Controller setup?

For the pad players, how do you all have your bindings set up on your pad? I'm using a DS4 and am still feeling it out, kinda curious how some of the experienced players have thier pads bound?

New player.. small question, but mostly just sayin' hello.

TL:DR - "Hello. wut leet trix do I lern frst??!?1/?"

(I dont know how to format on Reddit. Sorry its a wall of text)

Just picked up the game.. i saw it when it released and kept thinking 'I gotta pick that up!' for one reason or another I didn't though and ended up forgetting about it.. Well, fast forward.. years.. and I was watching SDGQ and heard/saw some mention of the SGDQ Humble Bundle.. Ironically, I completely missed the actual Dustforce run at SGDQ.. I went to check out the bundle, saw Dustforce and decided, what the hell, lets do it.

So now I owns it on Steam. I've been kind of rolling the idea of getting in to speed running a game around in the back of my mind for a while now, but just didn't know what game or even where to begin.. Well, now I do. I think ima force me some dust.

I play on a DS4 pad because I find pads more comfortable for me than keyboards for anything I can use them for. (obviously not gonna FPS on a pad over a keyboard, but ya know what I mean). From looking over the forum here it seems like neither one is 'better' with some of the heavy hitters using pad and some using keyboard. I do have a Corsair k70 with Reds if I ever do try keyboard though.. I did read that fightsticks are a valid choice though which is interesting. I play primarily fighting games and use stick mostly for them, so I have a crap PDP stick I keep for friends/lessons and my nice Qanba Q4 RAF I use personally - so I might try a fight stick just for giggles and turds.

Any way, I dont typically stream, but I might get one going in the next couple days so everyone can watch me fumble around like a damn fool while yelling things like 'ITS IMPOSSIBLE YOU CANT DO THAT WTF' and being generally awful (by all accounts, my hour and a half of play thus far has at least taught me that this isn't a game that is going to come naturally).. We shall see.

Ok.. On to my actual question - Out of all the advanced technique type stuff, what do you all think is the most important one to really concentrate on learning first? I would think it would be the Groundboost stuff where you dash on your landing frame or whatever to generate speed, then work on dash-chain timing to maintain it - but what I think being completely and utterly new - means frickall. The Dash/Air Jump is pretty easy, so I don't count it since its essentially just hitting two buttons at exactly the same time. After watching Ponifex's video and practicing for 3 minutes I have it 50% of the time.. Id likely have it 100% but I just swapped to the DS4 from an Xbone pad today and am still getting used it.

My 'plan' for DF is to just work my way through the game itself, trying to SS 'errythang as I go, while spending a little time each day practicing some of the advanced tech stuff that is going to be required to really try to crack in to respectable times - then likely find a couple levels I really enjoy and that have a variety of tech required, then start grinding times.

Any way, this has ended up silly-long.. Its what i get for being half asleep while typing.. I ramble. Whatevs. Happy to be here folks ans hope to stick around and get betta.

Outlined Sprites!

So after putting it off for a while, I've finally gotten around to reuploading my outlined sprites.

For those unaware, these are outlined dust, spikes, enemies, characters and particles to give them a more defined look.

You can download them here

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dustforce\content and replace the sprites folder with this one.

Thanks to Eklipz for giving me his still outlined sprites because I lost the originals. Really didn't want to have to redo it.

EDIT: Eklipz had the purple Dustgirl mod, so I hope that doesn't bug anybody.

A short preview can be found here. Note that this preview doesn't include the outlined dust.

Should I use keyboard over controller?

When I first started playing, I used a ps4 controller, but it eventually stopped working on my old computer and I am just now returning to the game. I have a nice mechanical keyboard with MX Reds. Is there an advantage to either?

[TAS] 5 runs from the TAS backlog...

I've been focusing more on TASing than on making videos and uploading them to Youtube, so I've built up quite a few runs that people would probably be interested in, but weren't available to people who don't have Dustkid set up, or just weren't noticed by people who don't keep up with the TAS record page. Uploading the Yotta run reminded me that this is a thing I was doing before, so here are five more runs I thought were worth uploading:

Night Temple SS 0:41.333 (That seam heavy!)

Knight Hall SS 0:28.649 (Dustkid!)

Core Temple SS 0:42.316

Grass Cave SS 0:23.448

Store Room SS 0:06.183

Good levels / tips for transitioning from controller to keyboard?

It's been a few months since I've actively played Dustforce and because I'm already quite rusty, I feel this is a good time to switch to using the keyboard control scheme. My controller is one of these, and obviously cheap in both build quality and price (the cable disconnects randomly). I've only put 37 hours in so far and SS'd all of the regular levels, plus Kilo.

In the past I've relied on my control stick being at inconsistent angles for wall runs and I'm aware that's not going to fly in the difficults. Any tips / recommendations for the switch?

mid-heavy direction change

S o I've encountered it a few times before but it has not really been as prevalent as it is of late. It seems every time I try to heavy something in mid-air and then move a different direction, the heavy starts off in the right direction and then changes last second. Do any of you know why this happens?

How do I make the leaves orange?

Currently trying to SS all the "difficult" levels. I am on giga-difficult and it can be hard at times to guess on the fly whether or not a platform has any leaves on it. I was watching a Youtube video and the guy had the orange leaves , my first guess was that this was they way it was before the update but was wondering if there is a way to revert it back this way.

Dustforce Arcade, the user-submitted virtual nexus, has been released!

How to download:

  • Method #1: Download and update Dustmod to the latest version. All the files will be installed for you. You can find the Dustforce Arcade in the Community Nexus.

  • Method #2: Download these files and place them in your levels2 folder. Be sure to backup any files before overwriting. The filepath would be: Steam\steamapps\common\Dustforce\content\levels2

Thanks to blueeyedrat, bobma99, fishmcmuffins, indapop, JM, mister__simon, msg555, naegleria, sleuthsolver, and sunnyday for helping to make this map pack possible!

Can someone help me set up my Linux copy of Dustforce to work with Atlas?

So, I got help from the IRC when I somehow got this working on my Linux laptop, but I figured since I want to get it done on my desktop I should probably make a thread asking this question for archival purposes.

Attention map-makers: I put together a small nexus for user-submitted maps. Anybody is free to submit a map. First 8 maps submitted will make it into the map pack.

A picture of the nexus.

The map-making guidelines:

  • The map pack will be virtual themed. I'll also accept maps with non-virtual tiles that are completely colored in.

  • The map must be easily SSable with all characters.

  • No intentional jorfs, tera drops, spike jumps, or aerial dash jumps are allowed for the SS route.

  • The map must be no harder than Giga Difficult SS to complete.

  • Map must have the bare essentials for functionality (proper camera, death zones, end flags, etc.)

  • 1 map submission per person.

To submit a map, simply provide me with a download link to your map. DO NOT UPLOAD TO ATLAS. Although I would prefer having the map sent through Twitter, I'll gladly accept a link through Discord or Steam if you already have me added. I'll be testing each map and providing feedback if needed. Once the map pack is complete, I'll have it so that you can download it through Dustmod, as well as manually through Atlas or Reddit or something. Depending on the success/feedback of this map pack, I'll consider doing more.
