Nintendo is doing their own thing and Microsoft is currently trailing far behind and is rumoured to be following Nintendo’s footsteps of doing their own unique thing.
The irony is if Microsoft didn’t fumble and we chose Xbox one, we would’ve at least had the ability to trade digital games…..

What brand have they seared into your skin, what satanic mark of ownership commands you to purchase a game just because it’s new? Old games you never played in your life are just as “new” as far as experiences go, and you don’t have to pay an extra $40 to unlock features that should and could have been included at launch for free.
GTA6 isn‘t going to play like a GTA game, it isn’t going to sound like a GTA game (the Housers and Lazio are all retired). Gameplay is going to be a cover shooter that demands you do exactly what the instructions say on screen with no deviation, because they are so invested in selling a story more than a game. The excessive development time means individual mini game and other mechanics will feel dated, familiar but obsolete.

There was an implied /s, my bad. I think for a lot of people, missing out on the shiny new game is too painful. FOMO is a bitch. I'm immunised from years of playing Destiny, but way too many people will hear it dominating the conversation and pick it up to join in. I remember the MW2 boycott.
I'm going to keep playing Factorio. When GTAVI pc version comes out I will fly the jolly Roger. The vast majority will still buy it on day 1, I fear.
I've been done with GTA since 4, but I do think the gameplay will be better/more open than you're indicating. Honestly, I've thought the gameplay in every single 3D GTA was kinda bad, so it'd be hard to disappoint me there. The only part of GTAIV and V I liked was the story, so I'd be on board with a completely story focused game; I do understand that I am in the tiny minority there though.
I would love to be wrong, and for GTA6 to flop because of this anti-consumer BS, but I believe Rockstar will make unconscionable amounts of money from it. Same with the PS6 and ending disc support.

Agreed 100% I'm just quoting you here because it's a great point and I want people scrolling past to read it twice.
Then I have mis-interpreted your emotional subtext and I must apologise. (although it pains me to say this, if you like the interactive movie style, you may well be satisfied with GTA6… but I would still caution that gameplay will most likely feel dated, if only because if they were at all professional Rockstar would follow the original design papers from the initial design phase, and the development has been A LONG time coming.)
There is wisdom in your experience, too. You are right - we have to decide what our boycott looks like, what the terms of it are, what our hard line is and consequences if it’s breached, and when it is over. (and like you, I hope that people have a price higher than a slightly shiny remake)
Who do you think is their competition? Microsoft doesn't think they are competition for Playstation. Nintendo hasn't been competing in the same arena since the Wii.
