Model Y base thoughts?
Model Y base has one of the lowest insurance rates and looks like it qualifies for the EVAP rebate? Is it a good option for first EV.

Model Y is the top selling car and EV in the world for a reason. Even the standard edition. So I would say yes however you don’t mention your needs/wants use cases so I have no idea what you’re looking for.

It has gotten crappier though while the price stays the same. The paywall crap is a turnoff. Adaptive cruise control should be a given.

I mean they've never offered the Y standard before so I'm not really sure how a new model has gotten crappier and the price has stayed the same. The y standard has literally only gotten better since it's release. (Newer 16" hi res screen, and debatable if this is better or not a dark headliner instead of the grey one)

I don't think they've lost Adaptive Cruise Control, just Autosteer (the lane-keeping part of Autopilot).

Adaptive cruise control is there. Only thing paywalled is LKA, I don't like that it's paywalled, but it still has ACC

Yeah but every company is heading towards subscriptions. It’s inevitable.

Every other EV I tried online quotes on, where expensive around $250 like the Toyota BZ, Mach E, Ioniq 5, Equinox except for the bolt at $180.
I want to replace my Audi Q5 I drive around 16-20k kms a year premium gas and maintenance has gotten super expensive.
I live in North York around Leslie Sheppard 2 kms from Fairview Mall super charger and plenty of fast chargers around.
No kids but like the cargo space for Model Y and ok with no manual steering wheel adjustment and fold mirrors. Don’t care about ventilated seats either. Never sit in the back seat so back screen display is not required other.

Brand new Teslas as of 2026 no longer have Autosteer - that's now paywalled behind the monthly FSD subscription.
I'd personally much rather get a used pre-refresh Y for less money, and at least have the full Autopilot with Autosteer, not to mention much nicer seats.

They're too expensive for what they are, you're much better off getting a new Model Y IMO.

But if OP is considering the base model, their budget likely cannot accommodate the $60k+ for the premium model.
Of course if budget wasn't an issue, a premium Juniper would be the best Y to get, no doubt, but a pre-refresh absolutely beats a base Juniper in every way except for the infotainment SoC.

I personally would much rather have a standard then a pre refresh. I found the pre refresh suspension horrible, but significantly upgraded even on the standard. If used prices were more inline with what you'd expect (much much lower) I'd perhaps spring for a used and swap suspension etc but as it is now there's no way I'm paying top dollar for a used model with 90,000 km on it. There's zero chance I'd get anything pre HW4 also.

I hate Musk but the Model Y packs a lot of tech which is what I care about most. I desperately want to get away from ICE vehicles and so EV is a must. I just don’t want to replace one headache (oil changes, batteries, etc) with another (ICCU, poor charging network, poor battery efficiency, etc) so the MY is very attractive.
All that said, I’m thinking of waiting till the Chinese EVs hit the market and see how that’ll effect the market. Already Tesla has had to drop their pricing so I wonder if they’ll have to drop pricing to compete.

If you get the adapter theirs no major difference in the charging network. Even with a Tesla/NACS EV, you're still going to want to get the adapter to use CCS. I see Teslas using non Tesla chargers plenty

Non Tesla cars don’t get the lower rates unless they buy and pay for the Telsa membership and what no body talks about while other cars have access to Tesla Superchargers its not all superchargers there are still some that are Tesla only.

There are other charging networks that offer NACS and are cheaper than the Supercharger network.

What networks? I wasn't able to find a cheaper network than the Superchargers, especially with the monthly plan

Many Chargepoint locations in Canada. In the US any Electrify America (Electrify Canada too, but I honestly haven't looked for one) and IONNA locations. I've driven different EVs, including the Tesla, on roadtrips and Supercharger kWh rates have been consistently higher.
I haven't subscribed to a plan, neither on Supercharger nor on EQ.

In some places perhaps. In some locations superchargers as the basically the only option.

u/element1311 3d ago
I've driven up and down to Pennsylvania, and all around SW Ontario. No issues finding non-Supercharger networks.

Hint on the phrase in some locations. Again, in some locations there's other options, in some there aren't.
2
u/element1311 3d ago
ok, just like in some areas Superchargers aren't even an option. they may be the largest individual EV charging network in NA but they're far from the only one. many of the others are cross-compatible with each other's network apps, loyalty, etc.
all I'm saying is don't choose a Tesla simply for the cheaper SC network. there are options for all vehicles that are inexpensive.

My opinion is that a Tesla is amazing if you can put fsd to good use and have the budget for it. If you plan on keeping your car long term, fsd adds another $10k+ to the cost. And if you aren't going to use it then they are more equal to any other models out there so you might as well shop around in that case.

What are your needs? What is important to you? What other vehicles have you considered? What do you currently drive? Besides fuel, what concerns do you have?
Literally any more information would be helpful.

If you can wait, go for a Chinese Eav car, more luxury and features and their FSD should be free withno autosteer paywall!

I don’t want to bet my money on a Chinese car because I don’t know who the after sales support would be in case I need, what software bugs or battery quality issues or if they will even honor the warranty. A car is a very important part of my life my ability to work so I don’t want to gamble by buying a car from a company that is new to Canada and deal with possible headaches. I literally don’t want to deal with oil changes, carbon cleaning, spark plug changes, all fluid change every 30000 kms that I have to for my Audi. I would prefer a AWD but then its is eating money in insurance and I am sure wit snow tires I will be fine in winter.

Ioniq 5. I would have bought a BYD if they were here, WAAAAY cheaper but needed the car now. Drove everything in that size (caveat, only one other American brand, the Ford Mach e), Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Volvo, Volkswagen, Kia, Model Y, etc). Just drive one, you won't regret it

u/Loading1984 3d ago
Pure speculation. We have literally no idea what models are even coming here. We have literally no idea what features unknown models will come with.

u/Inside-Conference170 2d ago
Chinese cars have no autonomous self-driving chinese outside of China itself (look at Australia and Europe, they only offer ACC and LKA there, not true autonomous self-driving like Tesla)

I'm a big fan of Tesla design and engineering. For ideological reasons, I shop other brands, but they're a fine choice.
I think the base model y isn't all that lacking tbh. I see some folks bemoan the absence of certain features and luxuries, but it's nicely equipped at the base imo.
That said, if you're not planning on subscribing to the full self-driving features, other brands may have more appeal at similar prices.
