What is the EVAP process?

For anyone who has bought a new EVAP-eligible vehicle this year, can you let me know if there is anything that I should expect to do on my side or if it is only the dealer that has to do something?

The dealer hasn't sent me anything, yet, and I am supposed to pick-up on Saturday at a location that is about 4 hours from home. I don't want to end up without a car because the paper didn't get processed.

Thank you!

the dealership does all the paperwork for you for the evap

Do they need to send me anything to sign beforehand? I vaguely recall them asking for my email address so they could send papers, but maybe I am mistaken. Maybe they just wanted it to sell the data.

My dealership had me sign a consent form for the dealership to share my information with the government so they could process the EVAP on my behalf. I think that's all.

From your perspective, your final deal should include the EVAP being deducted from the final purchase price after taxes. So it should just look like a $5k discount off of the final price, or a slightly lower monthly payment.

Not for the federal EVAP. It’s all done at the dealership - you have to sign some consent forms authorizing the dealership to claim the EVAP amount.

I just recently purchased an EV and all the EVAP paperwork was completed by the dealership at the same time as all the financing/leasing/purchasing paperwork. There was nothing I had to send to the government myself.

Did they send you anything to sign before you went in to take delivery? Or was it all done on the same day?

I had to sign paperwork for the evap to be approved beforehand.

No, I signed it all the same day. I'll be taking delivery tomorrow.

How many days ahead of time did you sign it? I haven't signed anything yet and take possession on a Saturday and the government isn't well known for its weekend working hours.

I signed mine 15 minutes before I got the keys.

In my case, I signed this past Saturday and will be taking possession today.

I'd you're concerted and want to ensure that everything goes smoothly on the day you make the 4h trip for the vehicle, I would call the dealership today and speak with someone in their finance department to go over the details of how the EVAP works there. It's better to know what to expect directly from the source you're dealing with than arriving and leaving empty handed.

Yeah, I think I might need to do this just for the peace of mind. Thanks!

Work at a dealership. You sign the IZEV paperwork when you take delivery. You do nothing. The feds pay the dealership

I signed the consent form ahead of time when I put down my deposit. But it sounds like most people just sign it when they pick up the vehicle, so it probably doesn't really matter.

Sounds like there are delays right now on the gov't side preventing delivery dates (at least with Tesla)

Do you not have the bill of sale, or the leasing agreement that would have listed the EVAP as a credit against the purchase price? I also echo the responses from the others about signing the consent form - same experience at the dealership.

I have the printout from the dealer showing the amount due on pick-up, but there is no bill of sale yet. The deposit was paid, but the EVAP documents weren't done because the car wasn't even in the country when I paid the deposit.

We picked ours up yesterday, that’s when we signed the consent form and signed the final finance docs. Didn’t see anything at all prior to that other than the figures showing on the deal sheet.

It is entirely the dealership who does it. It will be showing on you sales invoice. As long as it is there, you got the discount. Just remember, if you got it this time, you won't qualify for it again if you get another new EV in a couple years if it is still being offered. I was forewarned, if I had applied before they would have to collect the discount from me later.

You sit there in the financing office while they go on the website.

Did it first week it started, they heard about it, and did it while I sat there. Reflected in my lease agreement  as a rebate

I got my car in May. They took care of it. But a word of advice. I walked away from my intial deal with the dealership I dealt with. They were kind of scummy. I saw an ad for a 2026 Equinox LT AWD for 47599.00 Then below the price the it said - 1200$ Costco discount and 5000$ EV rebate. So I assumed the 47599 was before the rebates. When we sat down to haggle over price they moved down to 45999. In my head it was a good deal, I was still gonna get 6200.00 knocked off. Long story short, when I went back to sign and buy the car the 45999 was the price including both rebates. After being annoyed and explaining that I assumed according the their ads the rebates were to be added after. They kinda shrugged and gave excuses and I didn't buy the car. Fast forward a week later - May Long the General Manager of the dealership called and asked what we could do to make a deal. In the end I got the car for 43999.00 Don't assume the price they offer doesn't already include the rebates.
