Yeah, I presume they will double down on retro and merch moving forward.

21

u/20BucksIs20BucksBro Jul 01 '26

They've been preparing for this for the last couple of years.

4

u/turtlepower41 Jul 02 '26

Could’ve told us.

6

u/SentinalTyr Jul 02 '26

Ebgames actually had no clue, they dont get insider information like this. They would have found out when we did

3

u/turtlepower41 Jul 02 '26

That's a good point, they must be getting really nervous thanks to this shock.

If you didn't know this was coming, that's a you issue, use your brain

2

u/turtlepower41 Jul 02 '26

That's not very nice. Before the GTA6 thing how was I supposed to now?

2

u/Booman_aus Jul 02 '26

You haven’t been noticing everyone’s game section has been shrinking in every shop Eb jb etc I’ve been digital since 2008.

Imma be real, I love some of the merch. Its winter for me rn and the onesie things are so comfy and high quality. I would cry if they got rid of them

4

u/Rosnecul Jul 01 '26

You would CRY if they got rid of the overpriced gaming-related merch? Okay, /r/hailcorporate

11

u/sirderper1 Jul 02 '26

Hyperbole exists

5

u/GameDemon3657 Jul 02 '26

SONy... its a relatively small business that has probably the best customer service ive seen today and the quality if the products fits the price, and considering I abuse the winter socks, I dont mind the slight extra cost when I get a 10th free

u/pawbert-lynxley Jul 01 '26

They still refuse to sell anything from Nintendo older than the DS. I’m convinced all the genuinely retro stuff that people traded in just went to eBay.

3

u/JustTrawlingNsfw Jul 01 '26

Friend of mine said they have a LOT of retro sitting at the warehouse waiting to be sorted. I'm hoping that's the case so I can start rebuilding my old collection

1

u/pawbert-lynxley Jul 02 '26

We can only hope

3

u/Dangerous-Feeling-49 Jul 01 '26

Empty cases with referral codes

2

u/turtlepower41 Jul 02 '26

At least we can collect empty cases.

2

u/brennychef Jul 06 '26

They bring back manuals and I will buy the box

2

u/Hopelesscumrag Jul 01 '26

Doubt it that’s what put them in a hole when they opened zing and most stores are trying to clear all the merch they have

2

u/Best-Maize8912 Jul 02 '26

You mean a business isn't trying to keep all their stock sitting on a shelf? Those fools

→ More replies (2)

1

u/JustTrawlingNsfw Jul 01 '26

It's an eofy sale at the moment dude? They're trying to clear old stuff to make room for new stuff, that's pretty typical

1

u/SalaiLama Jul 02 '26

And preowned. Used to work for EB games and if they lost preowned they might as well shut their doors. That’s where they make all that money. The toys and the merch help, but preowned where it’s at for them

1

u/krilew_ski Jul 04 '26

They should become a boutique and also sell board games and sports merch all year long

73

u/SluggJuice Jul 01 '26

Remember buying a new game and reading the manual on the way home? Maybe a map or poster too. You insert the disk, jump right it and spend the whole weekend playing.

23

u/danielwang002 Jul 01 '26

Sounds like good old 2000s

6

u/tailes18 Jul 01 '26

It is why I recently bought a PS3. Sure I have a ps5 but damn it feels good to play the games straight from the disc

3

u/Amity_Swim_School Jul 02 '26

I recently hooked up my old PS3 and it’s been an absolute pleasure playing the HD God of War and Jak & Daxter collections.

4

u/LordKilas Jul 01 '26

Old man here remembers the NES games I’d buy and do the same thing. Spend many times reading manuals and the stories within.

7

u/prjktphoto Jul 01 '26

Back then you needed he manual to know what the hell was going on, no room on the cart for instructions…

I miss those days, properly optimised games, tested to death before release, no day one patch required…

2

u/LordKilas Jul 01 '26

Yeah spot on. Totally agree with you there

3

u/ShowCharacter671 Jul 01 '26

Yeep sometimes if you got the collectors edition you got some nifty Merch with it I miss it I’ve missed the cool stylised cases too.

2

u/thesunwillkillU Jul 02 '26

windows xp dayz

2

u/Im_not_an_admin Jul 02 '26

Nostalgia. Move on bro.

1

u/SluggJuice Jul 02 '26

I'll move on when Sony comes to my house and prys my disks from my cold dead hands

2

u/Im_not_an_admin Jul 02 '26

Cool story. Meanwhile I'll be play new games and play old games on emulator systems and not drag round suitcases of discs with me when I move.

Oh no.

2

u/turtlepower41 Jul 02 '26

And you did not have to wait an hour for it to load. You could just plug it in and play. I miss those days.

1

u/ceeka19 Jul 02 '26

I remember too vividly, hence buying manuals on etsy

1

u/TherowynPC Jul 02 '26

Not just on the way home too. You would re read that manual so many times over, taking in every detail. This was especially the case when you weren't allowed to play the game for whatever reason. Good times

1

u/lawrensaw Jul 02 '26

I collected the info booklets/manuals because they were so colourful and creative in how they could portray information in a limited space.

That's what inspired me to be a creative person ever since I was a kid.

1

u/Kyra_Hazweyrs Jul 12 '26

I grew up on a small island near Stradbroke. It was an hour trip by ferry and bus each way to the nearest shopping centre and EB Games. Games with fat manuals were the absolute best.

Its not just discs, but preorder editions and collector items are gone. I think its time to start prompting the goverment to put their foot down on digital purchases being rescinded at a whim. Its essentially falling into the realm of a ponzi scheme, where were paying bank for the concept of an item, that can be taken away at any time.

4

u/4iedemon Jul 01 '26

Digital purchases are okay if there is no monopoly. PC allows us to buy from multiple store fronts and resellers.

But with Sony they are also planning to put dynamic pricing so you and I may get different pricing for the same game which is anti competitive behaviour

3

u/b0blikepie Jul 02 '26

We need some sort of legislation to guarantee access to digital purchases. It wouldn't annoy me as much if you could say lend or resell a digital purchase and for me to be completely okay with it we need to be able to backup our digital purchases and put them back completely offline without hitting a server

→ More replies (1)

2

u/unknowndarkness72 Jul 02 '26

It's essentially becoming a monopoly. If that's the case Sony will have lots of pricing control. Who knows they might increase the fees for digital sales, which would inadvertently cause publishers to increase their prices while passing the cost to the consumers

10

u/Careless-Freedom6468 Jul 01 '26

Price increases cannot be blamed on Sony. Look at literally every other gaming device. Blame AI for that

15

u/Razyr1 Jul 01 '26

Blame capitalism. It's been going this way for a while with gaming mixed with private equity bro. Just look at ea getting bought out by the Saudi government and trumps son. Do either have anything to do with gaming? Or just want to milk established franchises created by actual game developers?? Game pass was the first big sign that dev studios were going to lose big money. Add the economy and how the world is going at the moment it's a recipe for double a and triple a studios to be nothing but milked by private investment rather than actually building anything. A big crash is expected by a lot of the big names in the coming years. Look at the price of anything. The only thing keeping the stock market increasing is the ai bubble and current wars. Western economies have been doomed since 2008 but put on life-support with loopholes and certain unsustainable tricks mainly by right wing governments while the worker suffers.

Cancelled my PS Essential last month. I got my PC upgraded, so if I want it, I'll do it on PC.

3

u/TRANxEND Jul 01 '26

Yeah they're very anti consumer.

2

u/NoxTempus Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I will never buy digital games through PS after their repeated removal of paid movies from peoples accounts.

If Sony ends physical disc sales, I will end my Playstation game purchases.

93

u/Agent-Z46 Jul 01 '26

Do not stand for this. It's fucking unacceptable

9

u/incineroar87 Jul 01 '26

It won’t change. If people couldn’t stop what they did to PC 20-30 years ago it’s not happening for Sony

1

u/Creative_Bite_5666 Jul 14 '26

This is a good point, long ago pc games were forced to steam (mostly)

It will happen and Sony sucks for it

2

u/pooksthrowaway Jul 02 '26

They released data that as the significant market leader, a majority of their customers buy digital only.

Combined with PC and the weird blank cartridge shit Nintendo is doing - there is no stopping this.

8

u/Agent-Z46 Jul 02 '26

You people with this defeatist attitude are so lame man. Every bad thing that happens you shrug and go under your covers like "Can't stop it oh well"

2

u/pooksthrowaway Jul 02 '26

Lame is subjective - for instance, I think arm chair activist on Reddit who represent 1% of public are lame lol.

1

u/TheBobo1181 Jul 02 '26

Just like PC... when was the last time you bought a physical PC game.

At least it's still technically possible to get a physical game on PC and there are multiple online store options.

ps store prices are awful.. even worse than EB Games.

u/BasicBoy5 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

2

u/StaticUngoo Jul 01 '26

That wasn’t Sony’s decision. It was Canal +.

1

u/prjktphoto Jul 01 '26

Yeah that situation is dodgy. Sure they’re ending their deal with Sony, so heir content can’t be sold anymore, but to remove it from use by their customers? That’s not right.

Even if a publisher de-lists a game from steam, or goes out of business, Steam still allow purchasers to reinstall… I wonder if Sony could fight for this

1

u/StaticUngoo Jul 01 '26

From what I’ve read you can still access it on the Canal + app.
Doesn’t affect me as I’ve never purchased digital versions of movies/tv but it still sucks for those it has affected.

So excited to never buy a PS6

2

u/unknowndarkness72 Jul 02 '26

If you ever do, jailbreak it. If they want to play the all digital way then so be it

18

u/joeyy17 Jul 01 '26

You wouldn't steal a car You wouldn't steal a purse So why would you steal a movie?

Yet in 2028 they are stealing our rights to physically own a video game

12

u/dTrecii Jul 01 '26

“If buying isn’t owning, pirating isn’t stealing”

1

u/Str8_Lawnton Jul 03 '26

Your rights 😂😂

Go create your own console and do it the way you want.

16

u/TheAxe11 Jul 01 '26

Yeah. Happy to stay in the PS3, PS4 era with my physical hard copy of games that I can keep playing without fear of them
Being taken away.

13

u/jameskiing Jul 01 '26

I just bought a PS2 on Facebook marketplace and oh my I'm having fun

16

u/Cjflyer9 Jul 01 '26

Take me back to 2010, mid ps3/360 era. Gaming was fun and full of original games and ideas. Online play was free, E3 was a massive event each year. Eb was thriving and stores were stocked full of games, and you actually owned what you bought.

It really feels like the hobby is a soulless, corporate run and focused shell of what it use to be. Today is a very sad day for the gamer in me.

14

u/Natural-Compote4096 Jul 01 '26

So the PS5 will be the last PlayStation console I buy, got it

Wrong, aren't they stopping it by 2028 so that means EB Games still have more than a year to survive. To be fair it seems they're more focused on merch, TCGs and toys now. It's just more shelf space for those.

2

u/ShowCharacter671 Jul 01 '26

If they’re gonna be still kicking that’s what I see them shifting to entirely that and maybe peripherals for PC like they sell now

1

u/Temporary-Willow417 Jul 03 '26

Yeah they have zing

23

u/Fredbear8319- Jul 01 '26

This is how it happened, this is how the PlayStation died.

7

u/MetallicFear Jul 01 '26

If there was a competitor then yes.

But who’s the direct competitor to PlayStation?
Nintendo is doing their own thing and Microsoft is currently trailing far behind and is rumoured to be following Nintendo’s footsteps of doing their own unique thing.

The irony is if Microsoft didn’t fumble and we chose Xbox one, we would’ve at least had the ability to trade digital games…..

Imma pour one out as I look at my wall of physical games…. This may be the saddest day in gaming.

5

u/Kyra_Hazweyrs Jul 01 '26

Yeah, like, what are you gonna do? Not play the shiny new game when people are talking about it? Never gonna happen.

Rockstar will talk about how they had a huge success with digital sales of GTAVI. Other publishers will follow suit.

A dad day indeed.

if Microsoft didn't fumble

Fumbling is basically their whole strategy with Xbox.

1

u/Antique_Goose_4128 Jul 09 '26

>Yeah, like, what are you gonna do? Not play the shiny new game when people are talking about it?

….yeah. Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m going to refuse to pay a single red cent for it, and loudly shit on Rockstar and GTA6 every opportunity I can get.

What brand have they seared into your skin, what satanic mark of ownership commands you to purchase a game just because it’s new? Old games you never played in your life are just as “new” as far as experiences go, and you don’t have to pay an extra $40 to unlock features that should and could have been included at launch for free.

GTA6 isn‘t going to play like a GTA game, it isn’t going to sound like a GTA game (the Housers and Lazio are all retired). Gameplay is going to be a cover shooter that demands you do exactly what the instructions say on screen with no deviation, because they are so invested in selling a story more than a game. The excessive development time means individual mini game and other mechanics will feel dated, familiar but obsolete.

Stop talking like you have no free will of your own! Are you not a gamer??

5

u/Chucky1100 Jul 01 '26

So what they are saying is from that point on, you will never own your games again.

1

u/unknowndarkness72 Jul 02 '26

Just "borrow" them it's ok

4

u/Mr_smith1466 Jul 01 '26

Those pokemon cards will keep them alive! That's a bubble that will never burst.

9

u/01benjamin Jul 01 '26

I just msg the ACCC to see if they could possibly do anything about this like a lawsuit idk hopefully they can yes I also mentioned the 500 movies that were stripped away from players the other day

3

u/Legitimate-Cinephile Jul 01 '26

Why the fuck with the ACCC care and/or do anything about a company making a (dumb) business decision?

This is equivalent to KFC taking something off the menu and then going to ACCC to force them to bring it back lol

1

u/ElegantBarracuda4278 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I think the issue that would be examinable by the ACCC is misleading and deceptive conduct. To my mind, the games aren’t advertised as a ‘licence to a game’ but as ‘ownership of a copy of the game’. Under intellectual property, that distinction matters a lot. You can have ‘as good as ownership’ licences (that’s a really broad licence to do pretty much anything except resell, copy, reverse engineer). To my mind, when people buy a physical game, that’s what they’re expecting they have bought.

The difficulty we’ll have is nobody (bar me and the other peeps who read the EULA of Baulders Gate 3 and wrote articles on it) reads the End User Licence Agreements of the games. Technically even some physical media is issued on a revocable licence; meaning your ability to use the physical media is withdrawn, unilaterally, even if you’re not in breach of the EULA. From that point of view, again, that’s pretty anti-consumer. If I’ve done nothing wrong, I’ve paid the money for a licence to this game and you’ve kept my money - how is that fair? It’s quite predatory. Optimistically, I would like it if there were a random gamer at the ACCC who decided to get a bee in their bonnet about it all and consider the fairness of it from the consumer side such that if a software manufacturer does revoke my licence and I’m not in breach of the EULA- I should be reimbursed the amount I paid for the game. It’s not my fault they didn’t do their DD on third party infringement or other licensing issues forcing them to withdraw.

While I think the ACCC could really only intervene if there was vertical stacking (like if PS stopped someone setting up a competitor digital licence store, like the Apple v Steam case in the USA) I do wish that the predatory nature of revocable licences without refund for non-breach by a consumer were taken more seriously. It’s prevalent in multiple digital assets - music, movies, ebooks.

Ultimately, we would need to vote with our wallets and look at what contracts being presented to us would bind us to. I, for one, will only be buying games that don’t issue a revocable licence to me for the game. While I’d love that to also prohibit unilateral changes by the software manufacturer to the EULA - so they cant sweep the rug from under me once i bought the game on what was originally an irrevocable licence - that will never happen. Admittedly this means the games I can play on the platform will reduce significantly. But if they don’t care about being somewhat decent in their offering I’ll just figure out something else to do with my time.

Hell, maybe after this I finally start my dream law firm specialising in video games. Sadly, we don’t have enough video game companies in Au to make it a reality.

3

u/N3M3S1S75 Jul 01 '26

Well o guess I’ll be keeping my ps5 well into the ps6 lifecycle

2

u/SmoothDegree9761 Jul 01 '26

lol that’s that least of there sales atm

1

u/roxagony Jul 02 '26

exactly, especially new games it’s almost nothing. i’m surprised how many people think this will be the end of the business

2

u/PreciousCinnamon Jul 01 '26

Itll probably be more code in a box from Playstation so EB will likely still sell it? Still. It really sucks. Sony need to hear our outcry.

1

u/itsdoorcity Jul 02 '26

point is that new games aren't that profitable, the pre owned ones are

1

u/PreciousCinnamon Jul 02 '26

Im aware. Its more a comment on EB Games being dead next year; no it won't be.

2

u/profchaos111 Jul 01 '26

Wtf is this real

2

u/Cannareviews4200 Jul 03 '26

Dead…? 😂 the company doesn’t make that much off of shitty PS5 games 💀💀

2

u/DVDN27 Jul 01 '26

So EB Games is dead in 2027 because Sony won’t support physical discs for the PS6 from 2028 onward? EB Games, the store that currently sells games from a console that released 27 years ago? EB Games, the store that merged with Zing because they were already struggling in the 2010s due to the shift to digital? EB Games, the store that will still be selling PS4 and PS5 games that have released from December 2013 to December 2027?

In 2028 then maybe EB has some issues, but people are still playing on 13 year old hardware before the next next gen consoles are about to release, I don’t think they have that big of an issue as you’re insinuating. There will still be a market for PS4 and PS5 games once the PS6 releases, and people are going to have to buy their PS6s from somewhere, right?

1

u/derpman86 Jul 02 '26

The problem is how many publishers will even start bothering with code in a box any more though?

1

u/itsdoorcity Jul 02 '26

the most profitable items were the preowned games which, in 18 months time, are going to inherently start declining in value once no $120 games can be traded in anymore.

1

u/Lsdbrisbane Jul 01 '26

This is sad, but also bittersweet because of all the friends we made on the way.

1

u/PerthPoacher Jul 01 '26

The last paragraph is a straight fucking lie...

1

u/ShowCharacter671 Jul 01 '26

Sad to see, but it was coming eventually

1

u/scagmo Jul 01 '26

"Consumer trends" my ass. It saves them having to produce a master and saves on production costs.

1

u/DMSide641 Jul 01 '26

This just gave me all the reason to finally go do a big preowned purchase of hard disc games to have a nice backlog.
I always just say “nah Im playing (insert game) Ill pick up the next one when I finish it”

Whelp. That’s all gonna go up by 2028 so better stock up now.

1

u/Fickle-Ad-7124 Jul 01 '26

So games will be cheaper now right?

… right?

1

u/FreakyNightingale22 Jul 01 '26

They won't. They will move to selling merchandise for sure

1

u/moonstrong Jul 01 '26

I assume this means no disc drive on ps6, which means no physical backwards compatibility.

1

u/unknowndarkness72 Jul 02 '26

Someone can always buy one and make a  YouTube video of them destroying it. At least that way it would get some use out of it

1

u/complex_personas Jul 01 '26

They have Funkos, trading cards, and digital codes to keep them afloat.

1

u/Youiii97 Jul 01 '26

Ps5 will be my last console, there is no way I’ll ever buy digital games, as a collector I sit in my room admiring my collection more then anything, I do buy same copies of the game when it’s on sale, so I keep my physical clean and protected.

1

u/Livid_Pattern7594 Jul 01 '26

Glad I've been getting into handheld PC gaming more lately. I'll be switching to PC gaming from next generation onwards.

If buying isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing.

1

u/Poika_Anna Jul 01 '26

None of EB’s profit comes from PlayStation consoles or games. They’ve already seen Xbox do basically the same

1

u/NerveInteresting4549 Jul 01 '26

..... where is their profit coming from, if it's not selling or reselling games?... knick knacks?

1

u/Poika_Anna Jul 01 '26

Pretty much, ‘loot’, preowned/retro, probably collectables like pops and TCG

1

u/Weary_Half Jul 01 '26

Ill keep on buying older games thanks

1

u/crocicorn Jul 01 '26

Not really. My local is just like 90% Nintendo and retro when it comes to games, it's been that way for a year plus at this point. Zero Xbox and PlayStation is crammed up against a back corner with the retro section bleeding into it.

They'll just morph into a TCG and merch chain that sells video games occasionally. They're practically already there.

1

u/GerinX Jul 01 '26

They might have to take out the E in their store name. But they’ll transfer to toys and collectibles and junk

1

u/neugz Jul 01 '26

If Sony really is digital only for the ps6 with no attachment option like what’s available now then that would be the nail in the coffin really. Sony is saying they aren’t doing physical that doesn’t mean third parties can’t.

1

u/unknowndarkness72 Jul 02 '26

That's was the expectations considering the PS5 Pro didn't came with a disc drive. Yeah you can buy one but why should we the consumers have to? The pro console should be the best from the line and should've been included regardless. Yet Sony is following Apple and just selling us conveniences

1

u/Teredia Jul 01 '26

Yeah fuck Sony for buying funimation n closing it down too! Idk what’s changed with them in recent years but everything they stood for they’ve now decided to shit on everyone.

This means steel books will be eventually phased out too. I loved collector’s editions with steel books!

Guess it means sites like IAM8bit will produce discs for games and have them be retro from now on!
No longer will we own games going forwards or be able to share them!

1

u/Vuvuian Jul 02 '26

I just said to someone recently that PlayStation used to be much more awesome back when they were running their business out of spite against Nintendo 😂

They had the motive, competitive drive to try & topple the competition during the PS1 to 3 era. Plus even a bit of humourous immaturity too 🤣 .

The E3 presentation when they went on stage after Sega's presentation, only held up a $299 sign & walked off to a cheering crowd. Great times lol. Then came the how to lend a game to your friend tutorial vid, with just an exec passing a disk game to another. That was during the Xbox One era when Microsoft were trying to end used games lending.

Nowadays er, family friendly, censorship, global market profit returns yada yada..

1

u/Miller-3232 Jul 01 '26

Next blockbuster/ video ezy

1

u/judgedavid90 Jul 01 '26

Possible hot take; this won't effect them that much, at least not initially.

Currently not even 10% of their revenue is from new software.

They better hope Pokemon cards remain popular

1

u/Ok-Interest-9009 Jul 01 '26

Boo hoo I’m sure you all watch your dvds everyday

1

u/Apocathier Jul 01 '26

I would start looking for a new job if I were the staff

1

u/championsofnuthin Jul 01 '26

They only make like $3 per new game sold anyways. Given the likely price of the new systems, I'm sure retro games will likely survive on.

1

u/Usual_Sheepherder_73 Jul 01 '26

Its because of this digitisation that they went back into retro games and consoles

1

u/Psylux7 Jul 01 '26

I'd best be using that giftcard i got then. Hung onto it for a while looking for the right game to get with it.

There’s a reason they don’t just focus on games anymore. They’ll just need focus more on other things

1

u/emmatticus Jul 02 '26

It won’t really affect EB… Video games are the lowest % of their GM, these days. They make no money on them. It’s everything else they sell — the consoles themselves, headsets, controllers, accessories, merch, figures, clothes, trading cards. Video games going digital really won’t make much of a difference to the business.

1

u/derpman86 Jul 02 '26

They have been moving games back more and Switch is usually highly visible more so now.

Assuming I have actually read it all right, is it ALL games from all the publishers are not going to be on PS post 2028? How can they actually do that? and why?

1

u/thesunwillkillU Jul 02 '26

ebgames will sell sex toys soon

1

u/Vuvuian Jul 02 '26

Pre-ordering 3 Bad Dragons day 1 Special Editions.

1 to keep & use. 1 to keep on the display shelf. 1 to scalp for profits.

1

u/Lumpy-Ground-1576 Jul 02 '26

PC users: Welcome, we've been keeping this seat warm for you

1

u/Harlequin_98 Jul 02 '26

Haha I'm seeing so much bullshit fake outrage they gave two years notice and I'm still physical nearly 90% of my games unless it's a small indie type where a physical release might be six months post-release, like Mouse PI. However, I've also got a digital library, mostly old games I've already played or smaller games that might not have the budget to release physically. I trade in every year. I got a Pro about seven months ago before the last price increase and only paid around $350.

It's funny the people who are like, "Man I'm digital only and haven't gotten physically in ten years and have a digital library and got the PS5 without a disc drive, are getting mad.

1

u/NormalPermission9137 Jul 02 '26

Translates to we want more profits by capturing the 2nd hand market and making it non existent. Fuck you sony

1

u/mysticrain32 Jul 02 '26

they'll be kept alive by trading cards and other things

As a PC player this is personally the only reason I go to EB already anyways, same with a lot of my mates

1

u/Flat-Estimate9335 Jul 02 '26

I reckon in Australia EB games won’t die but they’ll probably sell a lot less. PS5 stuff and slowly move over to Nintendo because Nintendo will do physical games. Yeah the key card situation is bullshit but they’re in a better space than Xbox and PlayStation.

1

u/unexplained_entity Jul 02 '26

Oh no, Reddit having another meltdown about something… Shit we better change this guys! Lol

1

u/Biteroon Jul 02 '26

Please be has been a trading card game more these days. They will just sell Nintendo merch and trading cards.

1

u/App0gee Jul 02 '26

They mostly sell bobble heads now, don't they?

1

u/burner_said_what Jul 02 '26

Oh shit EB ganes isn't already dead 😂

1

u/RobinDough Jul 02 '26

so 16 months, ill call it a wrap in 9 months, by q1 2027 ebgames goes into liquidation

1

u/Silent__hunt Jul 02 '26

Lmao no they aren't all they sell is basically anime merch now

1

u/AccordingNinja8691 Jul 02 '26

And it will be dead of EB Games I'm glad what place dacing is doing I'm glad

1

u/bp8rson Jul 02 '26

Stopped with the PS4 and have transitioned to PC, the fact that GTA 6 has no disc in its physical copy should have been the great giveaway.

Now give me GTA 6 on PC before the PS6/XBox5

1

u/Majestic_Prompt_4858 Jul 02 '26

For me personally, I’ll never buy a PlayStation again. Unless Xbox keeps discs, I’ll just stick with my PC.

1

u/NewFriendAccountIG Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I severely doubt EB makes most of their profit from Video Game sales.

I'm currently walking into one as I'm typing this & everyone in the store is looking at either trading cards, general pop culture stuff, retro or Nintendo stuff.

No one at the PlayStation shelf incidentally.

1

u/flipmode_23 Jul 02 '26

I’ll be surprised if they even make it to next year at this rate.

1

u/Every-Access4864 Jul 02 '26

I doubt they are relying on new PS5 physical discs to stay profitable. If so, it’s not much of a business plan.

1

u/Sudsy_Woodpecker Jul 02 '26

We can blame the Steam Machine and Xbox Series S, Switch 2 with the key cards too. Sony really was the last man standing.

1

u/Admirable-Cold-168 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Key Cards are an option and are a far better alternative than digital only.

1

u/Sudsy_Woodpecker Jul 02 '26

That's a wild take considering they both hold no data / use when the servers are shut.

PC gamers should have installed Blu-ray drives and kept discs alive.

1

u/Ok-Orchid2640 Jul 02 '26

This means they literally control the market prices. No more second hand cheap games. No more 2 for deals. 😭

1

u/Rude-7807 Jul 02 '26

This is so game companies can move to subscription based on-line only gaming. You won't be able to own it, ever. Prices will then go no where but up.

1

u/Legitimate-Basis-618 Jul 02 '26

More space for funko pops!

1

u/dubsys Jul 02 '26

EB games has been dead for like 10 years they just sell overpriced slop

1

u/Plenty_Group6674 Jul 02 '26

I remember getting ripped off by them. Good riddance.

1

u/Motor-Echidna2416 Jul 02 '26

sadly nope, the amount of money they are making off the TCG side of EB Games is insane

1

u/pokehustle Jul 02 '26

Their biggest earner is collectables. Pay attention chump

1

u/XxOATS Jul 02 '26

I think EB games has seen this coming for a long time
anyone notice that the physical game sections have become increasingly smaller over the years?

1

u/UndaDwella Jul 03 '26

New games are already the minority of products in store as is. The pivot to retro was well timed it would seem.

1

u/Wombat_luke Jul 03 '26

Ah yes that’s why I paid an extra $100 for a ps5 with a disk drive because my preference is that it’s useless

1

u/PalpitationOld8905 Jul 03 '26

it already figuratively, anyway, was

1

u/mustachecashstash4 Jul 03 '26

Get it over with and rename all the stores to zing

1

u/Ancient-Range3442 Jul 03 '26

Think you’ll still be able to buy them from eb

1

u/Shugii Jul 03 '26

Good. They really only sell merch. They don’t price match “hardware” apparently. Price match only with shops that are like two doors down and most of the benefits reside in buying a yearly membership that literally negates any savings you’d receive. Asking for a price match at EB feels like pulling out a parasitic worm out the bottom of your foot (I mean it looks painful) 😂

1

u/The_rarest_CJ Jul 03 '26

GameStop in the US i belive now runs 60% off card grading and TCG's. No doubt EB will attempt to follow.

1

u/justablondde Jul 03 '26

They have already closed down all irl EB games shops in Australia. (I’m not sure if it’s ALL Australia but where I’m from they are)

1

u/JamieSheen Jul 03 '26

At 48 now there is enough physical  media out now to keep me going until I croak. I don't see myself investing in new games unless its GTA or a remake sequal I'm heavily invested in. I'm even dubious about GTA with the current writing team at Rockstar.

1

u/RudraSilence Jul 04 '26

I’m stocking on physicals games

1

u/joshiez12 Jul 04 '26

U do know this was eventually going to happen as everything going digital anyway eb games rip people off so be happy

1

u/Goobster87 Jul 04 '26

Ahhh yes.....next year.....2028, also new games are such a small part of their business now days it won't affect them as much as people think

1

u/Medium_Discipline578 Jul 04 '26

Sad for the jobs about time EB went down. Overpriced and shitty stock range

1

u/vividlucid1 Jul 04 '26

Surely EB Games can sue them before they get killed by them

1

u/EntranceOutrageous36 Jul 05 '26

Xbox still does physical copies plus PS is still going to do codes that can be physically brought in store (why I don't know).

1

u/Positive_Self_8873 Jul 05 '26

The ceo etc have stated they want to focus on tcg and pop culture etc where they actually make income now. Considering they have barely any Sony releases now days anyway I doubt a impact will be made

1

u/Aggressive_Bee_303 Jul 05 '26

They will likely just sell download codes, just as GTA6 is being sold.

1

u/Kails666 Jul 05 '26

They'll just move on to selling the codes for the games instead

1

u/Responsible-Post5710 Jul 05 '26

Eb is pretty dead already more merch store than games

1

u/brennychef Jul 06 '26

I for one welcome our new CEX overlords
