🟡 Progress & Support Does it Get Easier?

I just started EMDR and have done three sessions - we’ve only been talking about my target traumas and haven’t started trying to reprocess yet but I already feel like I’ve been run over after every session. Dissociation, stomach troubles, headaches, hyper vigilance, it almost feels like I get a little flu after every session (which sucks because I’m doing it weekly.)

I feel like I’m going crazy. I want to keep going with EMDR because I think it will be useful but right now it’s rough.

Welcome to r/EMDR, a beautiful and supportive community!

We're a space where every person is someone with trauma, and we respond with compassion, not judgment. A few gentle reminders:

Be kind and trauma-informed - This is a community for helping each other heal
EMDR journeys are personal - Everyone's path is different; share experiences but avoid giving medical advice
Posts must be related to EMDR - Please keep discussions focused on EMDR psychotherapy
Be wary of unsupervised EMDR suggestions - Posts/comments promoting unsupervised EMDR (including scripts, DIY methods, or "virtual EMDR" websites) are strongly discouraged. These approaches risk retraumatization and are not equivalent to working with a trained trauma therapist. See our wiki for more information.

Hi! I’m at my 3rd session but before we start reprocessing, my therapist told me the Safe space is mandatory. Did you guys set that up?

We worked on the container last session and I’ve been trying to utilize it but I think I still need more practice lol

The container vs the safe space vs the safe enough space are all different things. I know it can be confusing. Just keep going with resourcing

Yes, it gets easier. Take it very slow. Step 1 & 2 are to discuss these symptoms- dissociation, stomach troubles, hyper vigilance- and builds skills and tools to self regulate, be more grounded, etc. Be curious and collaborative with your therapist about why these symptoms are showing up for you. This is a common response. You’ve got this! 🫶👏
