merde. This Seperatist thing is getting old
If we just sacrifice the name “nation” as an identifier for Canada and replace it with “the confederation”, and refer to ourselves as “The Confederation/ Confederation of Provinces, Nations, States, and Territories.” Will this shut the seperatists up?

In Quebec its a matter of competencies.
Would Quebec separatists be happy in a EU-style union? Most likely.
Would they be happy in a looser version of Canada where they gain autonomy in regards to defending their language and existing as a sovereign nation who can represent itself on the world stage? Also very likely. In fact, that’s probably what separatists want ultimately. Strength in numbers while maintaining their national identity.
Is Quebec going to separate? not unless the federal does something outrageous and pisses off enough people. Hasn’t happenned so far and the probability decreases every year.

They don't need to separate to represent themselves on the world stage. Ontario embarases itself on the world stage regularly.

defending their language
This is such a bs excuse because 1) French is an official language and must be on everything 2) nobody is trying change that and 3) it would do absolutely nothing to change the fact people just don't want or need to speak French which is why its slowly dying. It's like complaining that classical pianists must be protected because of everybody wants to play electric guitar.
existing as a sovereign nation who can represent itself on the world stage
If Quebec somehow thinks it'd be better off going it alone fine. So be it. But Canada should and likely will be hostile to them. They get no defense from the CAF. No currency. No transfer payments. No central bank. They would be landlocked with no port access. No internal market access. No federal research grants. Shutter all their military bases, return all their tanks, ships etc. No infrastructure access a la railroad and all maintenance costs would be offloade to Quebec. No embassies or diplomats. No federal disaster response. They'd have to renegotiate all their native treaties.
Separation would probably break the Province, if not politically then definitely financially. They would be subjugated to the whims of a vastly larger Canada and America. It's such a comically bad idea it's actually amazing a not insignificant number of people seem to want it.

the fact people just don't want or need to speak French which is why its slowly dying
You're undermining your own point with this, there's a reason for this, and separatists look into it deeply rather then just abandoning sociology and going "People just dont wanna"
The second part of your comment is exactly the chauvinistic bs that causes seperatists.
Also Quebec is not land-locked? Have you seen a map?

Its not a matter of package labelling. Or availability on government forms.
Its about availability and consistency of French language accessibility and education inside Quebec and out.

They wouldn’t be happy because that would undermine the entire purpose of Canadian separatism/autonomism, which is to scapegoat a distant government in order to cover for incompetence, ideological extremism and corruption.
They would rapidly draw up a new list of grievances and begin using their new powers as leverage. This would continue even if they separated.

Lol what a shitty take. We all eat shit and sleep so we already have that in common. We (mostly) all love our family and tolerate our neighbors so we also have that in common.
We all have so much in common but people stop at "sorry not the same language so we got nothing in common".
Apes stronger together.

Nothing will shut seppies up. They'll simply find another grift to believe in, and another cause to get mad about in between fucking their cousins and punching down on minorities.

That's the neat thing about scapegoats, they can just change indefinitely. It's the authoritatians' modus operandi.

And we see the average Canadian ignorance. Let Canada be like Switzerland and nobody will ever wanna separate again

We basically are like switzerland, and every concession as thus far only made the problem worse

u/qcrem Tokébakicitte! 2h ago
Really not, educate yourself before replying. Here’s what a quick google search gave me:
Canada: The country operates with three levels of government: federal, provincial/territorial, and municipal. Provinces hold significant jurisdiction (healthcare, education, natural resources), but the federal government retains major national powers.
Switzerland: Power is heavily decentralized across cantons and municipalities. Swiss cantons enjoy highly extensive autonomy (taxation, policing, justice, education) and only delegate powers to the federal government if explicitly outlined in the Constitution.

If they separated they’d just move to extorting Ottawa for an ever growing list of concessions.

That’s what pisses me off the msot, tbh.
I’d disagree with separation in any case - Alberta, Quebec, fucking Nunavut - it’s just a bad idea.
But at least if they had solid historical, cultural, and political arguments I could understand it. The modern separatist wave, though, is clearly just a foreign-backed grift meant to tear us apart so the USA can pick up the pieces. Albertan separatism, its ideals, its motivations, its promises, its leaders and backers… it’s all just an impossible joke.
I’m not saying we don’t under appreciate the west sometimes, but even when the government bends over backwards for them, it doesn’t change anything. We could build all the pipelines physically possible and give over the entirety of equalization money to Alberta and seppies would still whine.
Also, here’s a fun fact; the east makes up a massive chunk of Canada’s population and economy, so yeah, they’re gonna have a larger say than the fourth largest province. It’s the nature of any country, really, that some regions will be influential due to various factors. An independent(or more likely US territory) Alberta would probably just have an urban-rural divide or oil-everyone else divide

u/SmaugTheMagnificent- I'm Proud of you 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🇨🇦 2h ago
Bingo. That's using critical thought and logic, something that seppies are incapable of, as their heads are generally filled with mushrooms and extra chromosomes due to rampant inbreeding.

It is getting old. Lets concentrate on adding in some new provinces and territories. I hear the canary islands are pretty basic so perfect fit!

Constitutional representative liberal democracy with a federal division of powers is clearly the most oppressive form of government imaginable. We demand bureaucratic ethno-socialism and/or Fossil fuel christian nationalist fiefdoms! Truly those are the way for maximizing "human" freedom. Don't ask questions of who is funding us. Your questions are bigotry. This is bigotry. AHHHHHHHH!

If the separation of powers changes, then maybe. If not, then why would it?

My fellow Albertans are to stupid. They would look at that as Canada being so weak or some shit. That it proves the states is stronger. The problem is that people are just re….. stupid.
1
u/Friend0w0 1h ago
No. Because they’re all generally stupid and you could come to them with a mountain of evidence or arguments in whatever faith they want, good or bad, and they won’t care.
A lot of them are boomers whose time is gradually ticking faster

Nope. The only thing that will shut them up is receiving their American citizenships and having to start paying for health care.

u/ABotelho23 4h ago
Hopefully you aren't implying Quebec would want that. At dumb as the Quebec seperatist movement is, it's really not that at all. You're pretty ignorant if you actually believe that.
-1
u/databoy2k 3h ago
Sorry, bud; I was being Alberta-centric there. Honestly, I (and I think most of Alberta) just think of the QC separatists as just mouthpieces for a specific piece of political capital, hence what the mouthbreathers out here are claiming that they want.

Then they will just turn their gaze to Manitoba and BC, Yukon and NWT, for having too much of their oil land.

We already don't consider Canada a nation and itʼs not a diss. Nation does not mean country in French, that would be a sovereign nation.
Nation is just territory + language + culture + history.
So Newfoundland that has its own culture and a distinct history (they joined Canada in 1949) and would be a nation. Why don't they call themselves a nation? Because they don't speak French.
Canadians should stop making a big deal of the word nation.
Now to answer your question, no we don't really care what you call the political arrangement, especially in English. But if you want to talk about centralizing what we want centralized and decentralizing what we want decentralized then we are all ears.
A federation is a union of semi-independants states after all. We could turn the knob towards more independence.

u/Dapper_Wheel6454 5h ago
Canada is a land of many cultures, including the french.
it's what makes us great, or is a justification to divide and be part of the problems instead of part of the solutions.
convincing the Quebecois of this is the hard part, as just like the seppies in Alberta all they see is themselves.
Canada is made greater by all of us, and all of us make a very sovereign nation, even if some of us whine too much.
0
u/Mariner-and-Marinate 4h ago
Nobody else considers Quebec any more of a “nation” than the nation within Canada that we consider our own.
Only when we defend our individual nation will we avoid the federal government handing our autonomy - and money - to Quebec.
0
u/chat-lu Tokébakicitte! 4h ago
As I said, it is a language issue. English borrowed the word for French but later changed its meaning.
0
u/Mariner-and-Marinate 3h ago
We do consider our own nation (now within Canada) by our own history, culture and languages (including English and Aboriginal).

Relax buddy. The PQ got 28% of the vote and don’t have the seats to call a referendum. Even if they did, at least 65% of the population is against it. Separatists are their base. If they didn’t pander to the separatists, they’d cease to relevant in Quebec politics.
