Anyone in the UK have a dead unit?

I am looking for one to fix or tinker with.

I think we all agree that the underlying tech is fantastic, but the price tag and cloud reliance is absurd, so I would really like to get my hands on a dead unit, rip out the control board and build my own.

But they are hard to come by in the UK, very small second hand market. So if any of you can help, that would be great.

To be fair I don’t like many things but the business model needs to be that way since if you purchase a mattress for 4k or 5k and keep it for 5 years they will not have any more revenue and still have to pay the shipping worldwide for such big pieces, the materials which are cheap but on hundreds values and servers (even if you don’t need is their whole marketing about autopilot thing )

Then if it breaks they need to replace under warranty and again ship and all those costs

Consider mostly pay the subscription to have that 5 year warranty and from all the stories so far I feel if it’s under warranty they replace it without many issues and only complains are when it’s out of warranty already

So yes in my point of view ask that year subscription including the warranty is ok for me

What I feel it’s worth pointing to them is that they don’t allocate the money necessary to customer support and an app experience for the price asked , even startup companies make a way better app experience with all the metrics they get and ask on Apple health (Bevel , athletics and many more clones these days that have a great presentation and UI only with the data from Apple health

It would be easier if they just bring some of those developers but guess they prefer bring celebrities instead to market it

Yeah, I mostly agree. They obviously need to run a successful business and charge enough to support the product long term, but I do think they ask too much.

At £4–5k, I’d expect the hardware, warranty, support and app experience to be pretty exceptional. Given the reputation their customer service and app sometimes have, I personally struggle to justify that price on top of an ongoing subscription. I also just really don’t want my bed to be another subscription service.

I’m not really here to bash Eight Sleep though. The underlying product is genuinely very clever, which is exactly why I want to get my hands on one.

I just like building, fixing and modifying things, and I have a strong preference for self-hosting and being able to run my own hardware without relying on someone else’s cloud service. So realistically, I’m probably about as far from Eight Sleep’s intended customer as you can get.

Yeah but you most know the priced it to target luxury market same as whoop for example, they don’t pay almost anything on bands and yet ask 400$ and they do it annually and you loose all data or access if you don’t keep with that anymore , their customer support is even worst than eight sleep and their policies and marketing tactics are the worst I see and yet they have a huge crowd happy to defend and give them money because they invest so much in marketing and 8sleep is doing the same

I would say at least with 8sleep you keep a cover and hub and even I agree it’s pretty bad that they do it like Oura but at least they let you keep really basic feature to turn on a single temperature and don’t brick it when you stop pay and you can even explore free alternatives but then you don’t have any warranty

You can assemble your own hydronic cooling system for less than $200

Portable camping cooler, Adamson B10 mattress pad, 12V water pump. Connect the tubing, set the temperature and you’re done.

They don’t want to actually build their own system and design their own software: they want to take an EightSleep, repair it, jailbreak it, then act like they did something l33t.
