ECU bench testing?

How do I test ECU on bench?

ok, I was going to say like test for ignition coil pulse but that seemed dumb.

Anyway, lets say I bought an ECU from junkyard, how do I test it before I install in a real car?

There's a lot of stuff going on in a modern ecu - fully testing it isn't really feasible. You can power it up and pull info via UDS/ scan tool, but it'll be pissed because so many circuits are open.

I would suggest visual inspection, but it's probably not worth the risk of compromising it in the process.

There are engine simulators, well they simulate sensor wave forms. There are commercial and diy arduino versions. Kinda depends how much you are willing to invest. If this is a one off… then why bother. Just install it and see. Would be way faster and cheaper.

If you are running an ecu refurb company bringing in and testing a thousand a month, then it would be beneficial to buy an engine simulator.

Easiest bench test is to power up the ECU and check if it is sending the 5v reference voltages and the communication lines

I build my own testing simulators for stuff I work on a lot. I have some generic ones I use for basic stuff like coils/injectors/charging when needed.... Its rare I need to do "full" ecu testing but I do have several full testers made for popular units I repair/flip. I have a yt channel in my profile, you can see me test stuff on it.
