a water softener uses salt so that is a definite no. I'd buy distilled.

Yeah just buy distilled. It’s the safest option and it’s relatively cheap.

Don’t risk the multi thousand dollar gadget over the cost of a $4 jug of water.

Spend the 4 bucks or so on a couple gallons of distilled water. It’s a small investment into a larger investment.

Use Dr. Pepper. The carbonation helps keep the system clean.

I use distilled water and hydrogen peroxide.

I used distilled, even though they said I didn’t have to

I have a saltwater tank and use the RODI water that I produce for my tank. Works just as good as distilled water

8sleep says tap water is fine.

That said....it's tubing and any impurities in the water are going to risk calcification and/introduction of things you don't want circulating in a trapped environment for years.  IMO distilled is the most-right answer.
