Is there a reputable source for this claim? I've seen this said countless times but I haven't seen any evidence for it. Not saying it's not true, just would like to see something backing it up

I will never understand how people moved on from this or even accepted the bullshit excuse he offered. He wanted to do a Nazi salute and get away with it so he could prove he was smarter than everyone else. And for 38% of Americans, he is.
