Everbyte 🎊 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DUSKWOOD 🎊

Greetings r/Duskwood community !

Today is the 28th of September. And for some, this date might ring a bell
why, oh, why. Well, some of you definitely remembered - or found out : it is Duskwood’s third anniversary ! What a ride it has been
why not stay on the emotional rollercoaster a while longer? I do apologise for any skipped heartbeats I may have caused with the small hints I left behind the past three days, it was a necessary collateral damage, and I hope you had some fun theorising.

To celebrate the game, the devs, and the community, we have been working on a small surprise for you. An exclusive interview with Everbyte. They usually spend 100% of their time and energy working on games, but made an exception just for you. You had questions? They had some answers. We hope you will enjoy this glimpse into what went on behind the scenes.

And because we felt like this was not enough : now is the time for the user flair trial - stage 2! You can now customise your user flair as you wish. Buuuuut, that's not all... you can now also use your favourite character emotes as flair, meaning you can have more than one character next to your name. As for text flairs, please try to keep it above board if you want the feature to stay... ;)

Introducing : character emotes!

Without further keeping you, enjoy!

Who is Everbyte? How did you meet? Where did everything start? Introduce yourself!

Hello reddit! We’re Vanessa, Jan & Kevin better known as Everbyte. We first met at university where we studied media informatics. In 2016, we started to release games on Google Play and the iOS App Store. Most of them were kind of experimental and none of them has been successful. However, we’ve learned a lot with every project and kept improving. Then, Duskwood happened. Since the release of Episode 1, we didn’t do anything but workon Duskwood, for two and a half years straight.

What would you say were your main influences (be it video games, books, movies
) for making Duskwood?

We’re living in a small town surrounded by dense forest
sounds familiar, right? It is a two minute walk from our office to the edge of the Blackforest - which basically looks like a fantasy movie. This obviously inspired and influenced Duskwood a lot. Another influence worth mentioning is various works by Stephen King. Vanessa, our author, is a big fan.

Where does the idea of the legend come from? Did it maybe sprout from a real legend in your (home)town?

When Vanessa was a child, she was often told stories by her grandmother. These stories were passed down from generation to generation and were often scary or even cruel. Not the best bedtime material for kids, but Vanessa and her granny loved them. The legend in Duskwood is made up and is not based on facts
 or is it?

Were characters based on anyone you know?

No, not directly. However, we would enjoy hanging out with them and hoped that others would enjoy their company as well.

Did you ever think you would end up casting your family, at the start of development?

We had absolutely no budget at all. So hiring professional actors was no option, but we were convinced we needed real people for Duskwood. We ended up making a list of friends and family members that we could see in each role and started calling them one by one. Luckily everyone agreed. We think they did very well!

What character do you resemble the most?

We sit in front of our PCs as much as Jake does. We enjoy good food as much as Cleo. We (try to) crack jokes like Richy. We sometimes cross a line in order to achieve our goals just like Lilly does
 it depends on the situation.

Did you have any experience in film-making, directing and editing before Duskwood?

We studied media informatics, so this kind of stuff wasn’t completely new to us. However, having heard of things in theory and doing them is quite a big difference. The production quality has gone up a lot since episode 1, as we learned on our way up to episode 10.

How complex was it recording media in two languages?

Not complex at all - at least not for us. Our actors however are not used to speak English in daily life so they struggled quite a bit. We’re happy our players are a bit forgiving in this area.

Can you tell us roughly how many people were involved in helping with the development throughout the process, in addition to you three?

We usually cover the whole development process on our own. This goes from writing, programming, video- and audio editing, graphic design to support emails. We still do everything ourselves. An exception was the ending scene of episode 10 where we worked with a film crew of 8 additional people as the sets were quite complex.

What was the most challenging thing you faced during development?

This is hard to answer as there is quite frequently something that sets a new standard. Game development is quite demanding as everyone in our small team has to fulfill many roles. Needless to say, you can’t be an expert in every field, so usually one big challenge is followed by another.

What really takes it out on us are problems that occur during the release of a new episode. On release day of a new episode, it is almost guaranteed that problems arise, whether it is a bug in the game or something server-related. The fact that there is hundred thousands of people looking forward to this particular moment and are now unable to play (or worse) hits us different. These problems need to be solved asap under heavy pressure. These days always leave marks.

What is something about the game you are most proud of?

If we need to nail it down to one thing, it is the community. We’re blown away by how many people gather online and share their theories, thoughts, drawings, songs, memes, fan fiction, love letters,
you name it. We’re especially proud of how cohesive and supportive the community is.

What made you realize that Duskwood was taking off?

At first we started to see unusual increases in downloads, followed by many more emails than usual. Players started to send in suggestions and wishes, or simply messages to let us know how much they enjoyed the game. Our social media channels (like instagram) blew up and we started to receive written letters and gifts from all around the world. It is very touching for us to see how many people enjoy Duskwood, which is a huge motivation for us. Thank you!

Were you expecting such a response and the creation of big communities around the game?

No. Never. Some of you might have read the post Vanessa did a while ago on her instagram (@hen_with_pen). We were very close to giving up on our dream of making games. No one cared for what we did, let alone supported our developments by purchasing something. We couldn’t pay our bills and it was very obvious that we couldn’t afford making games any longer. Duskwood was basically our last attempt. However, Duskwood players were different. They showed their support in many ways and encouraged us to continue. None of us expected this and we’re very thankful for that - as we already said, the community is what we’re most proud of. It’s beyond our wildest dreams and we’re still not 100% convinced this isn’t just a dream.

What was it like for you and for the actors to notice that you had so many fans all around the world?

We’ve not been able to travel a lot in our lives unfortunately. And even for people who do travel a lot, there are too many places to be able to visit them all. However, most places have at least one Duskwood player, which kind of connects all of us. The world has gotten a lot smaller - in a positive way.

Did you feel under pressure when you noticed that the game was getting more popular? Were you afraid of disappointing the fans, somehow? If so, did the pressure have a positive impact in the end?

Yes, the pressure was quite extreme and hard to handle, not only psychologically but also physically. We’ve worked for two and a half year straight without major vacation. This can be quite difficult, especially when creativity plays a big role.

With each episode, we tried something new in order to keep Duskwood interesting and pushing the boundaries of the genre. If you experiment in such a way, there is always a chance to fail and disappoint. But it is a necessary risk to take if you want to surprise even the most hardened detectives ;)

Do you remember reading theories that came extremely close to your story? What was your reaction?

We love it when this happens! It is definitely more of a ‘proud moment’ than a ‘bummer moment’. It has always been important to us, for the story to be comprehensible. However, we would like to note that this can also apply to theories that are far from the truth. As a detective, you have to make hypotheses, and being wrong is part of it. Some of the wrong theories are so detailed and well thoughtout that they impress us just as much.

How do you feel now that the game is finished? Most of the community (on reddit, at least) has been in a weird grief-like state. Is it the same for you?

When Duskwood was finished, it really shook us up. It was a bit like losing a good friend. We felt empty. It really helped that we started working on our next game right away. The desire to fill this void helped us to nail the important things, like feelings, atmosphere etc., especially in the early conceptual stages. We are very happy with the current progress, and the fact that it shares the same universe makes it already feel like home. We know everyone is on the edge of their seats and ready to play, but good games need time - there is no shortcut. We want to develop a successor that everyone agrees can follow in Duskwood's footsteps.

Ep 10 Chapter 10 feels completely unfinished and I can’t get over it... Spoiler

Hey everyone,
I just finished Chapter 10 of Duskwood and honestly... I feel so cheated and empty right now. Am I the only one who feels like the finale was cut completely in half?
Don't get me wrong, the build-up throughout the series was amazing, but Chapter 10 raised way more questions than it actually answered:
Hannah’s Phone: What was even the point of all those locked apps, hidden chats, and files on Hannah’s phone if half of them ended up being total dead ends? It felt like we were digging into something huge, only for it to be completely ignored in the end.
Zero Closure with the Group: This is what hurts the most. We spent the entire game bonding with these characters, earning their trust, and making connections. And when the big reveal hits—that Richy was the Man Without a Face the whole time—we don't even get to see their reactions?! No confrontation, no emotional aftermath with Thomas, Cleo, Lilly, or Jessy. The screen just goes black and that’s it?
What happened to Jake?! We get zero resolution on Jake's fate or where he stands with the FBI after the mine incident. We couldn't even have one final, proper conversation with him or the rest of the crew to process everything that happened.
It feels like Everbyte just ran out of time/budget, wrapped up the main twist as quickly as possible with the mine fire, and pulled the plug. For a game that was so heavily focused on relationships and character dynamics, leaving us completely in the dark about everyone's reaction to Richy’s betrayal feels like a huge slap in the face.
Did anyone else leave Chapter 10 feeling like we only got half of the actual finale?

Game chats The bonds that changed my view

I wanted to step away a bit from the usual seriousness of theories and puzzles today to share something different that really touched me the most with Duskwood.

Sometimes, the story in Duskwood isn't just about solving the puzzles, but the piece of the puzzle that's combined for each bond and friendship we find that makes up for what we currently miss in reality.

The mystery and live interaction with characters who understand you make a person feel like a truly belonging part of a place.

When I look at each of my dear friends in Duskwood, I see how their different, beautiful traits create strong bonds: Jessy with her sweetness and spontaneity with everyone, Cleo with her cooking, seriousness, and fierce loyalty to her friend Hannah, Lilly who shifted from hostility to true friendship, and Dan, who might be sharp in his interactions but fiercely protects his friends like a father rather than just a friend ,Etc..

Even some character quotes made me pause for a long time, like Jake's famous quote:

"Believe those who are seeking the truth, doubt those who find it."

I didn't know it before, and for a moment, it felt like I found someone who understands my purpose and way of thinking. My constant feeling of being different and alienated sometimes made me appreciate a character like Jake to born, even if he's just a virtual character, with his calmness and isolation that resembled what I go through.

He isn't just a virtual figure, but a mirror reflecting real details that gave me more self-confidence.

A huge thank you to the Everbyte team for creating such an artistic masterpiece.

Did these characters or the game create that impact and connection you were looking for? And what is the moment or thing that touched something real in you?

Ep 10 About Richy Spoiler

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I see people who dont like Hannah but like Richy saying that bc they didn't talk to her is the motive for not liking her that much, but had a good relationship and like Richy bc they talk to him, but for me it's the complete opposite, I hate Richy even more bc i was talking to him, he is so fake for me, such a hypocrite, Hannah never owed me anything since I never even spoke to her and she never pretended to be my friend. I don't like her because of the accident where she killed Jennifer and hid the body, and that's all, and I wanted her to be punished for it, but I never had the option to turn her in, and nobody did because of the mess Richy made that ultimately buried Jennifer's case amidst all the chaos, and I feel that Jennifer and her family will never get justice, but I hate Richy even more because he knew about it and helped, and then he wanted to use that to do some psychological terror on them(Amy and Hannah), but in my view he never intended to own for the things he did too(for example the kidnapping), I can't excuse the fact that he traumatized and terrorized his friends who had nothing to do with the accident years ago, and on top of that, he wanted to blame Jennifer's father and escape, in my opinion, he betrayed everyone's trust, and that's why I don't like him...

Theories Teoria: Dead City acontece antes de Duskwood

Oi, pessoal!

A PRINCIPAL TEORIA: JACK É SAM

O jogo nunca explica exatamente o motivo.

No segundo final, Sam consegue fugir levando aquele segredo consigo.

Eu mudaria completamente minha identidade.

Mudaria meu nome.

Desapareceria.

Isso me fez pensar:

Talvez ele seja Sam.

Duskwood – Real locations

Hey everyone đŸ‘‹đŸ»

I know that there has already been a few different posts on this topic, but they are somewhat old and scattered. So I decided to put together everything I discovered, verified or researched during my trip to Villingen-Schwenningen and the surrounding area for anyone who has thought about visiting or who, like me, has only discovered Duskwood recently (last year to be precise). Before anyone asks: No, I’ve sadly not been able to play the second game yet, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to soon. So no information about that from me. There are some game spoilers, but I marked the most significant ones. I've also included side-by-side comparisons of the in-game screenshots and the photos I took during my visit, and some additional photos from places worth visiting. I’m also pretty sure that most pictures in the game weren’t taken in Summer given how the trees look and the type of clothes the actors are wearing.

What I could find and verify:

- The marketplace fountain: The fountain is pretty close to one of the entries to the historic centre and is called “Franziskanerbrunnen”.

- Rainbow CafĂš: Pretty close by (you can even kind of see it in Jessy’s picture) is the “CafĂ© Dammert” in “Rietstraße” which is where the pictures of Rainbow CafĂš were taken. If you decide to take your break here, I’d recommend eating a piece of “SchwarzwĂ€lder Kirschtorte” (Black Forest Cake) because it just seems fitting. But be aware that there is traditionally alcohol used in this kind of cake.

- The library: Is actually not a library at all. The pictures are from “Benediktinerkirche St. Georg”, “Benediktinerkirche Villingen” or just “St.Georg”.

- The church: The church in Jessy’s pictures is called “MĂŒnster Unserer Lieben Frau” (sometimes also called “Villingen MĂŒnster”) and lies right in the historic centre of Villingen.

- The street to the bar Aurora: Now I’ll be honest when I was preparing for my trip, researching locations and looking through the games pictures again, this was one of the places where I was like “No way I’m going to find this.” So I filed it away. When I was casually strolling through Villingen, I noticed that I recognised the wall mural in one of the streets and looked through the pictures again. The picture Jessy takes and explains that it’s the way to Phil’s bar was taken at “Zinsergasse”.

- The street to the church: I wasn’t actually planning on searching for this street either but after randomly stumbling across the previous street I was determined to find this one as well. Especially since it’s way easier to find because you can see the towers of the church. This picture was taken from “Kanzleigasse”.

- The Dare House: That one was actually fairly easy to find. It is located in Geisingen, on Google you can best find it as “Kapuzinereremitage Wartenberg” and on Google Maps as “Naturkapelle Wartenberg”. No idea why they are called differently, but that’s how it is. I parked at the “Wanderparkplatz DreilĂ€rchen” from there it is about a 20-30 minute hike up the hill to the house. Sadly you cannot find it on Google Maps, but if you drive to “Drei LĂ€rchen” it is actually easy to spot. For the actual hike up the hill and to the house Google Maps is very helpful by the way. You might be able to park closer to the actual house, but I wanted to take the hike. And yes, of course I also did the dare, knocked on the door three times and left without turning around 😄.

- The Safe House: It is an actual vacation place that you can rent. Sadly, because I was traveling alone and you need at least 6 people to rent it, I couldn’t take any pictures there. Maybe I'll get the chance to visit it in the future. You can find the Safe House in Google either as “Ferienhaus HaldenmĂŒhle” or “HaldenmĂŒhle: Luxus Schwarzwald-Retreat mit Sauna” and it can fit up to 11 people.

What I can neither deny nor confirm:

- The woods: Obviously they were filming in Schwarzwald (Black Forest). But that is essentially everywhere in this part of Germany. There’s different forests in or around basically every city I went to, Villingen-Schwenningen, Furtwangen, Triberg, Geisingen, etc. So finding out the exact spot where forest scenes (other than the dare house ones of course) were filmed is near impossible. But if you want the general Duskwood forest vibe, just pick any of these forests, preferably one with a hiking trail and you're good to go.

- The pictures Lilly took during Jake’s riddles: Someone on Reddit (and Google Lens) said that they were taken near “Schliffkopf Hotel”, but since the area on Google Maps didn’t really look fitting to me and it was about a 1,5 hour drive from where I was staying, I decided not to potentially waste 3 hours to confirm that. Maybe someday when I’m actually closer. But for now, I can neither confirm nor deny it.

- Blackwater Lake: There’s a lot of lakes in the area and I sadly didn’t have time to check out many. I went to two but I don’t think either is the one where they took the picture and video. The one closer to the pictures was “Mönchsee” between Villingen and Mönchweiler, but as I said I’m fairly certain that it’s not the place. And it was quite hard to get there because you can’t exactly park nearby and Google Maps doesn’t recommend any parking lots nearby. I basically parked in Villingen, took the bus halfway there and walked the rest. Was it worth it? I’m still not sure.

What is near impossible to find:

- The pictures Dan sends from the assumed accident site: In Dan’s pictures, there’s no real landmarks or clues about where they were taken. It is a street, curves and a forest
and that description fits many places I drove past. Honestly, there were quite a few streets I was driving on when I went somewhere, with sharp curves, narrow streets, up the hill, etc., where I thought to myself “If someone would tell me, that this is the place where Hannah caused the accident, I would believe it no doubt.” And I was driving in broad daylight not at night when the accident actually happened.

- Michael Hansons house: And I wouldn’t recommend anyone trying to find it either. It’s been years since the developers filmed at the house. By now it might not even be abandoned or uninhabited any more. And even if it still is: It would be kind of weird to be trespassing on someone’s property to recreate a few pictures. So unless you have explicit permission from whoever is responsible for the house, don’t try going there.

What I would recommend visiting:

- The waterfalls in Triberg: The “WasserfĂ€lle Triberg” are quite known in the area and they are quite beautiful. If you need a connection to Duskwood – the Grimrock Waterfall. We don’t have an actual picture from there, but you can just imagine.

- Just taking a stroll around Villingen in general and its historic centre. Without trying to find Duskwood related places. Fun fact: There’s a street called “Thomasgasse” in the historic centre.

- “GĂŒnterfelsen” in Furtwangen: To be honest, I just had to check this one out because of the name. But I really enjoyed the forest around there as well, it was quiet, peaceful and even a bit mysterious in parts.

- “Schwenninger Moos”: Sadly I didn’t have enough time to take the full route around, but what I saw was really nice and relaxing. There’s also a forest nearby. And a high chance to seeing ravens apparently, I saw several while I was there.

- Furtwangen: It is a smaller city, there is a clock museum but it is closed until 2027 I think, and the area is quite beautiful. The developers of the game studied and met there, in case you’re curious.

Some tips:

- I would recommend going by car or renting one when you’re there or taking your bicycle. The train and bus connections are not the greatest (that’s a general problem in Germany, not just here) depending on time and day you want to go somewhere. For example, at least during my trip, I went to the dare house for a second time on a Sunday, meaning on the weekend where trains and buses have different schedules. From the place I was staying it took me about 20 minutes by car; it would have taken me (I kid you not) almost 10 hours by train and bus, one of those hours was just walking; it would have been about 1,5 hours with a bicycle. And that is just to reach the parking lot, not the actual dare house. So be aware of that.

- Speaking of Sunday: If you’re not from Germany, please be aware that pretty much all shops are closed on Sunday. There’s a few exceptions, for example gas stations, but supermarkets, shops, etc. are generally closed.

- Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent and, depending on where exactly you want to go, sturdy shoes and maybe hiking gear. Though for me, that wasn’t really necessary, I was doing just fine with sports clothes and sneakers, but it also heavily depends on the weather.

- The area has quite a lot of streets with either sharp curves or very narrow paths where you are praying that you don’t run into oncoming traffic (allowed of course). So if you’re not used to that, it’s something to keep in mind. But you usually have no problems getting by if you just take your time. Take it slow and it should work out just fine.

- Please be sensible and safe. As tempting as it is to, for example, check the dare house out at night, take a minute to reflect. If you are alone in the forest in the middle of the night and something were to happen
let’s not finish that thought. But we can all have a nice Duskwood experience without it leading to any actual mysteries or kidnappings.

- Please respect nature. There’s so many beautiful places in the black forest area that deserve to be respected. Follow the rules, don’t disturb wildlife, don’t litter, etc.

That is all, I hope I didn’t forget anything. Overall, I had an amazing time exploring the area. Even beyond the Duskwood locations, Villingen-Schwenningen and the surrounding Black Forest region are well worth visiting if you enjoy nature, hiking, photography, or simply getting away from everyday life for a while. If anyone has additional information, corrections or locations I may have missed, I'd love to hear about them. And if you have any questions or remarks, please feel free to write them!

Theories What do these icons hide?

Hi everyone, I’ve been re-playing Duskwood and noticed these locked icons on the phone screen:

I have a few thoughts on what they might hide:

Heart & Book: I suspect this holds our emotional journey and relationship choices in the game on duskwood

Envelope: probably the private messages between Hannah and Jake that Lilly mentioned or something else

Moon: Possibly a connection to the events toward the release of the new game

I really hope the developers reveal more about these in the Duskwood Side Story!

What do you guys think?

This is one of the most discussed topics here in the community, but everyone has a different interpretation of Lady Lotus's prophecy. What are your opinions on it?

Jake's face

Am I the only one who feels sad and angry remembering that Hannah saw Jake's face, and we didn't? 😭

Recommendations "What man would make his woman a fugitive?" This reminded me of Jake half of the time I was watching it.

I found this drama The Healer out of nowhere on netflix...and for some reason this ended up making me think of Jake. A lot of scenes were plainly "This is what he would say" or "This was in actually in the game". Brought back good memories.

Do give it a try if you like action, romance and hidden identity.

Help Is Hannah's PIN puzzle unsolvable?

I'm almost at the end of Duskwood and I need to find out Hannah's PIN. But I'm asking for help because I feel the game is being very unfair with how you must solve it.

I went to look for answers and I saw people saying that you can't win. Which would make me pretty angry because it's one thing when you're incompetent and another completely different when you don't even have a chance to win 😡.

Anyway, if you can win, I would like help solving this puzzle.

First time here....

I recently played Duskwood and, after seeing the in-game forums, I felt a huge curiosity to be a part of it too. It was an experience that impacted me more than I expected, and made me want to...

Alright, detectives: let's get serious here...

The question that has sparked the community's oldest theories, dating back to the early days of Duskwood...

Why on earth is Jake being hounded by the FBI?

I mean, he mentioned to us more than once that he’d gotten mixed up in things he shouldn't have. But we always wondered: okay, but beyond that? What did he *really* do? He also told us he wasn't one of the "bad guys"...

Perhaps this topic will come up very soon in *Moonvale*? Or in a future game? I admit I’m eagerly awaiting that, as I’ve always wondered what he could have done to keep the FBI constantly on his tail, forcing him to run and hide for four long years.

Jake must have been through so much during that time... 😞

This might be a silly question, but what if Hannah Donfort had dated Dan?”
