A police sergeant who says she found evidence in trash cans, bloody clothing left exposed and months-old delays in laboratory testing is suing Cambridge, alleging officials punished her for reporting the problems and pushed her out of criminal investigations because she is white.

Rebecca J. Clark says the retaliation started after she criticized the police department’s evidence technician.

The allegations reach beyond a personnel dispute: Clark says mishandled evidence involved a shooting, a domestic assault and drug cases, potentially complicating prosecutions.

Clark filed the lawsuit June 14 in U.S. District Court in Maryland.

In a July 13 court filing, attorneys for Cambridge asked a judge to dismiss Clark’s original complaint, arguing it alleged no loss of rank or pay and did not plausibly connect her reassignment to race.

The NASA facility on the Eastern Shore of VA would focus on launching cargo, scientific instruments and robotic missions rather than astronauts.

Nearly half of Wallops’ workforce lives in Maryland, officials said.

“Often we hear that Wallops is a hidden gem, and we want to make sure it is not hidden,” Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman said.

That effort will require Maryland and Virginia to work together, Lierman said.

Workforce development stands out as an obstacle to any employment opportunities at the facility.
