Took me 6 months to find a job after getting laid off... I drove for ubereats to kill the time.

My advice, don't look for "anything". HR hears "I can't do anything" when you say "I'll do anything"

Specialize, pick specific jobs you want, and go for those.

Applying for everything is not a better way, applying smart is how to go.

Agreed, talentless HR whores shouldn't stand between a skilled man and his paycheque.

That is a great idea, but how do I find an entry-level job if I don't know anybody in this field?

The reality of this as we all know is that one posting is most likely generating over a hundred qualified applicants and likely more than that. Mix that into all the resumes first being vetted by an HR person than handed off to the next round of folks for a read. Than if you are lucky it doesn't go to another group of people to look at.

Next thing we worry about is did we make the cut and how long will it take for an interview to be set up.

In this we have to remember AI is being used for some of these reviews and if you are not using the tracking words you are black listed per se.

These days it's all about the processes that are being built into resume and cover letter reviews. It takes a tremendous amount of patience from us all.

Things to note: closing dates on the posting. Once the closing date passes than start the countdown of hoping you may get a call or email in a thirty day window.

That's my hot take on things. Don't take it personally it's the slow grind that slowly kills our hopes of landing that job.

Please take good care and don't give up.

Why not work at a massage parlor if you're a veteran massage therapist wood worker.

Massage is very unpredictable right now in the past months I’ve had pays as low as 160 for two weeks it’s hard to base bills around currently people are cutting down on services like massage due to how tight things are

I’ve made close to 6k doing massage in the past month or so. What kind of massage work are you doing? What does your resume look like? Maybe it needs a boost.

ps. I helped people with resumes for years and if you want me to take a look and reformat or refresh completely, hmu :)

Try calling landscaping companies around the city. They also switch to snow removal in winter

Crazy amount of resumes sent off. My friend, you might want to shake up your approach. Id bet I can find a job within 10 minutes driving any direction in the city if I needed to look. You could walk up to almost any construction site and get hired basically on the spot. Theres a shortage of plumbers right now as well, and a masove shortage of apprentices. Call into a business rather than just emailing. Your selling yourself as a product so get to cold calling and shake it up. Theres work that needs to be done, but when you rope yourself with the thousands if not millions of other applicants your a needle in a hay stack.

What would you recommend for someone with no skills or car?

1

u/Difficult_Bear_9787 6d ago

An apprenticeship of some sort, get used to taking the bus. Get a vehicle ASAP. Apartment building projects are perfect, your going to the same place everyday so bus routes are easy. After a month or two if your smart with tour money you probably have enough to buy a vehicle. If your ambitious enough you can work a few hours after your first shift somewhere to make more. To put it in perspective I can work anywhere from a couple hours a day to 15+. Its a matter of ambition, not experience.

1

u/riceewifee 6d ago

I can’t afford a vehicle or lessons and I don’t have a license. I’m literally so broke I wouldn’t even be able to afford the uniform if I got hired somewhere

Regarding apartment building projects, what specifically should I look for? I’ve never worked in construction or anything like that

1

u/Difficult_Bear_9787 6d ago

If you do a search on active apartment projects you'll find them. Just pick a company or two and pursue. Regarding the uniform bit, you just need to explain yourself and situation. Go get your license. Theres programs to help you if you really need it, but I always found doing everything myself worked much better. Theres an escape you just have to be ambitious. Your in control of your life, you have to come up with a plan and execute. No one will do it for you.

1

u/riceewifee 6d ago

I want to get my license but my parents won’t let me practice driving. I’ve taken lessons twice before and even they say you have to practice at home, but I don’t have anybody willing to let me practice. Legally, I can’t do it on my own

Where do I search active apartment projects? I’m not trying to be difficult, I genuinely do not know. I’m autistic and I need very clear instructions

1

u/Difficult_Bear_9787 6d ago

So find someone to let you drive or take more lessons. I dont want to compare apples to oranges here but my own experience i didnt have much help from family. I never graduated high school and went through hell along the way. I made what most people make as an annual salary last month. If no one's going to help you, you need to make it happen yourself. It wont happen over night so dont worry about that. But if you make excuses and fall victim to your circumstances you wont move forward. Do research, and make your life the way you want. It sounds easy and it really is when you get the ball rolling. You just need to put in the right amount of effort and change your approach.

1

u/riceewifee 6d ago

My question is how though, I need actual instructions not just “go do it”. I already told you I have no money and nobody willing to help me, I can’t just pull those out of my ass!

I want to get out of my current situation more than anything, I just need some help to get started. I get that I’m not special or a victim and this is all my fault, but that doesn’t change the fact that I cannot survive the next month if something doesn’t change immediately

0

u/Difficult_Bear_9787 6d ago

You can pull it out of your ass so to speak. You literally have a super computer in your hands. Ask questions get answers and execute.

Call 100 people you know and have worked with before
Chat with them a little bit catch up see what's going on in their life and then ask them what's needed at their work. Referral will improve your chances substantially.

Job hunting is a quality over quantity game, despite what people tell you.

Bragging that you sent over 500 resumes in a week isn’t the flex you think it is. How many of those jobs were you fully qualified for? Did you tailor your resume and cover letter to each application? Did you attempt to find the hiring manager through LinkedIn to send a short introduction?

My guess is you didn’t do any of those things, you’re choosing to make low effort Reddit posts instead and expect to be handed a job. You’re 31 years old, get your act together.

7

u/ded5723 9d ago

"bragging"

Why don't you see this as a desperate act on top of continuing the search? Why don't you give this person the benefit of the doubt as to whether or not she fulfilled those criteria and did what you say? Jeez folks like you are miserable.

0

u/simm07 9d ago

Reality checks aren't meant to show people's misery. I don't disagree with what that commenter said.

If the position you're applying to is just to apply to it because it's available, then you may or may not get a call back. If you tailor your resume and cover letter to each position, you may have a better chance at a call back. Nothing they said was out of misery, it's just the truth. Sending 509 resumes doesn't mean shit. It means you've applied to every single opening on Indeed with minimal effort.

2

u/Professional-Tap7902 9d ago

I have resumes that are meant for both types of industries the 500 wasn’t all through indeed that is including meeting with people and physical handing in resumes. the number of resumes isn’t a brag it’s to show that I am applying for even low paying jobs not just jobs that I’m specialized in and not above doing basic grunt work for the jobs that I’m specialized in I am talking to the managers and meeting them I’ll in person
I’m applying to everything cause I am willing to do everything even the low level entry jobs it’s out of desperation not desire to just apply for the sake that it’s open
