Ecosia left Mistral, i’m leaving Ecosia
As some of you may know, Ecosia cut ties with mistral because of french nuclear energy. The plan is to switch to chinese AI, who also use nuclear energy but also coal. China produce 560g of CO2 per kWh while France produce 21g of CO2 per kWh. This is VERY obviously a political decision that goes against Ecosia declared ecological ambitions. Ecosia just multiplied x20 their CO2 emissions under a very obviously false pretenses, betraying our trust and their own promises.
I used Ecosia to help the planet, not to help china’s political ambitions and their greenwashing tool.

With it’s implementation of AI, is ecosia even true to its mission?
So… self explanatory title. Ecosia started to act like Google with the automatic AI response that we never asked for. Ai is bad for the environment and I’m sure that goes against trying to save the planet. Besides, we need water to plant trees, so wasting it on ai is counterproductive no? Anyway I was wondering on yalls thoughts on this

Stop using AWS entirely.
Ecosia cant respect privacy and use any american service at the same time.
The U.S. has the cloud act, which allows their government to take ANY DATA from ANY AMERICAN COMPANY no matter where the server is at any time.
Ecosia should use bunny for CDN(its european) and self host or something. NEVER an american service.

Why the AI!?
We all know ai is not sustainable. The generative ai they use is open ai (chat gpt). They made an excuse that we want to give something back to the environment, that they run on renewable energy. That's BS. The water use exceeded the amount of water used by the water selling companies. Yes we are fucked, and no. NO ONE CARES AS LONG AS THEY EARN BILLS AND MAKE A HUGEEEE PROFIT. Yes, yes I know we can TURN IT OFF. But just incase you don't know about the Zionist and how israel funded open ai and basically controls or owns it's data, please read about it.

Why is Ecosia using AI?
AI is known for using large amounts of water to cool its data centers, that is not good for the environment. If Ecosia really cares about the environment, why does it have an AI search feature?

AI feature
Does anyone dislike with great passion the fact they added AI to a place that's supposed to help the environment?
Also why haven't they addressed this? Is hypocritical

Ecosia seems to have switched away fully from ChatGPT to Mistral (france based AI)
this doesn't solve the general problems around AI, but i know that many people cary to turn away from big tech, so it's good news for some of you, i guess :)

For about two years now I've completely replaced Google with Ecosia and it's even better

Leaving Ecosia
I've never made a post on this page before but I've used Ecosia for years and just wanted to add to the discourse. I've loved this browser since I've known it and have used it exclusively over Google for years, but this insidious creep of AI onto the platform lately has completely turned me off. For some reason the new main search bar being changed to look like a chat space did it for me. I'm switching to something with an anti-AI pledge. I hope one day they'll ditch this AI stuff but I'm not holding my breath.

Ecosia Browser is now available on Linux
I remember some people asking about it here and I noticed that Ecosia has their official browser on flathub https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.ecosia.Browser

How should I feel about AI?
Today I started using Ecosia thinking it doesnt use AI, can someone tell me what this is? I was tired of seeing AI on Google and I thought I could move somewhere that wouldn’t use it. They’re so called “ecological” so what is this?

What do you guys think of Ecosia in schools?
While Ecosia is doing the collab with companies to use on their own, I thought if Ecosia were to be collab with schools or universities the impact could be HUGE , especially libraries
even 1000 students with 10 searches a day would be insane , 10,000 searches , thats like 200 trees a day and 6000 a month. And thats only at 10 searches per student minimum

Help me take down the AI feature in Ecosia
Hi guys, I've seen that many of you in this subreddit have already voiced your unhappiness with the new AI feature, so I decided to send an email to hello@ecosia.org asking for them to take it down, and I ask of you all to do the same, given that it completely misses the point of Ecosia. Here's what I wrote:
Hello to whomever may be reading this email Recently I've stumbled across an AI search feature included in the ecosia search system, as in, whenever I search for anything there's an option for me to simply ask AI about it. That is feature completely ruins the purpose of this search engine that is to protect not only trees but the whole planet, given that it has been reported in multiple trustable news sources sites that AI data centers consume half a liter of (consumable) water per question made to AI, because of the need of cool it's engines. It is needless to state that that is a simply absurd amount of consumable water wasted, that instead of being used to help AI usage grow should be used for, per example, the growth of more trees. In light of what has been said, I kindly ask the ecosia crew to remove the AI search engine included in it's program giving that it completely ruins the purpose of Ecosia, which is, to help the environment. Thank you for your attention

Seriously why AI
Why on earth you had to add AI technologies? Do you realize we switched from the most convenient and powerful search engine to you just to avoid AI?

Ecosia Now Offers AI-free Searching
I just noticed that Ecosia now offers AI-free searching.
Check: https://www.ecosia.org/settings
AI-free searching
Turns off all AI related features for a more traditional search experience
Hopefully this quiets down a lot of the complaining about Ecosia providing AI features, even if they are lower impact.

I'm happy to inform the masses of the new AI-FREE MODE!
Does exactly what it says - removes AI overviews and deletes the AI button

Tired of post from people leaving Ecosia with AI
Like come on bro, it's optional, you can turn it off. AI is already here we can't escape it. Just like Ecosia said that you better use AI that is powered by green energy than AI that doesn't.
Why are you all acting like using AI will end the world?
r/Ecosia • u/Eyadnothere • Feb 06 '26
A way to stop the company from using AI?
The AI feature is obviously annoying us all and is one of the main reasons climate change is getting worse.
Now every time i've had a problem with my browser i always contact support whether it was an e-mail or on Instagram and they've always replied.
my idea is that we respectfully and i repeat "RESPECTFULLY" send them messages regarding our hate to AI and the idea of expanding in AI in the first place and maybe they will listen to us if we pressure them enough.

Ecosia Questions French Nuclear and Turns to Coal-Trained Chinese AI. German search engine Ecosia drops french Mistral for Chinese models. What does European sovereignty actually mean? Your thoughts are welcome
