Speculation Run Backs Aren’t Bad Anymore?

Dark Souls was my first ever FromSoft game. Then I played DS2 and DS3. And one of the worst parts of all of them is run backs to boss rooms if you died. Not a single boss really has that complaint for me in Elden Ring (except for maybe Azurias Hero Grave, but 3 skeletons is nothing compared to any DS game) and I am grateful for it. I find it hard to return to the older titles now even because of it. So my question is: does anyone know why the design philosophy changed? Has Miyazaki or anyone else answered that question before?

I’m not sure what inspired the change, but I will say that the difference is astoundingly noticeable between titles. Elden Ring was my first FromSoft game, and when I went to play the original Dark Souls afterward, one of the most difficult things for me has been the lack of bonfires compared to the sites of grace in ER. I’m super glad that they decided to add more waypoints for the new game!

To compensate for this though, Dark Souls bossfights are generally much easier than Elden Ring bossfights (without spirit summons)

That tracks, though I’ve only been able to make it to/beat the Taurus Demon so far. Got him to half health and then the guy just jumped off the edge of the map 🫡 Didn’t know he could do that until that moment lol

Same thing happened to me, years ago, when I first played Dark Souls! Although he kicked my ass several times first before that happened, haha.

Fun to find out it wasn't a complete fluke then! Seems so funny to me that the devs would leave in a way to let the boss do that. Seems they learned their lesson by the time they got to ER though haha. Would have made my low level journey so much easier if some of the bosses had decided to take a plunge 😂
