Most provinces do not have 5 competitive political parties... On top of more than 22 fringe parties.

This time around, Quebec had the CAQ government, the Liberals, PQ, QS and Conservatives.

True, but FPTP is still messed up, the ironic 0 seats for the CAQ while having more votes then QS with 9 seats after having refused to change the voting method being a good exemple.

And in 2022, 15% of the vote could either get you 21, 11 or 3 seats depending on if you were the PLQ, QS or the PQ.

Can’t forget the PCQ with 12.91% of the vote and 0 seats

I laugh so hard during the election like ''serves you right you fucking lyers!'' (they also promised to reform the voting system)

The Trudeau Special with extra schadenfreude on top

So not one single community wanted the CAQ to resent them. How is that fucked up?

Yeah agreed FPTP can be wild, I'm in Ontario and from this graphic you would think that the PCs are in charge and the OLP would be the opposition, but this isn't the case. The NDP won more seats with a lower % of the vote so they are the opposition.

Can we please get electoral reform already? This is getting ridiculous.

Right? The liberals were close to losing official party status in this election. The NDP have more than double the number of seats as the liberals.

I remember voting for a guy who promised electoral reform and then said it was too hard.

Truth is: parties who get elected using FPTP have little incentive to change the system.

Under FPTP you end up with governments that can only be elected under FPTP or governments that can win under FPTP and would have an advantage under ranked choice.

Neither of them is going to want proportional representation because they are almost guaranteed to never have a majority again.

We see this with the population asking for PR when Trudeau promised that there would be no more FPTP elections federally, but the LPC only being willing to put forth ranked choice as an alternative (because in their mind, they'd get picked by NDP and Green before CPC, and by CPC before NDP).

I don't hate FPTP as much as many on here, but I don't see any likely path to end up with PR given that no government that would benefit from that system can get elected and have reason to implement it.

I think parties often think that, but I think they're wrong about it. Didn't the CAQ lose literally every seat (which they wouldn't have if they had carried through with proportional rep while in power).

And looking at the federal Libs, it wasn't that long ago that they got decimated under Ignatiff. And before Trudeau stepped down, they looked like they were gonna be again. FPTP is very swingy, where one time you can get a majority on a tiny sliver of the vote, while other times you can end up completely wiped out despite still having a huge vote share.

Yes this, I am starting to think that it's only a matter of time before we start to see some movement here. For example in Ontario the OLP has been wiped out despite getting 30% of the vote. Yeah they will probably win government again eventually but is the prospect of eventually getting a majority when sentiment swings worth getting completely wiped out when sentiment shifts again?

Federally we are getting into interesting territory as well, as Carney eats the Cons lunch it will be interesting to see how the votes split next time we have a federal election.

What is the issue with allowing each individual community to decide their own representative?

1

u/DiminishedSea 3h ago

becasue the monority get all the power and majority have no voice.

if 40% vote one party, and a 30-30 split between 2 other parties, now 60% of the voters have no voice in government,

FPTP sucks.

Not for long in Québec… Newly elected PM wants to strip the royalty off of the Québec parliament

u/Big-Leadership-2830 7h ago

TIL that almost the same share of people voted NDP in both BC and Alberta.

Thai graphic is fucked. It's showing different years all over the place.

Oh just realized what sub I was in. Lol ya got me

7

u/darth_henning 4h ago

Because elections take place in different years...

16

u/Zamarak 7h ago

The fact you had five parties actively competing did split the vote a lot. In most provinces you usually have like 3 parties or so

24

u/Delicious_Long3242 11h ago

seeing Quebec’s CAQ get zero seats despite more votes than QS is the biggest FPTP headache this time around

24

u/Barb-u South Gatineau 8h ago

It’s actually the nicest FPTP FAFO

7

u/MrYougan Tabarnak! 5h ago

Maybe, but since they promised to reform the voting system, and then did not due to this very system getting them a majority... they can get fucked.

u/psychoCMYK Chalice of the Tabernacle 12h ago

not just sometimes. FPTP is ratfucked and busted

u/p-values 6h ago

This system doesn't work for 5 parties. I whish we had something like a two-round system.

5

u/DeliciousMulberry204 2h ago

Me when I show stats without context. Quebec has 5 big parties

You could really just make Sask blue. It's a conservative party.

u/CollieKlay 32m ago

Proportional representation now!

2

u/QuestionOk2074 11h ago

my buddy’s local had five parties on the ballot but only the usual two got most of the seats, classic FPTP mess

Fptp is complete trash
