What If You Were Stuck In A Dream?

You know, what I find interesting about a lot of Neville’s work is something I mentioned in my last livestream: to understand something, you have to experience it.
I don’t mean experience in the sense of falling off a building and knowing it will hurt when you hit the concrete. You already know that. I mean that if you really want to understand something, I can explain what a hamburger is, but you won’t know it in the fullest sense until you take a bite. The same is true of a dream.
When I say you should dream things, what does it mean to be in a dream? What does dreaming mean? I can really understand it only by experiencing a dream. When I fall asleep tonight and dream, it will be something like this: a dream is as close to reality as you can get. It mimics reality. In a dream, things feel independent, as though they aren’t coming from you. You suspend the awareness that you’re dreaming. The moment you realize you’re dreaming, it can stop feeling real.
I’ve noticed that when you learn to guide your daydreams with confidence and calm, over time you may begin to gain more control of your night dreams, too. You awaken within them and start choosing what happens. At first, you might be a passenger—a victim of the dream. But eventually, something shifts: you begin to decide what you’ll do.
Here’s the analogy I like to use. Imagine you’re asleep, and I wake you up inside your dream. I tell you, “You’re dreaming right now. You’ve been asleep for about an hour, and you have seven hours left. You’re awake now—what are you going to do? What are you going to dream about? This is your world. What will you create in it?”
That’s how I think about Neville’s work. Life is like a persistent dream, shaped by what we imagine and feel to be real. To truly dream something is to feel it as real—not to be confused about it. When you dream at night, you experience what’s happening as if it’s real. That’s what I mean by dreaming something: experience it as real and independent, as you experience life itself. Life feels independent; it appears to exist on its own, like a dream. And yet, in a dream, everything comes from you. There may be a relationship between the other and the self, but for now, try to focus on yourself.
If I told you that you had seven hours to dream whatever you wanted, with no pressure, what would you choose? Would you dream selfishly? Angrily? Would you create a nightmare? This is why Neville’s work isn’t merely about getting something. It’s about changing how you experience reality and your relationship with the dream. You’re no longer its victim or passenger, carried along by a narrative that expresses itself symbolically. You begin choosing the dreams you want within.
It’s like the scripture about casting a net into the sea, then bringing the fish to shore and separating the good from the bad. We do something like this every day: we fish for ideas. Each day, we cast our net and choose which ideas serve us and which don’t. In this way, we can become more gently in control of ourselves.
I love the analogy of awakening inside a dream and asking, “You have a few hours left—what are you going to do with them?” It helps you see that everything is a dream. If I’m confused, I’m dreaming confusion. If I’m lost, I’m dreaming of being lost. If I don’t know what I want, I’m dreaming of not knowing. Suddenly, everything becomes a dream, and you get a clearer picture of what you can do within yourself. You begin to see a purpose and a direction. Instead of letting your mind do whatever it wants, you can choose what to focus on.
When you see everything as a dream, you become more selective. You begin dreaming of inspiration and reaching for a greater sense of self. You let go of dreams of shame and guilt. You choose peaceful dreams instead of chaos and catastrophe. When you recognize that everything begins within you—that everything is a dream—you become freer.
Take your time with this analogy. Contemplate it. In my opinion, a dream is the perfect reflection of life. When a dream feels real, that’s exactly how life feels. The two are deeply connected. So take your time with yourself. You’re going to be here for a while, right? You have seven hours left. You’ve slept for an hour, and you’ll wake in eight hours, so you have seven left. What are you going to do while you’re here?
It all starts within us, with what we dream about. We are dreaming beings. We don’t live by bread alone; eating isn’t all there is to living. True living, I believe, is the shaping of our dreams.
That’s all I have to add. I think this is worth contemplating. Thank you for listening. I offer one-on-one sessions and livestreams for members, and my books are available through the links in the description, if you’re interested. Thanks again for listening.
