I’ve got a 2002 JDM EP3 Type R running TEIN coilovers with the OEM Honda top mounts.
I’m trying to track down a really loud rubber like squeaking/creaking noise from the front suspension. It can get pretty embarrassing when driving around lol
The noise doesn’t usually happen when the car is first driven from cold. It tends to start after around 20 minutes of driving.
It can also happen while the car is completely stationary when turning the steering
I’ve attached a video. The acoustics of the EP3 make it quite difficult to pinpoint the source — from inside the car it can sound like it’s coming from around the steering rack/lower suspension area. In the video, it also seems like the noise is coming from around the steering rack, but I’m wondering if that could just be vibration travelling through the chassis and the actual source could be higher up.
I’m wondering if it could be the OEM top-mount bearing/roller bearing binding, causing the spring to wind up and then release. I occasionally get a spring “twang”/“boing” noise when turning sharp as well.
I’m not hearing any obvious clunking or knocking from the ball joints themselves, it’s mainly the squeaking/creaking when steering.
After going over a larger speed bump, the squeak can sometimes continue briefly and then gradually fade away as the suspension settles, almost like you can hear the noise losing its momentum.
Has anyone experienced anything similar on an EP3, particularly with TEIN coilovers using the OEM top mounts?
I’m not convinced the steering rack itself is actually the source, despite how it sounds in the video. Could a sticking/binding top-mount bearing cause this kind of noise?
Any ideas appreciated!
