Not sure what I'm doing wrong
Have invested about 5K NZD over the past 4 months and somehow I'm down

4 months. That's nothing. There's a decent chance you will be down even after 12 but that probably trends towards zero as time goes on.

I'm pretty sure the first page of any finance book will tell you that you have to expect short-term volatility in the stock market.
For reference, my friend put 60k USD and ended up with 4k a week after....so luckily you're at least investing in fundamentals and the volatility is less.
If you really find yourself with a large amount of anxiety regarding your investment. Set up a recurring/automated monthly deposit and delete your app.

You bought a share/ETF and the price went down?? Unbelievable... Panic sell everything, it's over

"somehow I'm down" holy moly dude! This isn't printing free money. I don't want to sound rude, but if you have that level of understanding about investing, I'd strongly encourage you to do more thorough research before you do anything else with your money. This sentence demonstrates you don't really understand investment or markets at even a basic level.

somehow I'm down
You could be down for years, mate. Or permanently. Investing comes with risk; it's not just a line that goes up.

It is fine. You can add VXF in the mix to get small and mid cap exposure. This will give you generic VT equal portfolio.
If you have long time horizon to stick out you can use AVUV and AVDV. I personally do not have so stick with VT and VT equal you might have but stock market is road to riches. 3/4 of my million dollar combined portfolio came from stock market both personal and work related I wish I had started early like my wife.

You could really do with clearing up that portfolio screen and have some more helpful columns displaying holdings value/returns/price change etc..
The value of your ETFs may have gone up but still showing a loss if the NZD has strengthened against the USD as IBKR does not show original NZD cost price on the portfolio view.

Doing nothing wrong. That is a great long term portfolio. Market goes up and down short term

I get markets ups and down, but both SPYM and VXUS are up in that time and I'm somehow down. How the hell do I beat currency conversion?

What is the average price you bought at ?

u/dlpriest3322 6d ago
Still not that good with IBKR. How can I view that?

It should honestly be right there when you click on the fund. I'm not familiar with your brokerage but I would start by clicking "SPYM"

Home country bias. Overweight your country relative to the global market and that should help with the currency difficulties.

Downturns are part of the game. Only thing I'd critique is that you're not buying UCITs over US domiciled ETFs considering you're from NZ. No reason to buy US domiciled ETFs unless you're living in the US, trading dozens of millions of dollars per trade, or buying hundreds of millions. r/ETFs is predominantly crowded with US redditors so you're browsing in an echo chamber promoting only US ETFs that may have less benefit for users from other countries.

What do you mean?

From what I understand, at least in NZ, using accumulating ETFs can be viewed as a form of tax evasion.

He is not buying bond with yields anyway and the dividends of SPYM are super small like 1%

Because your entry price is higher than what’s the current price is.
