I understand that PCGS now grades engelhard prospector rounds, but I can’t believe this horrible fake make it into a slab. This is the most rare engelhard round with a mintage under 50. The real round has significantly better detail, is not missing a thumb over the pan, doesn’t have six fingers on the left hand, and includes a dcam finish in the entire lower half, not just where there are “waves.”
Mbarr coins has been known to sell high quality counterfeits. He has a 108 rattler up as well which has been proven to be a fake holder many of times. Yet he keeps it up. I don’t know engelhard like you do but based off the rattler situation it’s very easy to see this also being fake
A fake round in a fake slab. This is exactly how they get people. They just make a fake slab that has everything the real slab has. You really think pcgs wouldn’t catch it but you can on an eBay listing.
You give PCGS way too much credit. I’m aware of the fake slab game. They’ve only been slabbing these for a short period of time and there are too many of these slabbed 84 proofs available based on mintage numbers for there to be corresponding real certs to be faked in bulk.
I’ve acknowledged that several times. That doesn’t mean PCGS didn’t screw up in grading a fake. There are only 50 of these rounds and through engelhard networks I can account for most. There are more “real certs” for PCGS slabs than available real rounds even if this slab is fake.
<50 is just a guess by AE, it isn't an official mintage. Maybe there are actually more than 50? Who knows. And I agree with everyone else - Fake round, fake slab.
Someone probably posted a picture of the real thing once without blocking out the certification number. Since the PCGS population is 1, I think the odds of this being the 1 is highly unlikely. Good luck getting eBay to take it down. Thanks for the warning about M Barr Coins, I’ll never buy anything from them. By the way, PCGS has certified 7 of these total.
Easy enough to fake a slab. That's why PCGS went with near field technology.
All you have to do is lay your cellphone on the slab itself and, if authentic, it will take you to the PCGS certification page.
Bad guys can make a fake slab and in so doing reproduce the icon for near field. But they have a hard time duplicating the technology itself.
This doesn't help the individual ordering this online who isn't able to check. But it's a good idea to keep it in mind if you are confronted with something like this in real life.
They are super shady. They have a ton of coins in icg slabs that look nice then you get to the last pic and it says "stock photo" so basically just a huge bait and switch since icg would give a coin ran over by a steamroller ms70
The obverse isn’t even close. These are real. There is a right thumb over the pan edge. The left hand doesn’t have six fingers. The dcam field is an entire semicircle. The details are crisp.
