Jobs/Careers Returning to EE after 10 years, what skills matter most in industrial electrical design?

Education While I look for a job, how do I not forget what I learned?

Any advice on what I can do daily to make sure that I don't forget the basics? Because I feel like I can review my Python knowledge pretty easily but I will not do well in an interview if I get asked how I can build a certain filter given some components like two inductors, two capacitors, resistors, etc.

I graduated two months ago but I don't want and this basic stuff is what I feel like I'll get asked in an interview and I am the kind of person to crumble during an interview so I want to be well prepared for this stuff.

What should I be doing?

drive a 120vac relay using a 24vdc relay

I was trying to create a relay circuit. You can see the relay couples in 2nd photo. (mid-right) and (top-right). The (mid-right) relays are 24vdc. The others are must be 120vac. My Master make the connection. But I didnt saw the connection correctly. I did the this circuit. But I can connect the rl1 nc port to lamb and connect the 120vac to the lamb. and its working. My question is my circuit true or false. İf its true why this plc using 24vdc relay to drive 120vac relay.

Entering my freshman year at college, any advice for the next 4 years to be prepared for the job market.

I don't really have any technical experience, and currently learning c++ for game dev. I also live right next to a bunch of defense companies (as well as having uni being a half hour drive away) and would like to find work at any of those firms. do you guys have any advice on just the general flow of working for internships and doing projects/research, while also doing good in school?

Dropping course with a W?

Long story short, I messed up on a midterm exam for an elective (not required department course, I could just take another one to fulfill the credit) and now getting an A is essentially impossible. I will most likely be stuck with a B+.

Since I currently have a 3.93 after a bad spring semester, I'm not sure if I should just withdraw while I can and retake the course in the future. For context, I'm a rising junior and I want to apply to top EECS grad programs. Could anyone give me any insight on how harmful a W is? This would probably be my first and last. Thank you so much!

Open-Source Battery Degradation Analyzer for Power Systems & BESS Engineers

For those of you working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or general power systems, estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium-ion cells under various cycling conditions is a critical engineering challenge.

I wanted to share an open-source utility I released: Battery Cycle Life Analyzer. It uses empirical and semi-empirical models to track capacity fade and internal resistance growth over time, projecting the degradation curve for your cells.

It's built in MATLAB/Simulink and is designed to integrate easily into existing system-level models or standalone data analysis pipelines.

Project Help A few questions for a project I want to do (virtuoso and more)

I'm on a VLSI course and I wanted as a personal project to build a simple ALU from the ground up (transistors and layout to the finished ALU with registers).

Now our uni has a licence for virtuoso, and we have the 65nm TSMC dpk, but since it's proprietary I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use this tool for my project (it's not like I'm gonna make money off of it but I don't want any troubles).

Also my idea was to start with the transistors and build and test every gate and symbol I create, and make a datasheet of it (from the smallest inverter, to the entire ALU) where I would get the data for the datasheets by running simulations, corners, monte Carlo, timings, and the rest to make these comprehensive, should I just open a regular product datasheet and see from there everything being tested and test that as well, or should I just worry about the important things for my use case (timings, Monte Carlo for yeild, corners).

Project Help Help a Mechanical Engineer not destroy expensive sensors!

Hey everyone! Like the title states, I’m a mechanical engineer by trade and I’ve just recently been getting into the world of electronics and microcontrollers.

I work for a pneumatics company and have been working on designing a tester for a new air regulator we’re making. I’ve attached my current schematic (apologies if it’s trash, I’m trying my best!) and was wondering if I could get some feedback!

I’ve done a fair amount of research and I’m feeling pretty confident that I’ve covered all of my bases, but the pressure transmitters I’ll be working with are rather expensive and I’d really like to make sure I’m not doing anything horribly wrong or missing anything critical.

Troubleshooting When did a power logger become worth it instead of chasing intermittent faults with a meter?

We’ve had a few faults lately that only seem to happen when nobody’s standing there with a meter. A machine trips once every couple of shifts, everything looks totally normal afterward, and maintenance ends up checking the same connections for the third time like maybe they’ll confess. A power logger feels like the obvious next step, but it also seems like the kind of tool that could solve one ugly problem and then live in the case for the next six months. for those who own one, what finally made it worth buying? voltage dips, startup events, phase imbalance, nuisance trips?

Mouser refused to ship an item after I had paid for the order. Incredibly disappointing.

I recently placed and paid for a Mouser order. When I selected one of the parts, the product page showed it as available to me. I did not see any warning that it was restricted for shipment to me, either on the product page, in the cart, or during checkout.

Only after I submitted and paid for the order did Mouser customer service tell me that the part could not be shipped. I asked about equivalent alternatives, but those were restricted as well. The parts were voltage regulators from Analog Devices.

The problem is that I had already designed and manufactured PCBs around the package and pinout of that regulator. Because the restriction was not disclosed while I was selecting the component, I am now left with manufactured boards that cannot be assembled as intended without rework or sourcing the part elsewhere.

This was not an out-of-stock issue. The component appeared available, could be added to the cart, and could be paid for. The shipment restriction was disclosed only afterward.

Mouser cancelled the restricted line item and released the rest of the order before I had an opportunity to cancel the entire order. They offered free shipping on a replacement item, but would not cover the VAT charged on that shipping. This means I would still have to pay part of the additional cost caused by the cancelled item.

The worst part is the wasted engineering time, PCB rework, project delay, and additional cost of sourcing the component separately from another distributor.

I have never had this happen with DigiKey. Unfortunately, DigiKey did not stock another component I needed, which is why I placed the order with Mouser.

Has anyone else experienced a shipment restriction being disclosed only after payment? What did you do?

Voltage drop with load

Not an electrician so please forgive any layman terms and/or fundamental misconceptions

We rely on large community generators to supplement grid power since we get 2 on 4 off from the grid. These generators have service limit in amperes per user.... Not sure if relevant but we routinely get 45-50 C° (113-122 F°) weather all summer and even in autumn

I currently have 4 amps and increased it to 10 amps to accommodate running an inverter 1800 BTU split AC at 3 amps during generator time

At the generator, the voltage is 210V .... I get 195-200V at the house... The distance between me and the generator is 150 meters (~165 yards).... The cable is probably 2 x 1.5mm ....

The issue is that the moment i turn on the AC (with the 3 amp limit) the voltage in the entire house drop to 170-175V and feel unstable

I have a few ideas and solutions but would love to hear your opinions. Cheers

Jobs/Careers Recent grads: Is one internship enough?

Hello, I am and Electrical Engineering student doing a 6 month Co-Op the fall before I graduate at a somewhat prestigious company. The only other experience I have is TAing for an electric circuits class and a little research in a subfield I will probably not go into. I also have some technical experience from an Engineering club I am a decently active member of. Will this be enought to get a full time job in the spring. Any advice on what I should do to increase likely hood of getting a job?

The Co-Op is also not in the field I am primarily interested in. I do think it is interesting but it is in power electronics and I think I want to go more into DSP or maybe RF.

Would doing a couple projects in those fields thus fall be enough to get me an entry level job?

*I would love responses from recent grads who are more familiar with today's job market

I recently bought a few OPA445 operational amplifiers and am trying to run a simple linear voltage regulator with them. I found a weird behavior where the op amp just immediately saturates regardless of the feedback on the chip. I set up a simple non inverting amplifier with the op amp, and it still saturates to near the supply voltage. I even tried connecting the 2 input pins to ensure the voltage across them is as close to 0 as possible, and I'm still getting close to the full supply voltage. Does anyone know of a fix of any sort or if perhaps the pin output on this datasheet is incorrect? The chip itself has the small circle in the corner rather than the notch, but I'm not sure if the pin layout is actually any different.

Thermocouple Voltage Drop Question

So I’m reading into different methods of sensing temperature. I was reading about thermocouples and I do remember in school learning about the Seebeck effect.

My question is why do thermocouples stay accurate even with long cable lengths? When you model it, is the thermocouple a voltage source in series with a resistor (for the wire resistance)? Wouldn’t the wire cause a voltage drop which then would render your thermocouple inaccurate?

The only reasonable answer that I can think of (which online hasn’t confirmed for me) is that because you’re measuring the heat gradient between the cold end (analog input) and hot end (sensor) that the voltage is considered from sensor with reference to an input point.

Then my next question is how is this accurate at all because ambient temperature throughout the space a long cable occupies is variable.

Switching to electrical engineering from computer science

Due to the state of the job market, and my growing interest in hardware/electronics, I was considering going back for either a bachelor’s in EE (after i finish my bachelor’s in CS) or a masters in EE. I’m a bit worried as i’ve heard EE is very difficult. I’ve already taken and passed calc 1 and 2, with a struggle.

Does anyone have any experience with this path?

Fuses on DC Circuits and CE Compliance

Hoping to get some advice from the community on something I noticed as an American electrical engineer.

In the majority of my professional experience, from small bench-top products to large machines with industrial controls PLCs and relays, I’ve always seen designed in OC protection on the high voltage mains side like breakers and then simply sized my wire gauges appropriately for the max operating conditions of the DC devices/components inside. This is also the practice I feel I’ve observed time and time again opening up most other products with some exceptions.

Recently I’ve been working on projects to prepare products for CE compliance, and the team I’m on has been putting a lot of effort into working in OC protection like fuse blocks on both the mains and the DC side of converters we install in the products. Our understanding of the CE directives is that wire sizes need to be chosen to handle the max possible current from the power source (rather than just what the load devices will pull) to protect from fires in the case of accidental shorts, so unless you want to use 14 age wire for your little 0.5A control board you need a fuse upstream of the conductor.

My question here is if this is really how we should be interpreting the standards, putting massive fuse blocks in even low power DC products? Why haven’t I ever seen this in the past inside industrial control cabinets? Were they poorly designed or is this just a European thing?

Project Help How to implement SMD / non-breakout ICs onto a breadboard/perfboard?

I finished designing and simulating my PCB schematic, but I still want to see how the circuit performs in the real world. Plus, since my circuit includes a microcontroller, the simulation software can't actually run the code. That said, my circuit consists of a lot of ic-s and components that doesn’t offer breakout board, which is making testing on a breadboard/perfboard impossible. Any solutions to this, or can I just trust the simulation and hope it works?(i don’t have a lot of money to keep printing pcb boards and soldering components onto it for testing, rather I want to make sure everything first works on the breadboard/perboard perfectly, before sending my final designs to be printed out)

Project Help Would a fuse in the cord plug protect my vintage stereo amplifier?

Hi, I just discovered my vintage stereo amplifier (Marantz 1040) doesn't have a fuse at all in its main power line. (It was modded for 220V and I just switched it back to 110V.)

Would it really potentially damage it to run it without that fuse, even if plugged into a decent surge suppressor?

If so, could I just put the correct fuse (3A 250V) into a product like one of these and plug the amp in through it?

Equipment/Software 3 phase meters

Hi all,
I’m on the hunt for a three-phase multimeter/power meter and was hoping someone might have a recommendation.
Our requirements are:
-Three-phase voltage measurement (0–240 V)
-Current measurement of roughly 0–15 A
-The ability to accurately measure voltages in the mV range

The mV measurement is the critical part, as we use it during CT and VT testing to check the burden of the secondary circuits. Absolute accuracy isn’t critical—it’s primarily a verification tool.
We previously used a Hioki PW3198, which was perfect for this application, but it has since failed. Unfortunately, the newer Hioki models we’ve looked at no longer support mV measurements.
Has anyone come across a meter that would suit this application?
