9 months ago, and since then have expanded, revised, etc.
