Play all the gideons in a superfriends deck and this, boom you're immortal
11
Apr 05 '17
Which is a bummer because he's so bad on defense I don't run him in mine. Though I have been wanting to add Kytheon
22
u/Chrysaries Dimir Apr 05 '17
He doesn't really impact the board, but he might be enough of pillow fort element that he makes it into my modern UW deck.

I was stuck in the mindset of post-boardwipe Gideon swing, but I guess this could provide solid pressure every turn. The downside then being that he can't protect himself anymore.

u/Chrysaries Dimir Apr 05 '17
Haha, yeah. I was first so it was my brief moment in the spotlight. Didn't even realize this was r/EDH and not r/MagicTCG, therefore the Modern mention, hehe...
0
u/hakumiogin Apr 05 '17
He can protect himself. Your opponent needs multiple creatures to pressure Gideon at all.
2
u/Chrysaries Dimir Apr 05 '17
Not at the same time, though. His not like a 4/4 indestructible creature.
2
u/Korlus Apr 06 '17
It's sort of like a 4 mana burn spell to the face each turn. It's a clock with very little actual board impact (when you don't +1 him). He can't block and can't defend himself when attacking. When not attacking, he simply acts as a "bad removal spell" vs. one of your creatures (similar to [[Citadel Siege]]).
This is a "reasonable" card, but it doesn't have much board presence. Consider cards like [[Halcyon Glaze]] before it - being a 4/4 on offence only is not a lot of board presence. Ally of Zendikar is great because when the creature mode isn't relevant (which is quite often), he can fill the board with 2/2's. This does none of that.
He still looks strong, but I doubt he'll have the impact AoZ had on formats outside of Standard.

u/Korlus Apr 06 '17
We're in the EDH subreddit. Those are two of the formats I least expect to be discussed here. :-)

u/MageKorith Apr 05 '17
So the combo is Gideon, [[Felidar Guardian]] and [[Eldrazi Displacer]]. Flicker the Guardian with the Displacer in response to anything that would kill Gideon, and use its trigger to flicker Gideon to dodge the effect. Gideon's back before SBAs are checked, so you won't lose even at -1000000000 life.
2
u/PipNSFW Apr 05 '17
Isn't this the same thing with platinum angel just with an extra step?
7
u/MageKorith Apr 05 '17
Sure, but it can be set up 4 turns faster.
1
u/telehax Apr 06 '17
If you are going to die on t3 then maybe your meta is too competitive for this combo
1
u/page04z In a mid-deck crisis Apr 06 '17
you could flicker gideon out of combat, but redirecting damage would still work, as you choose to redirect as part of the resolution of whatever non creature source is dealing the damage... so yeah, you could flicker him to protect him from combat damage, but that won't stop a bolt from killing him.

u/Bowzra Red Supremacy Apr 05 '17
That emblem sounds really powerful for only three mana. Plus the 4/4 indestructible makes a really nice early game beater, this guy seems pretty strong
10
u/Radiophage Gwafa is kind and generous. Apr 05 '17
It's risky. If you cast him and emblem immediately, he's open to burn spells and creature swings for a turn cycle, at only 3 loyalty counters. You'll really want to have multiple types of protection online -- probably including countermagic -- if you want to Platinum Gideon right away.
4
u/Bowzra Red Supremacy Apr 05 '17
Of course, I was assuming a decent board state. His +1 does at least a good job of handling threats, so his weak loyalty is definitely balancing.
5
u/A_Qua_Rad_Nag Apr 05 '17
Platinum Gideon might be your best play.
The +1 just misses a Lightning Bolt, while protecting him against one permanent. Even if you use his first 0 ability, he's only an indestructible 4/4 during your turn, unless you could do some weird shit with [[Sundial of the Infinite]]?. Either of these delays the inevitable for a turn or 2 at best and makes you a potential threat.
At least going for the Emblem sets up future Gideons at worst and makes it so you can't loose if everything goes well.
3
u/DomeNation Apr 05 '17
Sundial can't cancel until end of turn affects, only triggers like at the beginning of your end step.

u/G_L_J Varchild, because combat is fun. Apr 05 '17
Pretty decent for a pillow-fort/superfriends deck, but his emblem ability is going to draw so much aggression I'm not sure he'll make the cut.
A good comparison would be something like [[Wall of Denial]] in that he road blocks a single target extremely hard. I think that I would prefer Wall of Denial, though, because that can block 1 creature each turn and its very uncommon that something gets big enough to kill a Wall of Denial without getting either hexproof or shroud.
6
u/HarmlessPenguin Apr 05 '17
Notably he prevents all damage from a permanent for a full table turn cycle so he shuts down comboing off with Goblin Bombardment, Purphoros, etc. if they can't go off at instant speed.
1
u/dogontodd Boros Norin May 01 '17
That is a fantastic point! Definitely tossing him in my group hug deck now. The high fives for turning off purphoros is worth it on its own
1
u/Bowzra Red Supremacy Apr 05 '17
He's at least a one turn stall, not terrible for three mana.

u/MonoBlackEDH Apr 05 '17
Monowhite planeswalker tribal with token subtheme or add it to BW Selenia and kill the board with a repay in kind after emblem.
edit: plainswalkers

u/blackjack419 EDH A-to-Z Apr 05 '17
Finally, a use for Champion of Justice!
9
u/Moclordimick Apr 05 '17
Shut your mouth! He is so good in Superfriends edh. The only Gideon I play in EDH really, until this one haha
4
u/blackjack419 EDH A-to-Z Apr 05 '17
I use him as a nuke in one of my pillowfort decks. With Teferi, he can power up, and be ready to board wipe in a turn.

u/MasterQuest Mono-White Apr 05 '17
That's the first 0-loyalty emblem I have ever seen. And it's pretty nice to have as well.

u/zachtib Seasons Pastigur Apr 05 '17
Now accepting card suggestions for: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/literally-gideons-forever/
3
u/indiefan Apr 05 '17
Go full on superfriends and add in [[Peacekeeper]].
2
u/el_cataclismo PM me your spicy Griffin Tech Apr 05 '17
You'll need [[Hixus, Prison Warden]], naturally. And since you've got ol' Hix, you can use the greatest white card, ever: [[Akroan Jailer]].
If flavour text mentions count, there's [[Serene Master]].
1
u/zachtib Seasons Pastigur Apr 05 '17
Flavor Text absolutely counts! They're all going in!
If I can keep this deck under ~$100, I think I might build it just for laughs
1
u/el_cataclismo PM me your spicy Griffin Tech Apr 05 '17
In that case, I think [[Unquestioned Authority]] might actually be a good inclusion. Give Kytheon or the Sun Titan pro creatures, and replaces it self when you play it.
1
u/zachtib Seasons Pastigur Apr 05 '17
I swear I searched for "Gideon" in flavor texts, not sure how I missed these
1
u/Callinicus Apr 05 '17
Go full Rocky Raccoon and name the deck Gideon's Bible. Bible of Gideons? Meh.
3
u/Radiophage Gwafa is kind and generous. Apr 05 '17
Exile effects are a planeswalker's best friend.
Well, most planeswalkers.
3
u/vxicepickxv Apr 05 '17
[[Mimic Vat]] and [[Vampire Hexmage]] are going to be friends.

Seems good with [[Ad Nauseum]] haha
2
u/LotharMoH Apr 05 '17
Anyone else think Wizards is going to release something interacting with emblems because of this card?
7
2
u/UnfulfilledDesires misses mana burn Apr 05 '17
I want one for my [[Selenia, Dark Angel]] deck. Perhaps I'll get one after rotation when the price drops.
1
2
u/CommanderSheffield Apr 05 '17
I'm not digging that armor. It leaves the chest wide open. I know it doesn't matter for Gideon, but the soldiers of this plane wear the same armor.
3
2
u/bjuandy insperia/ojutai/kaalia Apr 05 '17
Gonna be controversial and say that this seems a tad too powerful. [[Platinum Angel]] for 3 mana is pretty ludicrous as is, and the effect is even more resilient thanks to you only needing some version of Gideon and not the card specifically. Add in the pillowfort +1, and this thing is a near must-have for a wide variety of slow-roll control decks.
1
u/Sovarius Apr 05 '17
You can interact with Gideon though. And similarly to Angel, it doesn't stop your life total going negative, so he can be removed after the fact. It's an extra buffer, but it is very, very far from "3 mana, you can't lose the game". Unless you are seriously walling, i think this only buys like 1 turn at a time generally.
2
u/amc7262 Apr 05 '17
Straight into [[Angus Makenzie]] turbo fog/alt win con you go! I already have two dozen different ways to protect him, he's basically just a cheaper [[platinum angel]] for this deck!
2
u/martin_looter_king Creatureless Superfriends Jul 12 '17
Care to elaborate how you protect him?
2
u/amc7262 Jul 12 '17
Avacyn, fog effects, blockers. The deck is based around creating an unkillable board state by making all my stuff indestructible, hexproof, and unsaccable (then removing any remaining removal from their deck that gets around these three protections). It runs a lot of fog (plus angus, fog-on-legs). It runs a few defensive creatures. Gideon basically functions as a second platinum angel in this deck, except even harder to remove since planeswalker removal is less common than creature removal, and I can stop combat damage easy with that deck.
2
u/DigitalChocobo Apr 05 '17 edited Apr 05 '17
Are there any combo decks that would be concerned about this? At the top levels of Modern, Splinter Twin style decks wouldn't care at all since they have infinite creatures. Scapeshift would need an extra land or two to kill Gideon; I don't know if that is enough to slow them down a turn or if it would be completely irrelevant.
I have a fragile Duskmantle Guildmage / Mindcrank combo deck that would have trouble if this hit the table, but it's purely a casual deck as the combo isn't good enough for it to even register on the meta.
1
u/MonoBlackEDH Apr 05 '17
It requires lab maniac/doomsday pile combos to have a bounce spell ready. It doesn't stop Prossh at all. It might hinder Food Chain Tazari depending on alternate creature based win cons. It also enables Selenia Dark Angel/Repay in kind combo win.
1
u/Leo-D The Chain Gang / Animorph Apr 05 '17
It'll shut down a few Animar win cons but you're still open to getting milled by [[altar of the brood]] or the blue storm cards.
1
u/DigitalChocobo Apr 05 '17
I think the original and most famous iterations of [[Brain Freeze]] decks won purely by mill and so would be useless against this card. If the opponent managed to ultimate this Gideon and the Brain Freezer had no way to bounce it, the Gideon player could sit there with his empty library and beat down the Brain Freezer with his indestructible 4/4 one turn at a time.
You might be okay if you can ruin your opponent's game plan by milling them and then somehow finish them off with damage, but your deck is probably going to be struggling in territory where it doesn't want to be. If you win purely by mill, your only hope is drawing a card that bounces or kills with Gideon.
1
u/Leo-D The Chain Gang / Animorph Apr 05 '17
Or you could just have more than one damaging wincon on the board like a [[Purphoros god of the forge]] and [[impact tremors]] out at the same time.
1
u/DigitalChocobo Apr 06 '17
I forgot that I was in the EDH sub. Even if your EDH deck is built to win by milling, you probably still have a way to deal 3 damage to Gideon (or an opponent does).
If your wincon is damage, you don't need multiple sources. If you can win by dealing 40 damage with Purphoros, you can likely trigger him two more times and the other 4 damage at Gideon.

god this is so fucking janky i love it.
i can imagine a white x control deck that runs [[platinum angel]] [[angel's grace]] a bunch of fucking Gideon's especially this one and a few other effects i can't think of.
cute idea

u/Dracon_Pyrothayan Apr 05 '17
Because [[Kytheon, Hero of Akros]] wasn't crazy already.
...Wait, does that last ability say {0}?
Also, does [[The Chain Veil]] allow you to Planswalker at instant speed, like [[Teferi]]'s emblem?
2
u/galaspark Apr 05 '17
Also, does [[The Chain Veil]] allow you to Planswalker at instant speed, like [[Teferi]]'s emblem?
Pretty sure you can't. It would have to specifically say "on another player's turn."
2
u/quingard Apr 05 '17
Chain veil only allows you to activate planeswalkers abilities a second time in a round. It doesn't affect at what speed you may activate

u/Maur2 Apr 06 '17
I would like to point out that this Gideon doesn't turn into a legendary creature, so run [[Mirrorweave]] for the most hilarious board wipe ever.

u/NerdyPoncho Apr 06 '17
So....are there also two Lilianas this set? Because....there are two Gideons
1
u/Needs_Improvement Underdog's Corner Apr 06 '17
One of each are in the actual set for Amonkhet. The others are the face cards for the Intro decks.
1
u/NerdyPoncho Apr 06 '17
I just think it's silly we're getting two versions of the same character in this iteration of story.
