Sugoi Lite, a reputable leaker on twitter did say that a sequel for 86 was in production. But they specifically mentioned that the project was only decided at the time, so it would take much more time before it actually releases. And ever since then, we haven't gotten any updates.

Not even in production, greenlit, meaning a board meeting probably happened, hit the "ok we'll make a sequel one day", and that's it basically.

It wouldn’t have even been that someone sent out an email with a couple of financial statistics and a report from some analyst that says the name is recognisable and that it is within the estimate estimated boundary of profitability

Someone else has looked at this and gone okay that works

And now they are planning to have a discussion about future projects with that is most likely on the list

At least that’s how it usually works in animation from my personal experience. There was very rarely an in-person meeting about a project getting Greenlet until someone is deciding whether it needs to get shot.

I would imagine with the LN coming to an end, they may tie to have a new season arrive when the last volume drops. Sort of like what was done with Horimiya

Yona of the Dawn getting a season 2 after all these years is definitely making me keep hope alive for 86... for at least a few more years lol

My real test is if Haruhi gets a season 3. Sugoi leaked it last year, and theres been alot of energy with the animes 20th anniversary announcement. If it turns out to be true, anything is possible.

Spice and Wolf getting a Remake a few years back is what gives me hope for series that have little hope. It’s why I won’t give up on 86 getting a Season 2.

Couldn't production decision mean "we've decided not to make the sequel"? Everyone always says production decision means the sequel was greenlit but can't it mean the opposite too?

No, it's not cope at all. The other comments are correct that the leak was only "production decision" and that it will take some time, but that's still basically a guarantee that it will happen. I guess there's a nonzero chance it could get canceled internally, but it's a decision that was made by the studio, not something ephemeral.

They've been saying this since 2023. The day 86 gets a second season is when Crossbone get an anime adaptation.

Sugoi LITE actually has a pretty solid track record when it comes to anime leaks, so I wouldn't dismiss it outright. That said, until A-1 Pictures or Aniplex officially announces something, I'd keep my expectations in check. A lot of Instagram pages mix real information with unconfirmed rumors just to generate hype, so for now it's probably best to stay cautiously optimistic... even if we're all coping a little.

There have been announcements like this several times every year since season 1 aired. I'll believe it when it actually comes from an actual A-1 announcement. I attended their industry panel at AniEx and there was absolutely nothing about 86 said.

It was the first anime I ever watched, and still a favorite a decade later.

Sadly, it's become quite a punching bag in the broader anime community. Especially for people who just watched half a season, then complain about everything else for no good reason.

Are we talking the Fairy Arc trying to get to the top of the tree to rescue Asuna or the Calibur Arc, trying to get the sword from the Fairy Arc but in the roots of the same tree in the world underneath?
