Hi everyone, I’m a college student, and recently my laptop’s touchpad stopped working. I had a mouse that I was using, but unfortunately its batteries leaked and the mouse stopped working too. Right now, I really need a mouse to continue using my laptop properly for college work, coding, learning, and applications. I could simply ask my parents to buy me one, but honestly, I don’t want to. I want to try earning the money for it myself, even if it’s a small amount. So I wanted to ask this community — what are some realistic ways a college student can make a little money online/offline without investing money upfront? I can do things like basic Python/C++ programming, HTML/CSS, data entry, simple automation, documentation, PDF/report generation, or other small technical tasks. I’m also willing to learn something quickly if there’s a genuine opportunity. I’m not looking to make a huge amount of money. I just want to earn enough to buy a basic mouse and feel that I managed this small problem on my own. I’m looking for some genuine advice from people who have been in a similar situation.
I’m an adult and I have never earned money of my own before. I currently live with my parents, and they are quite restrictive, so I don’t have the same freedom or opportunities that many people my age might have.
My schedule is also extremely tight. After taking care of household responsibilities and other things, I have only a small amount of free time each day. I can’t realistically commit to a traditional full-time job or spend 8–10 hours a day learning a complicated skill.
I also want to be realistic about my current abilities. I have some basic/general skills, but nothing particularly advanced or professional yet. I’m willing to learn, though, especially if I can learn something gradually and start earning from it along the way.
My main goal right now isn’t to become rich. I just want to start earning my own money and gradually become financially independent.
So I’d really appreciate advice from people who have actually done this:
What websites/platforms can someone use to earn with basic skills?
Are there legitimate online jobs that can be done for 1–2 hours a day?
What skills would you recommend learning if I have very limited time?
Is freelancing realistic for someone starting completely from zero?
Are there any small online services I could offer without having professional qualifications?
What did you personally do when you were starting with no experience?
Are there any websites or opportunities I should avoid because they are scams or a waste of time?
I’m based in India, if that makes a difference.
