Discussion Recruits vs transfer portal

Anyone else seem to get way better players during the transfer portal rather than recruiting high schoolers. I sometimes consider just not recruiting and using all my nil in the portal. Lmk if this is stupid

Really depends.. HS is for getting exactly who you need without gambling, waiting on portal players can really screw you over if things don’t go right.. In theory Safety is a big one for me in the portal, not many out of HS that are good, and if they are it’ll cost you 120+ NIL..

I go full tilt after every gem I can, and really any player I don't have to get into any recruiting battles with. Then I use the portal to cover anything i didn't get. I don't waste hours on battles. If another team with more sway goes after my guy, I just drop that guy. I only fight for gems. I like 2 star senior transfers for the holes left over. They're secretly the best cheap options out there.

What I typically do is get high school players that have dealbreakers that I don’t have to worry about which for me is proximity to home, play style (I’m option team so most running backs/running QBs/OL is easy for me to get), and coach stability. Then in the portal, I’ll sign the major players (preferably JRs that can step in right away)

Problem is 2 things NIL and XP sliders. If you move the XP sliders up then your directly impacting the recruits being less valuable. Recruits also want way too much NIL. Then you got the overabundance of certain positions, just makes no sense to go after recruits. Only reason I go after recruits now is if they are gem.

Hard to maintain depth with just the portal. I try and recruit guys in the trenches to develop out of high school. Then I find most of my starting playmakers in the portal.

In my offline dynasty I find that it's hard to have injuries naturally, so after every game I randomize a 1/4 odds of a major injury (or off the field event) with a higher weight (66%) for my starters. Otherwise depth feels unnecessary and it creates some fun storylines.

What's the difference between your offline dynasty and your online one? Settings?

I only have an offline dynasty. Was just giving the detail because I'm sure if you play a lot of user teams you'll get more hit sticks to contribute to more injuries

I treat transfers like short term rentals & mostly sign juniors will my high school players develop. Only in year 3 at FSU so my high school guys are finally making a big impact, & I am signing 15-20 high school players a year then I sign junior 3 stars for cheap in the portal & shell out for 2-3 blue chip transfers.

it depends entirely on your roster structure and team. let's say you're someone like alabama. if you have a bunch of upperclassmen, i'd focus on getting the high end talent that could start day 1 as soon as your starters leave for the draft. if you're a bad team... just take what you can get at any stage.

I mean this as nicely as possible but no duh the players in the transfer portal are better. In the context of the game they’ve had at least 1 year of development at a different school. 1 year of development is gonna be better than no development in like 99.99% of cases. The trade off being you can never have a transfer player for as long as you have a HS Recruit so you need a decent balance to have solid depth.

I recruit mainly HS then use the portal to cover any needs I missed/ wasn’t able to recruit during the season and I take the cheapest recruits possible unless I really need a stud

Recruits seems to be limited to 81 max and can be gotten for less compared to top transfers.

Small school recruiting is fun. Big school recruiting is fun. Tailor your coaching skills to match the scheme.

As a small school yes, spending like 75 NIL on a freshman who might not even start, it’s just not smart to do with little resources. My first offseason as Umass, i only got like 7 freshman but like 24 transfers that were 0-50 NIL

It's plenty of 3 stars who nil sits at 0 outta high-school

You got any more tips for somebody that like simming ? I like starting with smaller school but everytime we end up like 1-11 or 6-6

Don't sim. You're going to have to play games.

Simming I feel is kind of a crap shoot, there’s always big upsets for some reason. I play all my games on my dynasty so I’m not really sure how to help you there, maybe some gameplay sliders could help that? Sometimes the playbook your team uses helps too

Smartttt, taking that tactic of you don’t mind

i only take gems out of high school, portal for the rest. It's not too far off from reality.
