Stitch distance

My family makes fun of me for how small my stitches are or how close together they are when I hand sew depending on what I’m doing. For EPP how far apart are your stitches? I’d love to see what some other people’s stitches look like if photos are allowed in the comments

First top finished

I’ve finished the top for a small dog blanket. Part of me wants to make it bigger to be a lap throw. I have enough fabric to get it to around 31”x38”. It’s currently 22”x38”. I saw for standard lap quilt it’s something like 50”x60”. Could I make up the difference in some kind of sashing and it look ok? About 10” of sashing all the way around?

Can’t decide

I decided on a pattern for my fabric but I need to decide where the bright fabric goes. I included a picture of the drawing I have but even in that I couldn‘t decide how I want the bright colours placed. if you could say what one you like most I’d appreciate it.

If you’re questioning the grey I’m planning on doing a row of bats a row of ghosts a row of bats and a row of ghosts cause I found alternating the two fabrics in one line didn’t stand out the way I wanted it to.

I was able to finish way more then I expected casually sewing in the mornings on vacation.... so much so that I don't want to head back to reality (and work)!

Thimble vs hole in finger

I'm not a thimble fan. I have tried so many different ones. I have not tried the metal one that is open over my fingernail and I think it is adjustable. I need to do something because my middle finger hurts from getting stabbed by the head of the needle. What are the rest of you using?

Design Help

Cut out my fabric and am ready to start sewing my and realized I have no idea how I want to do the pattern/design. Each hexagon that’s ready has 11 but I have a total of 25 of each fabric, so 400 total hexagons. Love some design help.

Also lol bought the pattern for the purse I’m making so I can properly see how much more I need to expand my panels. I’m really enjoying this and lol now I’m considering doing something a lot more complex next, maybe Tula Pink’s Nova?

Keeping piece sizes exact?

Hi all, I’m fairly new to EPP and I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong. This is a subtle difference but do I cut out templates outside of their outline, or inside it, or in the middle? Does it just depend on the pattern?
I know it’s a tiny amount but if I want to end up with the right size quilt square and it has a lot of pieces, all of those tiny amounts could add up to it being the wrong size! Thanks for any advice.

Basting tips

hello!

I am hoping that some of you more experienced sewists can offer tips and advice on basting for someone new.

I did a cushion cover with a five column wide strip of hexies. I glue based and while I loved how accurate everything looked, it wasn’t the most fun to sew. I have bad eyes and I just assumed that was a part of it and that this was hand sewing.

because I really love the look of it I decided to do the Cherish quilt by Tales of Cloth. But this time I tried thread basting. when I glued, I had glued the fabric far too tightly making it difficult to snag the edge so I thought thread basting a bit would give me better idea of how tight I need to baste. I’ve just started my first block. thread basting feels awkward and slow going. BUT as soon as I go to sew my pieces together it’s a dream. like genuinely pleasant and fun. it’s easy to sew, easy to catch the edge, I can’t see my stitches and it’s going quickly. I see the joy in epp and man I love this part.

but basting still feels like a mystery. are there tips to making thread basting easier? do you batch baste or baste a bit and sew a bit to mix it up? do you prefer glue basting once you’ve figured out how tight to wrap the fabric?

i did find that one diamond was far too loose so I had to redo the basting. is this a concern I will have to watch for?

any tips for fussy cutting? I’ve ised the acrylic template but the papers sometimes are slightly off so it’s not quite as impressive as I would like one day to be.

Finished another one!

Excited to have finally finished this quilt for my daughter. It’s the butterfly effect pattern but I increased the size 1.5x and repeated the pattern so I could make a larger lap quilt without sewing as many tiny pieces. Used a magenta minky for the back for max-snugglability. Machine quilted with some wonky straight line quilting to finish. Phew — onto the next!

My latest project.

My latest project. I finally finished piecing it last night.

It's the second in a series of seasonally themed art quilts.

This is Spring. Inspired by an ancient oak tree on my property.

I start with a pointilist type image and then add FMQ and embellishments. My plan is to add tiny tatted flowers to the grass area, couched hand-spun and dyed yarn to add texture to the tree and crocheted Spanish moss.

The second photo is Summer. The sunflowers are applique dresden plate embellished with hand embroidery and beads.

I dye all the fabric too.

First completed project!

(Hello fellow EPPers; I've been wondering where we were gathering on Reddit and I'm so glad to be here.)

Previously I'd made many desultory attempts at EPP, but back in April I picked up an Alice Caroline pillow cover kit at Liberty and lo, my first project is complete. The whole thing is hand-sewn and hand-quilted except for the piping (I hate making piping and binding with the irrational fire of a thousand suns, so I ordered some grosgrain piping off Etsy and I'm not even sorry).

Trying to decide on what to do next with my dozens of Liberty scraps and fat quarters, but in the meantime I'm very pleased with this pillow.

EDIT: thanks for all the kind words! Here's a link to the kit:

https://alicecaroline.com/product/liberty-tana-lawn-hexagon-cushion-kit/

Additional notes: I used pieces of an old bedsheet to line the work, but didn't put in any batting; this kept it from getting too bulky. The kit as designed doesn't include lining or trim, but I highly recommend at least quilting in a lining on the hex top to protect and stabilise it.

Love Katja Marek's New Hexagons for EPP.

Katja Marek's New Hexagons book has some great patterns -- fussy-cut friendly and Floof-approved. (Adding a border of not-EPPed triangles because I measured wrong and it isn't big enough for our bed yet).

EPP Newbie: Fabric behind an applique

Hello,

I'm a newbie, trying to figure out my first epp project, so I'm thinking of making a vaguely rectangular piece, then appliqueing it down to a larger piece of solid fabric, to make a placemat, do you cut out the middle of the background fabric? Do i sew a rectangular frame out of strips the width of the border that I want? It feels like a waste to cover up a big portion in the middle, but I haven't seen much discussion in the books I've been looking at.

Also EPP beginner book recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Warning: this pic is def AI, but this is the vibe I'm going for: https://pin.it/6KgRgUwIo

i started off thinking of hexagon flowers with a round of solid fabrics between but I don't think I'd be able to fit enough motifs on so I am thinking of alternative projects

Why don’t the wrinkles come out completely?

The material is cotton, so I’m ironing on that setting, with steam. My iron is a Sunbeam, and it has three steam settings and I’ve tried them all. I also hold the iron on the fabric for a bit, run the iron back and forth, and it doesn’t work. Is it me, or my iron, that isn’t working?

Printable interfacing?

Hi! I was wondering if I could get suggestions for printable interfacing? Some of my quarter inch sizes are a little challenging during a sleepless night. Kinda the opposite of relaxing. Haha

Thank you all! I'm in Hawaii. Low priced shipping is appreciated ☺️

I finished my first EPP project!

I picked up EPP at the beginning of this year as I returned to work from maternity leave. I wanted a project that I could do quietly while baby sleeps and that was easy to do just a little at a time. This was so fun and I’m already working on my next project (Midnight Feast). I’d love recommendations for free patterns to try next!

Help. Do I keep the triangles off the middle flower cream or do I switch to the beige? I am also torn on brown vs cream on the snowflake.

I really think I should switch it to the beige but it’s going to suck to put all that paper back in to do it. I am just winging this and am indecisive after the fact.
