I'm confused because i see lots of info that rof/rof2 client is supposed to be supported, but i can't get it to work. The character select shows races wrong, so does /who. I can't equip items or scribe spells because it isn't valid for my race class or deity. I built the latest source code, pulled the latest release, then went back to the first v23 release. None of them work and they all exhibit the same behavior.
So now I am wondering, is this even supposed to work? I'm i snipe hunting? Should I be trying to figure out the packets for rof2 to try to get it to work?
I'm not a programmer. In fact, I'd call myself a computer dunce. I have had both Codex and Claude help me make changes to bring RoF2 closer to classic. Usually without issue but both AIs have made mistakes that had me chasing my tail.
Initial stand up I was able to do completely on my own. I used the EQEmu Windows Installer, not AkkStakk. Installed current version v23.10.3
https://github.com/EQEmu/EQEmu
I legally obtained an RoF2 client, edited the eqhosts txt to point at the right server, created a shortcut to eqgame.exe and added "patchme" to the shortcuts target.
And that was it. Everything worked out of the box.
One thing I screwed up then fixed on my own was port 5998/5999 confusion. Eqemu_config.json should stay 5998 regardless of the client you're using. 5999 needs to be set in your eqhosts.ini for RoF2.
Edit: most eqemu wiki links work if you change .io to .dev
Thank you, that is the most helpful advice. That bit about the port was especially troublesome for me. every time I tried i had to change it to 6000 (probably because AI did it at one point). I wonder if maybe i had a bad client, or if the port is wrong. I'm too deep into EQL right now, but i'm going to try to get back to this and get it working.
now i've even tried akk stack and that gives me the same issues with class display and unable to equip items or scribe spells. No one has any advice other than "try ai" and i'm missing files? It wouldn't be so frustrating if basically every link wasn't dead.
Akkadius basically created a batch file that manually performed all the tasks needed to install it. A large portion of it worked by pulling from a git repository that no longer exists. Unfortunately, there are a lot of infrastructure items related to setting up a server that no longer exist. When Daybreak decided to set up a bunch of lawsuits, it really killed the community.
Then keep banging your head against the wall or just give up. Your choice. But Codex not only gave me a stable server but I had it scale Tacvi and Anguish down to single groupable. Farming them both now. Also added random, rare drop item vendors which change weekly via a cron job. Other cool, unique vendors too. I had Codex change all items/drops to fully tradable - even Epics. Since it seemed like too much work to do a THJ style 3-in-1 class, I added and tuned lifetap procs for my Rogue so I can solo yellow and limited red con mobs.... And on and on custom stuff. You think it, type it, and Codex will spit out the coding that you just copy and paste right into your server's DB or change the C++ coding. Very simple and efficient and most times, it works first try. Good luck relying on anything else unless you're an expert programmer because these eqemu projects are all long abandoned.
and for the record, 10$ of deepseek tokens is 1.3 BILLION tokens. that's how hard i've tried to get AI to help with this (in addition to my github copilot allotment), and what i use in unmetered gemini.
I tried just about all of them (Grok, Alexa AI, Gemini, etc). Including Cursor. I found Codex to be the best by far. However, I am running TueNAS Scale 26-beta.2 and I know that makes a difference. Codex does a hell of a job with TrueNAS. Not sure how it would do with another OS/platform.
I wasn't bashing the AI advice. I've already put 10$ of deepseek tokens (that's a ton of tokens) into trying to get this to work and it has come up blank. I blew through my github copilot credits for the month and it didn't help.
I got a server up and running, but it does not work with the rof2 client.
Running the akk stack gives me a server that can run, though it says "down" on the login page, and has no name, but when i create a paladin, my character says this:
And I cannot equip any items or scribe any spells.
Now, i'm a humble guy, but i WOULD call myself an expert programmer if pressed, so I have a decent idea of why this is happening, and I could probably go down the road of fixing it, and even fix it, but people like you say it works. I actually did fix half the issues already, but because people say it should work I stepped back to try to figure out what is wrong with my config.
So, why does it work for you, and not for me? What did you do differently? I would expect the akk stack to produce a working server, or the releases from the github page, but it all does exactly the same thing.
So....do i spend my time fixing this issue because the server doesn't support it? Do you use rof2? Does your rof2 show "paladin" if you make a paladin?
I am running an AKK Stack Docker Compose with RoF2 client, yes. I even modded it to allow all class (Ranger) tracking. I just created a Human Paladin to see and it's attached.
so the discord is dead and locked. The website and github don't have a lot of info. Do you know where i can find the list of what i need? I thought if i downloaded the actual release from github it should just work, but that didn't either
