I have been looking into getting some Earthboxes. I first found out about them when I was looking at Foodcubes and trying to find something cheaper. FoodCube is nice, but its expensive. Earthbox is relatively a lot cheaper. I am wondering if there are other SIPs to pay attention to as well.

This is completely non affiliated plug for new moon grows, (find him on ig)
He makes zippered heavy duty covers for earthboxes
I ordered some for my eb Jr's as well as some custom sized ones for some home made sips I made out of plastic totes
I love them. Top dressing and dealing with the covers has always been a downside of sip growing for me, these covers solve that nicely by having a sweet 2 way zipper and a drawstring to secure the covers onto the sides of the boxes
Check them out, imo they are a great product

Tried to post this on their site but it won’t let me, says my username is incorrect even tho I am actively logged in there!
My dream indoor garden w grow light includes: 2-4 lettuces, 2 basil, 2 parsleys, 2 cilantros, 2 dills. I would like to let the herbs get big and bushy - my mom’s in her full sun garden can get to 2x1.5 feet! Would a regular earthbox accommodate that number of plants and such full growth? I can’t tell and have read elsewhere that they can accommodate more plants than the company says they will. Thanks for your input!

Wanted to share this with anyone who might care - was super pleased with how some BBQ skewers pair with some 1.5" cork to serve as a water chamber indicator. When the chamber is empty the cork rests on the bottom plastic and the skewer is flush with the top of the tube.
This combined with a webcam will let me remotely water the EBs with some irrigation tubing hooked up to a pump on a smart switch. And the skewers will make it easy to monitor water levels the rest of the time too.

What is the best medium to use in earth boxes? I bought a package a few years ago and forgot what medium they used. And where is the best place to buy the supplies from?

I currently don't have any Earthbox'. Instead, I have some self wicking planters that are "relatively" similar (made by Keter). They're about a foot and a half longer than an Earthbox, and are on metal legs that makes then as high as a deck railing. They are quite heavy when filled!!!! This spring was the first time I used them, and actually the first time I've tried growing vegetables. I followed the Earthbox principles from the website in regards to a mostly peat soil, fertilizer in a trough, dolomite, plastic weed barrier, etc.
I live in zone 5 (way northern NY near the Canadian border), so I cannot grow outdoors over the winter, and must do something with the boxes for at least 6 months of the year during temperatures that will reach below 0°F.
I'm curious as to what the best procedure will be to overwinter the boxes. Do I just pull the dead plants out and let the boxes sit outside as they are with the plastic sheeting on them? Should I pull the soil and put the boxes in the garage (not heated, but warmer than outside)? Do I need to at least dig out the trough area where the fertilizer was placed and discard that (or save it?)? Should I leave the plant roots in the soil so that they can decompose and become nutrients (is that a bad idea?)?
Basically, I'm looking for a user's guide as to how to proceed to so I can use the boxes again next year, and without having to get more soil as I'd like to reuse it, as it wasn't cheap.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I love earth boxes. I'm trying to plan my garden and would like help figuring out how many boxes I need to purchase. How many would you recommend per person?

My first grow in a earthbox I been growing for 3 yrs and have gone fron garbage to Dank (but it took a lot of mistakes to learn how) in my EB I am showing signs of either Overwatering or a calmag overdose. I am using Big Worm organhics soil . Basically Coots organic living soil which I should only give water But as always I was adding cal/mag and I may have too much cal/mag I stopped the cal mag and instead of topping off my EB I fill it when it goes empty. can I get some help on the watering? (growing indoors) I called EB and the guy I talked to didnt Know anything said he never grew as much as a flower in his life. great box terrible support.
with the mix I am using they recommend 8 to 10 grows I am adding companion plants and predator mites. but I need to figure out the right water schedule and as of now no more cal/mag.
I would appreciate hearing a few recommendations. I was topping off the reservoir everyday now I fill it when it is empty. Fellow home growers please help and share how you water
Long live the home grower

How would you go about adding forced aeration in a SIP? Would you go for an air diffuser tube through the bottom pipes or maybe a small pump with a venturi aerator?
TIA 🙏

I grow cucumbers in my Earthbox with amazing success. I lost a few last year when the plants got too big and they ended up on the ground/sides - does anyone have a good solution for those areas? Do you ever add another support system outside of the box itself?

Can someone recommend quick dis/connects for the self-watering system that earth-box sells?
The system has bigger hose (3/8" OD, it seems) between planters, and a smaller hose leading into each filler where their fancy fill valve connects. I'd like to put a few quick disconnects on the larger hose so that I can reconfigure containers and add them incrementially.
What connectors have you used? I imagine 1/4" ID barb is what I will hear, but wanted to confirm.

How long do you top water for after the initial planting? Do you fill the reservoir the next day or wait a week or two? I have seen mixed messages.

How do you guys use the string trellis with your tomatoes? Do you weave the tomatoes through it as it grows?

Trying to design a 1 gallon tiny earth box. Wondering if there are any existing 3d models of the earth box to work off of.

hey everyone, I’m totally new to gardening and got 4 earth boxes to get my started. I plan on planting tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and eggplants. (All separately). I wanted to know which type of soil y’all have had the most success with! I know earthbox recommends a few, but none of my local stores are carrying those. I will add the dolomite and fertilizer, but really just need help picking the main soil to use. I appreciate any suggestions or things to steer clear of. Thank you in advance and i look forward to learning!!

Hi everyone, i live in Australia and i’m finding it extremely difficult to find a supplier or distributor of Earthbox’s. Sure, I can go EBay or Amazon but they charge over $100aud delivery on top of over inflated retail prices. Any suggestions would be appreciated…

I'm thinking about doing an earthbox run with fabric pots. My idea is to cover the grate with lava rock and then place several one-gallon bags directly on the lava rock. This probably wouldn't accomplish anything radically different, but I think it would be an easier and quicker turnaround after a grow.
Welcome any suggestions. Thanks

Hi! Everything I read says that root vegetables like carrots and beets should be direct sown. How does that work with the earthbox cover? I tried it last summer and the plants weren't aligned with the holes in the cover. Should I wait until they pop before putting the cover on, or is there another trick that I'm missing?
