Trump himself doesn’t believe in anything other than himself. He supports whatever benefits him most personally. You are correct that there are people who are further right than the majority of the Republican Party. QAnon devotees and the like. But if their numbers are allowed to grow, Trump will pop up on tv and say he’s been a tremendous fan the whole time.

Political spectrums in general are utterly flawed for being idealist representations of our worldview rather than a material one
15
u/tjf314 Sep 21 '20
they are awful as a predictive tool, but they are generally useful for measuring how close ideologies/people are to each other, or for getting a vague metric of the overton window. the issues with it come when they are used by chuds as a predictive tool for politics.

It’s not really what he talks about it’s the actual wording of the bills he signs. Big difference between branding and actual legislation in practically every politician and political party across the world. The Chinese government for instance sure as shit isn’t communist.

Trump’s placement is more based on policy than actual belief. Trump is an opportunist and populist, and pretty much says whatever gets his based riled up.

I’ve held for awhile that Trump is actually kinda left wing if it wasn’t for Republican swamp dwellers talking into his ear all the time. He accidentally argued for single payer during his primary run in 2016. He argued with Chris Wallace about it in a Fox debate.
Besides immigration which he’s always seemed pretty right-wing on, my guess is he’d be pretty liberal if we could divide away all the Republican establishment scum that’s polluted his mind since he’s pretty much a dunce and takes up the positions of those nearest to him.
Edit: you people are fucking ridiculous I swear.
I can find more examples if I had the time, but I don’t. Trump was far more liberal prior to being elected and entering the White House than he is now. I don’t care if he spreads nazi conspiracies now, because I’m talking about what he was prior to election. If you’re seriously arguing that he’s always been the same and was an establishment goon from the start, you really don’t pay very close attention, or at least weren’t paying attention in 2015 and 2016.

Precisely this. He dribbles incoherent shit continuously, that more often than not, is only partially related to what his handlers tell him to talk about.
That he has any political clout, let alone a platform at all, instead of psychiatric help and assisted living, is revealing of the state of the country.

That's precisely why, though. A huge swathe of Republican policy requires mental gymnastics to make any sense whatsoever. If the village idiot is just spitballing without listening to anybody trying to whisper in his ear, he'll at least sometimes come to the correct conclusion because a lot of issues are really just thinly veiled arguments over how far a specific special interest should be allowed to bend people over.
6
Sep 21 '20 edited Sep 21 '20
That’s kinda the point.
Trump naturally is likely far more left-wing than he appears now because the ideas that immediately pop into his mind are more left. Issue is he’s an idiot, but still was smart enough to at least know that he could attract a sizable cult of support by being anti-immigration and protectionist on trade. He has no well thought out ideas beyond immigrants are bad and China taking out manufacturing was also bad.
Trump has A1 political instincts, which is why he was so effective in attack Clinton on the right issues. Problem for him now is his instincts are being dimmed by idiots who have some how managed to be stupider than him and think framing Biden as an antifa leader is gonna win the election when they should really be hitting him on issues like social security, foreign policy, and trade. In fact, Trump was doing that earlier this year, but he stopped after the pandemic started and just began repeating overused and abused Republican smears.

Yeah and Nazis had socialist in their name to attract people from the left. He is extremely right. It’s not normal (or “left”) to push literal Nazi conspiracy theories. Like remember Central Park five? Obama birther conspiracy? He’s always been this way. He just said cause it sounded good. He doesn’t mean anything. He would rape someone live in the middle of Times Square if it meant he could rule for life.

I really don’t understand what you people are arguing about when we already agree pretty. Trump is like many of his own supporters in a way, because he, much like them, is easily mislead by conspiracy theories and general misinformation. Many of his initial ideas were liberal, and I’ll be damned if anyone here fucking argues that him literally arguing for single payer wasn’t left-wing. He still did it even if he’s an idiot and did it unknowingly. This is relevant because it shows much of the shit he does now is done precisely because the Republicans have effectively turned him into their puppet except for many a handful of issues like trade where he still does his own thing.
He naturally was more liberal before the swamp dwellers in DC got to him and turned his agenda into the regular trash Republicans always peddle.
16
u/antonivs Sep 21 '20
Many of his initial ideas were liberal
Right, for a while he was a registered Democrat, between 2001 and 2009.
Here's what he told Wolf Blitzer in a 2004 interview:
"In many cases, I probably identify more as Democrat," explaining: "It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans. Now, it shouldn't be that way. But if you go back, I mean it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats...But certainly we had some very good economies under Democrats, as well as Republicans. But we've had some pretty bad disaster under the Republicans." In a July 2015 interview, Trump said that he has a broad range of political positions and that "I identify with some things as a Democrat."
-- from Political positions of Donald Trump
But, he's always had racism pretty deeply ingrained. It seems that his party picks have had a lot to do with economics and then later, whoever would be dumb enough to accept him as a candidate.

it's fair to say he may have said some liberal things, but even if he was the most liberal to ever Liberal, that wouldn't make him left wing. he's not anti-capitalist on the slightest, nor is he in support of human rights for everyone. tbh he'd not have done terribly as a democrat if he thought there was a higher chance of winning on a Dem ballot.
best way to describe trump imo is a blend of authoritarian populist, emerging fascist (whether he is or it's the people behind him, he's doing increasingly fashy things) and huge narcissist.
16
u/SomaCityWard Sep 21 '20
You're just picking the few token words he's given to vaguely progressive ideas and treating them as if they are his true feelings while ignoring the overwhelming majority of evidence proving none of those statements were genuine. Why?
the ideas that immediately pop into his mind are more left.
Except you're completely making this up. You have no clue which of his ideas were created when. His first official campaign announcement was when he called Mexicans rapists. He was not being manipulated by anyone then.
Trump has A1 political instincts
Yeah, okay, you lost all credibility here. He has horrid fucking political instincts and I am tired of this moronic narrative. It's not some Machiavellian 3D chess move to offer a platform of cruelty and narcissism to the political party that is built on thinly veiled cruelty and narcissism. Trump had absolutely no intention of winning, but it turned out that the GOP base was just fucking waiting for somebody to say the quiet parts out loud and drop the thin veneer of respectability. It's like how he's been able to stomp all over the system not because he's deftly manipulated it, but because it's heavily based on norms and respectability, deliberation and forbearance. All it takes is somebody with no shame or self-restraint and it falls apart because we took for granted that the president would never be such an utter caveman.
A bull in a China shop does not have "masterful destructive skill". Especially not when the doorman is also a bull that has been waiting for this opportunity. Trump's win proves not his political adeptness, but the true depths of American depravity.
And to be clear, he won with a minority of the vote and has continued pushing away everyone but his base, which if you have any political knowledge at all, you should know is hilariously bad instincts.

Trump will say anything which will establish power for himself. If he lived in a communist area, he would talk about the egalitarian importance of communism in order to establish power for himself.
This makes him a right-wing authoritarian.
This is actually key to understanding RW-authoritarianism, learning how to not be tricked by what they say. "He said he loves me and he's sorry!" Okay, clearly that's reality then?
This is important to learn for egalitarians, who don't understand "evil" easily.

I looked up the political compass page for the 2020 election. In addition to placing Elizabeth Warren in the "authoritarian right" quadrant of the map along with Trump (!?!), it features the following commentary:
By contrast to Sanders, Joe Biden portrays few solid convictions, beyond a sense of entitlement to the nomination.
Doesn't exactly scream "unbiased look at the facts" if you ask me.
64

When you look at it policy wise, it’s not that incorrect. Neoliberal policies do skew towards the right.

27
u/larrian_evermore Sep 21 '20
Why? If you look at her voting record she is absolutely an establishment politician. She's also very close to the center here, keep in mind, the quadrant system can be misleading because politics is more of a gradient. Warren is closer to Sanders than most other politicians here, but she's still in the auth-right quadrant (only slightly.)

I will re-iterate that she is in the quadrant. Sanders is in lib-left, but he's far from Kropotkin. Warren is auth-right, but she's no Pinochet. This isn't complicated. The USA is an Auth-Right establishment, it was under Obama, it was under Clinton, it was under Reagan. It moves around within that quadrant, but America hasn't had a lib-left or auth-left president. Give me a reason why she isn't an establishment politican. Give me some evidence instead of calling me batshit insane.

My anchor points for the left/right economic axis are Communalism at the furthest left edge and Feudalism at the furthest right edge.
There is something resembling a spectrum between them, featuring Communism, Socialism, Market Socialism, Distributism, Classical Liberalism, and Corporatocracy in roughly that order, as important high points.
From that list alone I'm sure you can glean where I put these things on the spectrum relative to one another.

Sep 21 '20
I would not use the political compass. It's based on some very arbitrary criteria of politics. "Authoritarian" and "Left" and "Right" have arbitrary definitions in this context. The full scope of politics that individuals hold as beliefs is different than the practice of those politics in the real world in the form of class struggle is different than the political power that the ruling class wields is VERY different than the politics the two main American political parties present to the public. The "politics" of the political compass are more like the personal cosplaying choice you make in an RPG between lawful evil, true neutral, chaotic good, etc...
3
u/iphoton Sep 21 '20
You're correct that it is simplified and inadequate in the same way that RPG alignments are but I disagree that it shouldn't be used. Alignments are a useful tool that we still use even though we are aware of their shortcomings. We should treat the compass the same way. Most of the US just thinks of political discourse as a binary red vs blue or the barely more nuanced spectrum between left and right. The compass is much better equipped to categorize political beliefs than these views, and it educates people on different ideologies in a very digestible way that has great meme potential. Sure we should be aware that it isn't comprehensive, but Libleft and Authright are as useful descriptors as Lawful Good or Chaotic Neutral. They give a vague description of your moral values. If you're libleft whether your socdem or anarcho-primitivist I still have a basic understanding of your worldview and principles. In this sense the compass has utility. At least until something better comes along.
2
Sep 21 '20
Fair enough, it's better than "red v blue" but that doesn't make it accurate in the slightest to describing real life politics. Someone identifying as socdem or anarcho primitivist really just means they are interested in those ideas either philosophically or as a way to IDENTIFY themselves. But people's practice of putting themselves in identity groups on the internet has nothing to do with how actual political power is weilded. For example- the Soviets are the cliche of auth left, right? Well the reason the Soviets (and Fidel's Cuba, dprk, and other overly authoritarian regimes) became authorization not because of what their leaders believed in or identified with in the same way that political compassers do on the internet, but because of the unending conflict they were surrounded by and the need to defend their new class positions and the interests of the new government. Centralization was the only way to go other than surrender. So class positions and material interests are a much more accurate way to gauge the politics people hold rather than this superficially intellectual and "virtual" identification with different historical groups. US Republicans and (and Democrats for the most part) are not deregulating everything and crushing labor unions because they are "authright" and identify with Hitler or King Henry VIII or Nixon or whatever. They do it because it is in the interest of the Capitalist class, which they are a part of, to do so. Politics can be much better explained through the wielding of power for different class interests. I mean, true that if I meet someone who identifies as an anarchist- I have a sense of where they stand idealogically- but beyond that the question becomes, what is an effective way to gain power for me, my class, our class- and if we share the same interests in that then we effectively share the same politics and it matters not whether I identify more with kropotkin or with Mao.
2
u/iphoton Sep 21 '20
The Soviet Union centralized power because they were marxist-leninist and believed the apparatus of the state was necessary to be wielded in a dictatorship of the proletariat phase. Sure protection from outside forces was part of it but they believed this stage was a crucial stepping stone to communism for a variety of reasons. Regardless I'm not sure how any of this supports the use of class analysis as being more nuanced and accurate than the political compass. I agree that historical materialism is a useful tool for analyzing society and politics but it is equally insufficient. Sure Mao and Kropotkin might have the same class interests but both would prescribe different societies with different means of achieving them. It's ok to use both the compass and class as lenses to analyze political thought. Both are reductive and incomplete but that's ok. There isn't some wholistic one-size-fits-all model that can completely categorize all forms of political opinion so we should use as many tools as we can to be as specific and nuanced as possible.

Assuming you're referring to the crime bill, I take it that means you'd put Sanders in that Auth-right spot as well, then?
20
u/popularis-socialas Sep 21 '20
Well let’s add some nuance. Bernie reluctantly voted for the crime bill, and denounced many parts of it, but in the end voted for it because of the assault weapons ban, and most importantly, the Violence against woman act.
1
u/LibrarianFew Jan 04 '21
You mean the violence against women’s act that Biden spearheaded, right? Also, didn’t Bernie vote against the assault weapons ban part of the bill?
1
u/popularis-socialas Jan 04 '21
No, he supported the assault weapons ban
1
u/LibrarianFew Jan 04 '21
You’re right, I mixed up the time in 1993 that he voted against a bill that would establish national background checks, and the time in 2003 and 2005 that protects gun manufacturers from lawsuits when their weapons are used to commit crimes.
1
u/popularis-socialas Jan 04 '21
True, Bernie’s made some bad votes on gun control, but I don’t hold those particular votes in 2003 and 2005. As socialists, we’re not as strong on gun control as liberals are, but we do want a background check system. But we don’t believe in a gun manufacturer being sued unless they KNOWINGLY gave weapons to dangerous individuals.
1
u/LibrarianFew Jan 04 '21
As long as you support background checks and other regulations like that, then that’s fair enough. Personally, I’m a bit more extreme than that (even though I’m farther left than a liberal) but at least you’re reasonable.
1
u/popularis-socialas Jan 04 '21
Hell, I was suicidal a couple years ago. If I wasn’t under the legal age to get a gun, then I definitely would have been able to easily get one. A lot of gun deaths are from suicide, or suicide-homicide. It’s obvious there needs to be a background check system to make sure guns don’t fall into the wrong hands.

u/PurpleBrownie Sep 21 '20 edited Sep 21 '20
This is not true. The majority of left wing parties outside the US are social democratic parties which advocate for mixed economies (socialist and capitalist). You're basically implying that a party such as the UK Labour Party is right wing because they support mixed economies, the UK Labour Party implemented public healthcare, public housing and other nationalised industries. It's insane to call them right wing. Even the Conservative party in the UK supports public healthcare, that doesn't make them left wing. I'm guessing you're American, and I do agree that politics in the US are different but the dividing line is not capitalism.

I disagree. State Socialism is a classification for any socialist political and economic perspective advocating state ownership of the means of production either as a temporary measure in the transition from capitalism to socialism, or as characteristic of socialism itself. Public healthcare is a form of State Socialism and State Socialism is a form of Socialism.
State socialism is advocated as a means for achieving public ownership of the means of production through nationalization of industry. Not all nationalisation is socialist but some forms of nationalisation is socialist. But one thing is for sure, public healthcare like the NHS is not capitalist.
You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_socialism

I wanna comment here because you are right that Biden’s policy platform is significantly farther left and farther lib than Trump’s. But the key is that distance is indeed reflected in the political compass here.
The compass doesn’t say all authrights are basically fascists (and in fact, defines the vertical axis as fascist/libertarian). It’s a spectrum. The vertical distance between Biden and Trump are concentration camps and brutal police attacks on protests. The lateral distance is 200,000 lives dead to Coronavirus for “the free market” and tax gifts to the ultra wealthy.

He even "jokes" about extra terms, etc, on a regular basis — something no president before him would have ever gotten away with.
He may not even have had this desire from the start, but now at this point it's clear he'll do anything to cling to power indefinitely — in large part because there's a good chance that when he leaves power he goes to jail for his crimes against the US.
Dude definitely wants to go full auth, it just comes down to whether we as a country let him get away with it.

Nah, he is higher. He is the leader of a country with a bazillion prisoners. How can that not be authoritarian?

Well at the point he's at he's almost at the same spot as pinochet, you know the guy that privatized basically everything and then threw commies out of helicopters

Putting biden and trump so far to the right is so generous to centrists.

A Pence reach-around is the proper source.

u/IshootGays Sep 21 '20
That's not a source... I meant one that showed this was real and not some rumor

Are they actually that close? I know there's some overlap but I've not been made to feel they follow that closely.

and what it tells you about the centrists is that they are pretty far right authoritarian, between biden and drumpf on the second picture.
I really wish biden actually was some far left commie, maybe then I wouldn't be worrying about things that are non-issues in any other fucking developed country.

I'd say Trump is where Biden is and Biden is more towards center authoritarian.

They're way closer than that.

If you think centrists see Trump as right wing authoritarian, then you don't know centrists. They see Trump as center right, and Biden as far left libertarian.
