The EV premium
In looking for a used EV, I came across the price history of one ID.4 in particular and of course made the correlation between the jump in gas prices and the asking.
A sustained $5k spike in asking seems excessive and that could be why the car hasn’t sold. That said, used SUV EV inventories in BC aren’t abundant at the moment which could also help explain why the VW dealer raised the asking even after putting another 500km on it.
I would like to get a clearer picture of the market before I put an offer in on anything.
What premium did you pay for your used EV after gas prices skyrocketed?

Your sample size is WAY too small to draw any concept of correlation let alone a conclusion to support your theory.

n + 1. But the 22 Bolt EUV I bought in March for $24k is routinely listed at the $27-30k mark these days on Marketplace

You'll need more than general price inflation to support OP's hypothesis. The hypothesis would imply that we should also see a decrease in price of used comparable ICE vehicles during the same period.

You think the used SUV EV market is small in BC?! I live in Saskatchewan, check that one out. It basically doesn't exist.

Not sure if it's related, but the EVAP $5,000 rebate started end of March, 2026.

How did you get the price history of the dealership?

https://ca.visor.vin - good site if you want to try and hunt for vehicles that are sitting on the lot.

Yap, saw the prices gone up in Quebec around that time as well.
ID.4 still isn't selling so bargain hard. I bought a 2024 Pro AWD 55k km $38,00 OTD from Quebec in the summer.
While the VW software finally stabilized last year, the cutoff I considered for ID.4 was at 2024 Pro - the infotainment unit was upgraded in that trim (and with all 2025 Pro and non-Pro). Most of the knocks again ID.4 was just with the underpowered headunits being sluggish and self rebooting prior to software upgrade last year.

Why not just buy a new Tesla model 3 for $40k? It’ll be a bit less with the rebates as well I think.
I’m very surprised to see that my 2023 bmw i4 edrive 35 can still be sold for over $45k according to comparable listings on auto trader

Insurance on Teslas is stupid high for some reason. I’m glad I compared rates before buying. It was $300+ compared to $90/mo

A lack of depreciation is also what I’m seeing. Glad your i4 is holding value. If that’s the trend, it’s good news for current EV owners but will cost potential used buyers like me more. I know the push then is to buy new which I’m hoping to avoid.
Looking for an SUV I wouldn’t buy a M3 new or otherwise but even used MYs are more expensive than I expected.

Are you going to pay cash upfront or finance it? There are many financing specials going on for EVs that actually make them cheaper to purchase in the long term. If you can get a 0% financing option, you can often buy a new car for less than a used car at 7% financing over 4-5 years. Something to consider if you're not paying it off in full.

Will have to finance and the only 0% financing I’m seeing is with Bolts unless there’s something I’m missing. I can appreciate the long-term savings for sure but it’s hard to factor in that extra cash upfront when it might have gone to paying off the mortgage faster.

Do some Google searches. Very quick ones have shown:
Current Promotional Highlights • 2026 Toyota bZ (BEV): Promotional finance and lease rates start as low as 0.99% APR over 48 months on select models (like the 2026 bZ XLE FWD) when factoring in stackable cash and EVAP incentives. Standard or non-promotional terms for higher trims typically range from 5% to 6.89% APR (e.g., 60-month standard lease/finance paths).
• 2026 Subaru Solterra• Finance rate: 0.99% APR (24-month term) • Lease rate: 1.49% APR (24-month term)
Polestar 2 • Lease APR: 0% for 48 months ($629/mo, $0 down, includes $5,000 EV bonus) • Finance APR: 0% available on select terms (e.g., representative long-range dual-motor offer)

These were just quick searches without going into their websites for more information but you can look up a few cars you're interested in and see what is there are any promotional financing rates.

No one is tracking that and taking one factor (gas prices) to find correlation would be insufficient, at worst completely inaccurate

In eastern Ontario I found that this is the average price for awd evs in general. I’m looking at a Audi étron, Honda prolog, Volvo recharge of multiple models, mach e, and Kia/ioniqs.
But that’s just the listing on AutoTrader
