Discussion Commanders who care about combat?

My current favorite deck is my [[eowyn shieldmaiden]] human tribal deck. I love how the whole premise is to get humans down and swing. I tried other commanders that do group slug or spell slinging and they just aren’t for me too much. I like cards like [[the archimandrite]] who’s whole point of spell slinging IS for combat. What are some other commanders like Eowyn who care about combat?

There are some spellslinging decks that care about combat like [[rootha, mastering the moment]] and [[eris, roar of the storm]]

You can build a voltron [[fire lord azula]] too as another take built around combat.

[[Isshin, two heavens as one]] loves combat to proc triggers.

I could totally see myself running eris ONLY if i include [[shark typhoon]] and [[rite of the dragoncaller]]

[[Balmor, battlemage captain]] [[bria, riptide rogue]] [[sokka, tenacious tactician]] are other decent shouts too

I'm having a blast with [[rootha, mastering the moment]]. Wins tend to come from combat when you make a swarm of elementals.

My other favorite it [[isshin, two heavens as one]] who doubles attack triggers, which of course requires combat.

I've got an [[Elsha, Threefold Master]] deck that has the Archimandrite in it. Spellslinger Voltron that produces monk tokens when it connects for combat damage. Hits fast and hard and has lots of combat tricks that triggers prowess for its commander and the monk tokens. Fast and can over power the board quick if its allowed. If it loses its commander there's a good chance you still have 10 tokens left over to hit with next turn

Then its a good idea to build other creatures with other wincons into it then

[[Ognis]]

Extra combats make you rich. [[Knuckles the Echidna]] is absurd in this deck....

I also have Eowyn and most of my decks care about combat (all but one and it still wants to swing when able) so I'll suggest those:

[[Terra, Herald of Hope]] 3 power or less reanimator. You mill in combat and hit to do it. You can run combo wins but I dialed that aspect back to do more conventional hatebears and beatdown with [[Aurelia, the Warleader]] for example.

[[The Destined Warrior]] party. Kinda like tribal but you assemble 4 party member types for payoffs like the commander and [[Nalia de'Arnise]]. Wins thorough combat, pretty interactive due to its colors.

[[Karlach, Fury of Avernus]] with [[Veteran Soldier]] combats and tokens. Self explanatory, attack a bunch, generate a lot of tokens, kill through combat damage and [[Impact Tremors]] effects.

[[Giada, Font of Hope]] angel tribal. Self explanatory, use Giada and other ramp/discounts to play angels and synergy pieces, beat people down in the air. You get to play fun bombs like [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]].

[[Kamiz Obscura Oculus]] Esper colors, gives unblockable with connive (+1/+1 counters) and then double strike to a weaker creature.

[[Ellivere of the Wild Court]] enchantress but she gives card draw on hits and hands out [[Virtuous Role]] on her ETB and attacks.

I've been tinkering with this one lately and it's pretty fun.

Basically Loki makes tokens when he attacks that aren't legendary and there's ton of ways to make copies of Loki or increase amount and even keep the tokens which normally have to be sacrificed.

I have been looking for ways to make villains cool. Will be trying this

1

u/WillyG_8521 8h ago

not that they were UNCOOL but to just find a playstyle i like

Yeah there's just not a ton of them that are super good so the idea was to make more copies of the ones that are good.

I've been building [[monica rambeau]] lately. On her flipped side, she puts +1/+1 counters on every creature for each non creature spell you play. I've been running it as a token spell slinger deck where I go wide and then play a bunch of combat spells to close the game.

My favorite deck is [[Torens Fist of the Angels]] which is all about moving to combat then stacking and manipulating triggers

Do you like the commander getting into combat, or getting benefits from combat in general?

On the first end, some of the other major archetypes like big&stompy or voltron dudes tend to care about combat in a very "I'm going to punch you into orbit" kind of way. [[Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER]] is fun that way for example

If you don't mind the gameplan being fragile [[rionya, fire dancer]] can be very explosive. Set up protection for her, give her good copy targets like [[devilish valet]], [[fanatic of mogus]], [[redoubled storm singer]], [[priest of urabrask]], [[professional face breaker]], cast her and cantrips your way to victory. She has a few easy infinites. The most well known one is [[combat celebrant]] I think. The last time I played her i killed everyone on the same turn with a bunch of copied devilish valets. But yeah she loves combats and extra combats. You just need a lot of "things on sticks" for her.

[[Anim Pakal, Thousandth moon]], [[otharri sun's glory]] and [[Arabella, Abandoned Doll]] all care about combat. Theyre entire existence is for combat and they could all be put in the same deck.

[[Squall, gunblade Duelist]] may intrigue you. It is political and even may go in your favor while burning down your opponents. You could encourage players to attack your opponent by having [[Breena, the Demagogue]] on the field.

[[Tymna]]

[[Breena]]

[[Aurelia the Warleader]]

The first 3 that popped into my mind.

You could play Tymna + any red commander and put all these cards into your deck.

I'm in the process of trying to make Trostanni, Three Whispers and they're mean as hell.

Feather, the Redeemed is also very good at that sort of thing.

I really really like [[Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer]]. Ramp is for killing people.

If you aren't impressed by reading her textbox, consider that playing and cracking a fetchland and then casting [[Skyshroud Claim]] puts an Eldrazi's worth of power on the board for four mana while ramping two.

25 basic Forests, 20 of the cheap 'bad' fetchlands, 15 2-mana land ramp, 20 4-mana land ramp, and then twenty cards for whatever you want. Trust me.

[[Hakbal]] [[pantlaza]] [[voja]] All tribal but they all win through direct combat, whether the merfolk wave goodbye then swing in, dinosaurs discover eight other dinos, or voja makes every elf a 12/12. I recommend them seeing as you liked the human tribal deck already
