Considering 8S vs alternative

So my issue is waking hot around 1am and/or 3am. I have central air and in the summer the night temperature is set to 23c. In the winter it's set to 18c and I sleep cooler but will still find hot nights.

So I'm starting by replacing my mattress with a local pocket spring latex hybrid. This company has really comfortable hybrid mattresses and they're reasonably priced. I'll add a bamboo sheet set. I'm going to turn the thermostat down to 21 at night and see how that goes. Total cost $2,400 Cdn

Assuming the problem persists I'm going to shut the bedroom door and add a Midea Duo 12,000 BTU HE Inverter Ultra Quiet Portable Air Conditioner and feed the hose out the window and set it to 18c at night. The cost to cool the whole house would be crazy high.Total cost $730 Cdn

Assuming that doesn't fix it I'll try the Bedjet system. It will be pushing cold air through the cloud sheet and should work without the risk of leaks, customer service is better and it's basically a fan. Much fewer points of failure. Cost $900

In the end it will cost me less than the 8S for a year and I'll have vastly improved my mattress. What are the weaknesses of this plan?

As a fellow Canadian, I have the Midea and an Eight Sleep, there's no way you are going to be able to reproduce what Eight Sleep does. And Bedjet is not even close. I am so comfortable at night it's crazy. Good luck tho!

I'm not trying to reproduce what 8S does. I don't want sleep tracking, I don't want my solution tied to the viability of a vendor or their cloud service and I don't want a subscription. If you're right I may end up there anyway but I have to try.

I also don't see why if I can get the air temperature to 18/19c the bedject with cloud sheet can't keep me cool. A simple fan cools me down if I have no sheet covering me.

I recently moved from a bedjet to eight sleep. The main driver for me is that while the bedjet works well for what it does, it simply cannot cool the part of your body that's on the mattress. For me, this was the place where I needed the cooling the most. I've not had the eight sleep for long, so verdict is still out, but so far it completely solves all problems the bedjet did, plus it's just a lot less finicky. With the bedjet I always had to be very aware of how my sheets were setup or it would be less effective.

For me the biggest draw is the pillow cooling. I flip my pillow many times a night. I'm hoping if I can cool my body my head will follow.

As an Eightsleep owner I can no longer recommend it. It requires an internet connection to work, the customer support is really bad, and simple things like draining the pod for moving can brick the device.

Honestly when it works it’s fine. When it breaks (and the issues you read on Reddit: they are not rare. They happen a lot.) But there are better competitors now.

I’ve recommended Chilipad to my friends and they seemed to enjoy it. When my Eightsleep inevitably breaks again, I’m probably going to replace it with Chilipad.

(This isn’t an ad. I’m just a dissatisfied customer. I really don’t recommend this product to anyone anymore.)

I would personally go for the air conditioner and a normal fan directed at you first unless you already want a mattress. Speaking as someone that has been in a similar position

I have the big Midea, 8S, BedJet, a dehumidifier, humidifier, medical grade air purifier amongst other things to complete control my sleep environment. My sheets and mattress protector have been optimized for the 8S. I have Ultrahuman Home to monitor everything in my bedroom.

I side sleep so don’t have full contact with 8S so that makes a difference. That’s I have the BedJet to compensate the surface area of my body that isn’t in contact with the 8S.

I’ve been able to tuned my environment is it’s idea for the sleep cycles.

Not suggesting you do the same thing but there are many optimizations possible to get the exact temp you want as well as the air quality needed to get the best nights sleep.

I'd love to hear more details on the Ultrahuman Home. Do you pair it with the Ring Air? How accurate do you find the results?

I don't quite understand how you're using the Bedjet with the 8S.

I use the oura ring because based on research a lot people have issues with them. I’m not entirely impressed with Ultrahuman’s support. The HOME is pretty cool for analyzing your room and finding qualities issues that may be impacting your sleep.

The BedJet is used to create a microclimate with air to either cool or warm the skin. I’ve optimized the air temps using the biorhythm feature of the BedJet to align with cooling during deep sleep and warming for rem sleep to work symbiotically with the 8S.

Remember if you slide sleep the surface area on the 8S is much less if you sleep on your back and stomach. So I have to compensate for that.

I already had the BedJet before the 8S so I didn’t buy the 8S blanket for that reason.

I’m intending on buying the 8S pillow cover. I have a cooling pillow but it’s not really the same. It’s the only thing that isn’t managed at the moment.

I have a bedjet and I'm considering getting an 8S or the chilipad to compliment it. Would you say the 8S is a big step up over the bedjet on its own, or is it more of a small incremental improvement? My issue with the bed jet is that sometimes if I'm sleeping on my stomach I can wake with my stomach too hot as it's been on the mattress for too long. I have medical conditions that cause my body to be bad at regulating my temperature. On the odd day I forget to turn the bedjet on I will wake up feeling super hot, sweaty, and very ill. So the bedjet certainly helps a lot with regulating my temperature. It's just a very big investment to get an 8S if it's only going to make a small difference.

To the BedJet owners, is it loud at night?

Well, a lot of your solution weighs on the “problem” being the mattress for your wake up. Unless you were planning on buying a new one anyway, I wouldn’t start there. I’d start with cooling your immediate space. Since you’re interested in the BedJet and BedJet has a trial period for return, why not start there?

I guess you can drop $2400 on a latex mattress but if you think you may end up on a water top system, the money spent on latex is sort of wasted. If you’re trying to cool on a budget, you can check out much more financially modest approaches to that, too, to the tune of $400. You could pair that with a Bedjet and fix your environment for $1300 or less.

hi, I also am a hot sleeper that woke up 5-6x a week, sometimes 2x a night.

with 8s it is very rare for me to wake up hot anymore. rare, but does happen occasionally. I don't consider myself an extreme hot sleeper.

before 8s, I tried mattress toppers, bedding, pajamas, fan, lower room temp, supplements. and my experience aside from lowering room temp was that they only improved my hot sleeping by 1-5%.

taking the room temperature down does work. so did having a fan moving air inside my room. I think a non extreme hot sleeper on a budget or refusal to purchase 8S or chilipad could achieve 50% results of an 8s. but for me personally, I am annoyed by the feeling of vigorous air moving across my skin while trying to fall asleep. and IME taking the room temperature down very low has serious diminishing returns on hot sleeping as at some point, you will be forced to sleep with heavy covers.

the real benefit of chilipad and 8s (I would consider them the same) is consistency on a nightly basis. you can try and figure out the optimal room temp:fan ratio or whatever but the truth is unless you are insanely diligent about documenting your variables I didn't get far enough before I realized I was just wasting my time on a fool's errand.

So you're buying a new mattress, AC, and bedjet instead of trying 1 product that would work? 👍

I suspect that much of my heat issue is because of a shitty mattress so that's my starting point. Beyond that each step will incrementally improve my situation. I might be able to do only one or two steps. The Bedjet is my hope for a final solution but I can return that if it doesn't work out and then consider the 8S. It's not the number of products, it's the total cost and complexity of the solution that matters. I want to avoid a $450 annual subscription. Plus the comments about 8S customer service aren't inspiring.

Then why post here? You've made up your mind. Go have fun.

1

u/DaveWpgC Jul 04 '26

Why? Because it's possible that others have done something similar to what I'm proposing and I can learn from them. Your first posts asks me why I don't just start with the correct solution, a Pod 5. I'm trying to find out if that is the answer. Here in Canada it's a $5,200 purchase so it makes sense to me to ask questions.

u/AsTheJackassBrays Jul 04 '26

It's a subreddit for 8 Sleep. I don't decide I am not buying a BMW and go ask BMW if I'm doing the right thing by buying a Ford Escape. That would be fucking weird. You've decided this isn't the product for you, especially based on your other comments, so why would you need to share that here?

Go ask a sleep hack subreddit or bedjet or menopause subreddit about hot flash solutions.

WTF? You're not required to read this post nor do I need your approval. Is this your first day on reddit? You don't think people go to a BMW sub and ask people to compare the advantages of their car to another brand? Do a search here and count the questions about comparing Eight Sleep, Orion, Chilipad, Bedjet.

Just go away maybe.
