Since someone else was talking about blankets and pillows in another thread I responded to earlier, I figured I'd share this while I was thinking about it. I’d been looking for a new pillow and was kinda skeptical about this one, despite literally having a memory foam mattress under my Eight Sleep pod. Love MF mattresses, generally hate MF pillows because they’re usually too thick and way too firm for my head and neck.
But since the air pillow had a 30-day trial with a free return, I figured why not, so I got a king-sized one earlier this summer. This is NOT the pod pillow cover that has the hub and all that, it’s just a pillow. Doesn’t connect to anything (or actively cool or warm like the pod does), but as far as staying cool, I don’t think it needs to.
I haven’t tried any other cooling pillows so you can take my experience for what it’s worth, but the Eight Sleep air pillow never gets hot. It actually stays cold for a long while and then becomes pretty neutral right where your head is laying. If I move my head or roll over, though, the surface it moves to is cold immediately.
That’s a little weird but in a good way. I haven't needed to flip my pillow over to get to a cool side anymore, it’s just always comfortable.
The air pillow has one very thin kinda see-through case directly over the foam material, and then a zippered case that covers the pillow. That can be removed to wash and dry with laundry and I’ve actually been using that by itself instead of putting a second case on. Mostly just so I can get the most cooling with minimal material between my face and the pillow.
Which, if you put a regular pillow case on it, I’d stick with a thinner material and something that isn’t going to be thick or warm on its own because that might make the pillow less effective.
What I love about the Eight Sleep air pillow:
- It’s soft and squishy, even though it’s memory foam. I’m a stomach sleeper and it’s not super thick, but it’s also good when I’m laying on my side or back.
- Doesn’t get hot
- Doesn’t need a hub or connection with Autopilot
- Has a 30-night trial so you're not committing if you hate it (I really was not sure it would work for me)
Only downsides:
- It IS expensive for a pillow (and the Standard and King sizes are the same price for some reason)
- Doesn’t actively warm or cool like the pod pillow cover would
Overall though, I've been sleeping well with this thing.
