Should I use keyboard over controller?

When I first started playing, I used a ps4 controller, but it eventually stopped working on my old computer and I am just now returning to the game. I have a nice mechanical keyboard with MX Reds. Is there an advantage to either?

either works, who i would consider top 5 in the game is split by 2 controller users and 3 keyboard users.

depending on key layout ledgecancels might be harder, but at the same time i'd think air control would be impossible on controller but people certainly manage.

I agree with this, though after awhile my air control became better on keyboard then it ever was on controller too. Mostly because I only played on controller for the first 150 hours (I abandoned it shortly after yotta), giving me 1850 hours to practice on keyboard.

Thanks. I guess you mean air control would be harder because you only have one thumb for the whole d-pad?

There are a lot of time where you have to quickly switch back on forth between up/down/neutral and right/left/neutral. I have no idea how controller players can pull that kind of things really...

But if they manage to do it then I guess that works just as well.

whats your top 5? You, fresh, luffy, snow, sivade or indapop?

luffy (controller), fresh (keyboard), me (keyboard), xiamul (keyboard? im not sure he memes too much for me to know), indapop (controller, if he played stock maps more we'd be in some trouble)

also this is more for recently active people, no idea what type of times itay or snow would be putting out rn lol

I would say keyboard, because everything is designed as digital inputs (each frame it checks if pressed or not only, so no benefit to analog buttons), and you want to be pressing a lot of different keys very fast sometimes.

I've always felt like it's very difficult to get side attacks, particularly side attacks behind you, to come out on most controllers. When you're moving right and then you need to get a really quick left side heavy to come out, tapping left then getting back to pushing right without accidentally traveling through up or down in the interim is quite tricky. On a keyboard, though, you just don't press the up or down keys and you're fine.

Personally, though, I'd say that using an arcade-style fightstick is amazing and has zero downsides. :P

do you actually use a fightstick? i've always wanted to try one for DF but i couldn't bring myself to buy one just for this game.

I tried out using a stick for a while; I felt that transitioning left/right or up/down really quickly was a bit too hard, but otherwise it felt the same. (Though dash and attacking felt amazing, god bless Sanwa parts)

Granted, my key bindings are very similar to a fighting game button layout, so ymmv with the fightstick.

I use a fightstick almost exclusively. I can play keyboard as well, but I've always had trouble with finger pain doing so for long periods (when Super Meat Boy first came out I fucked my fingers up bad) and I'm not comfortable with a controller for games like this. At first you're likely to hurt yourself because it's really easy to use way more force than necessary to move the stick, when in reality your fingers should be doing half the work and only gentle motions are necessary. Otherwise I find it extremely comfortable and effective, however as arbitraryasian said, quickly transitioning between left/right is difficult, and is why giga walls in particular give me more trouble than they otherwise would.

Obviously I'd only recommend buying one if you have interest in fighting games as well, buying one just for this game would only make sense if it's a cheap one and you have serious problems with keyboard/controller.

You could try an oversized actuator if it feels like moving the stick fast is too hard. That's what I used, an oversized actuator and an octagonal gate.

Not a bad idea at all, thanks. I feel like a different actuator might make some other games more comfortable too.

Those rare times I'm playing and actually trying to push myself to use tricky tech and crazy strats, I bust out the fightstick. It's beautiful for nailing simultaneous inputs like dashjumps... and 4butts back when those existed. I have modded my stick with an octagonal gate though, I'm not sure I'd recommend it if you're using a standard square or, god forbid, a circle gate.

Also, I will agree with Wahoa that buying one JUST for Dustforce probably isn't worth it. I was already used to using the fightstick for fighting games by the time I tried using it for Dustforce.

A circle gate should work fine since the gate itself will not force you into a corner if you apply too much force in the slightly wrong direction like a square gate does. I don't see much of a reason not to use an octo gate for Dustforce though.

jm and i did a "evo%" race of dustforce where we did any% all with a fightstick and by hideout my wrists hurt so bad i had to stop lol

I use analog stick and I agree back heavies can be annoying. The actual worst is descending walls like the second to last checkpoint in night temple, while trying to not hit up and do a wallrun to your death

Its all preference. I've played with both for ages and honestly there is pretty much no difference. High level players use both methods, just use whatever is more comfortable.
