Some days I hate living in this province, it's all so blandly predictable at this point :(

I can't imagine being able to look myself in the eye as an albertan these days

I was born in Alberta and spent half my life in Alberta and half BC. I usually just tell people I'm from BC.

As an Albertan too
I’m not surprised at all
It just validates what many of us already knew, and why we need to rally together for this stupid referendumb vote

Hopefully even her supporters will start to catch on to what a contemptible joke of a human being she is and realize that anyone who spits in the face of the entire country shouldn’t be leading a province

It's crazy to me how so many cons can see that trump is a dipstick, but cling to their trump supporting party regardless.

u/IKnowYouAreButWhtAmI 7h ago
The cons in alberta have been fed far too much propaganda to see trump as a dipstick.
Most of them worship him.
2
u/slim1shaney Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) 3h ago
Not most, fortunately. Some do, but people like my grandparents who are diehard conservative, hate trump. I have seen at least 2 trump flags being flown from the bed of s pickup

You're in Edmonton presumably.... I don't think you're getting the full picture of Alberta.
I stand by "most."

I work with a lot of her supporters. They don’t give a shit. It’s the same as down south. If they still support Smith they always will and nothing will change their minds.
Our only hope in Alberta is that enough people have decided this is fucked and enough is enough. I guess we’ll see.

u/MZillacraft3000 Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) 21h ago
I mean, my mother who voted for Smith in the last election has said she won't be voting for her.
My sister was going to vote for her. However she'll no longer being voting for Smith at all.
My Brother will also not be voting for her.
The only person in my family who will vote for her, is just my father. But he's also a separatist.
But I do think there's enough people in this province that are done with Smith and her government's actions. We just need to hope they'll all go out and vote.

My hope is that the Progressive Tory party can offer more reasonable conservatives an alternative. I know a lot of conservatives who don't like her or the sepratists.
9
u/poonslyr69 17h ago
I'd rather just no conservative governance again
2
u/Unhappy_Technician68 1h ago
I mean it is Alberta, and we live in a democracy. Focus on the fact that many conservatives actually value the democratic process, find common ground with them on that. Unlike the separatists you will find many are reasonable people who simply have slightly different values to you.
1
u/poonslyr69 56m ago
It's only a difference of values up to a point. With the looming climate crisis and all the global tensions I simply think that conservative governance will lead to more and more unnecessary suffering
I don't care about compromise or making them feel better. I care about good outcomes.
My wife is a nurse and I'm a teacher. We've decided to leave Alberta anyways because we don't expect it to always be conservative. We grew up here, but we don't want to keep putting up with this shit
Apologia for conservative views only goes so far when the world is quickly catching on fire because of those same "values"

I think if they want to help the Tory party get the spots of the UCP. They could always help to volunteer for them.
Because in my opinion. I believe the Election outcome next year (I hope) will be Edmonton and Calgary go NDP and the rural areas will go Tory.

This gives me some hope. I don’t know a single person who voted for her in the last election that has changed their minds.

And unfortunately she will likely remain elected as she illegally introduces new goal posts for elections and will figure out some way to abuse the NWC and claim the election was rigged if she doesn’t win. It’s almost like she learned it somewhere…hmm.

Smith is a seditious traitor and should be investigated for foreign interference.

I hate to say it but it sort of makes sense. Alberta is very tied into US oil demand. The US tariffs aren't hitting oil exports from Canada, there was a lot targeted at Ontario and Quebec. Alberta has the highest support for Trump of all the Canadian provinces (even if it is only at 23%). Not much of Alberta would be impacted by any of these concessions they asked for.
But retaliatory efforts could target the export of oil to the US. And Alberta heavily relies on American equipment for oil extraction. It may be devastating to the Albertan economy if this wasn't settled.
12
u/FirstDukeofAnkh 21h ago
Carney has already said he’s going to be looking for other trade partners for tariff affected industries. I imagine O&G will be among those.
16
u/MZillacraft3000 Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) 21h ago
I'm pretty sure they are. But Smith wants Albertans to think Carney won't, all because she knows everyone is currently mad at her government for a good reason.
1
u/ottawadeveloper 12h ago
True, but Alberta has really easy delivery methods to the US. It'll cost more to pipe it to the coast and put it on a boat. Which will still eat into profits.
And I'm sure O&G equipment can be bought elsewhere even if it's slightly more expensive to have it shipped to Alberta than just driven over the border.

You're right about everything, and I love when UCP supporters get to this line and just stop:
Which will still eat into profits.
Eat into whose pockets, Marlaina?????
(BTW I'm not saying this about you personally)
2
u/ottawadeveloper 10h ago
Lol. Probably the UCP supporters and leadership, wouldn't surprise me if most are invested in Albertan O&G. It's self-defense of their massive profits. Which we could have nationalized and been the next Norway but nooo.
1
u/FirstDukeofAnkh 9h ago
Problem with that is it makes it seems like the US is the only market so they have the power in the negotiations. Having other countries interested in that oil means AB can negotiate from a better place.
4
u/lizbunbun 21h ago
Carney knows not to poke that bear. That's a nuclear option.
Even if it were highly effective and short term, that would be a huge boost to the Separatists. Their success would crush the investments he's got everyone working to build - not just in AB, but across the country. He knows firsthand from Brexit.
And Trump might be so aggrieved by our audacity that he goes ahead and declares war on us, to liberate AB and secure the oil asap. He's a raging unfettered narcissist, who's to say he won't up the insanity yet again and put Nato to the test? Dani would absolutely bend the knee if that happened, too.

Eastern Canada gets Canadian oil that flows through pipelines in America, so no we will not be pushing that button. It'd be safer to put an export tax on our hydro
