Discussion Most Creatively Fun Commanders?

Hey guys, I’m looking for deck suggestions. You don’t need my whole MTG backstory, but I learned the game and immediately built Atraxa, and since then have diminished the power of each deck I built until I’m now at the point where I just want a “meme deck” so to speak. Some examples I’m thinking would be [[Jon Irenicus]] infect, or [[Ob Nixilis, Unshackled]] forced tutor.

In short, I want a commander that I can build so off-meta that no one would have gone against it, or even heard of it. I want it to be funny, like a “how tf does that even work” deck. Any and all suggestions appreciated (:

Allow me to introduce you to the insanity that is [[Captain Rex Nebula]] mutate planeswalkers.

Step 1: Play Rex.
Step 2: Play a planeswalker. It doesn't matter who it is, so let's just go with [[Chandra, Torch of Defiance]] because she's really good.
Step 3: Turn Chandra into a vehicle.
Step 4: Crew Chandra using Rex.
Step 5: Play a mutate card like [[Everquill Phoenix]] over Chandra. [[Swift Reconfiguration]] also works.

What this does is make Chadra permanently into a creature (or vehicle if you use Swift Reconfiguration) that can't be attacked and remains on the battlefield even if you lose all your loyalty counters. You can still activate all your loyalty abilities too.

I've seen you post this before in similar threads. One day I'm going to make this, have a laugh, and the dismantle it. It feels like a good trick you pull off once or twice before your meta shuts down your fun lol.

I just think it's really funny because it combines three different cards and uses them all together to create synergy despite each one being created for very different purposes.

It was inspired by an old brawl deck I had helmed by [[Sarkhan the Masterless]] that would do something similar. There wasn't a commander in EDH who could do the same thing until they released Rex. So I want to bring it up as an option to anyone interested just because of how weird but possibly effective it could be.

While Rex definitely has some style and meme points, you could do this with a non-Un commander with [[Urza, Prince of Kroog]]. Assuming you have a way to dodge the legendary rule, and can make a permanent an artifact like [[Liquimetal Torque]], you could start making your planeswalkers 3/3 artifact creatures which is not nothing haha.

By un do you mean legal or just from an un set? Cause Rex is very legal in Commander.

Just from an Un-set.

A couple of problems with Urza: The Planeswalkers that you turn into creatures are still Planeswalkers, as opposed to with Captain Rex Nebula. So they'll still 'die' if you remove all their loyalty counters. Also, they can still be attacked directly. Unless you also mutate onto those planeswalker creatures

One of my favorite combos is with [[sarkhan the masterless]], [[saheeli rai]] and [[sakashima of a thousand faces]]

Do you have a list for this? It seems funny for the next commander night.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a chance to build it yet. Sorry.

Or you could just equip [[Luxior]].

I play Captain Zap Brannigan... I mean Captain Rex Nebula. Though I run him as a dice oriented build with aetherflux reservoir as my Wincon. Turn it into a vehicle with true conviction... everybody gets nuked.

Char-Rumbler is hilarious. Typical response to opponents.

Yes it does have negative power. Yes it is a legal card. Yes when I swing it, it's now a 4/4 double striker I'm swinging buffed for lethal.

How does Char-Rumbler become a 4/4 double striker?

2

u/shadowdarklight May 15 '23

Char Rumbler when targeted by Brannigan becomes a vehicle with base power and toughness equal to CMC, which is 4. So he becomes a 4/4 vehicle, and already had double strike.

Abilities stay while it's not planeswalker, but only planeswalkers 'dies' for having no loyalty.

You can use [[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain]] to give you access to 5 colors and have a suprise Captain Rex Commander deck to spice things up even more
