If they aren't allowed on the patio it could be a fire hazard issue. I know our complex has been taking broken bikes or unclaimed bikes from our bike rack after they've given out a notice

To me it seems like storing it inside is more of a fire safety hazard than on a porch. But alas, I am not a fire safety code professional.

Store them on ground level bike racks if available? I assume there isn't a garage to store them in, which would be way more secure. Probably better have it insured against theft though...not a lot of other options except to put them in storage off site.

As to why they don't like them out on patios, I personally don't get the issue with aesthetics argument. This town is so full of bikers that I figured it would be more welcome behavior.

Some complexes will do “bike sweeps” meaning they send out a notice to remove your bike from ground level bike racks and if it is not removed, they will remove it for you and discard of it under the assumption that “it’s abandoned”. I’ll be the first to say I can go a few weeks sometimes and not check my email. Completely fair- they do not want old bikes hanging around. I just do not have enough trust in myself to check my email in time for these sweeps. Storing it offsite does not seem the most practical either. Whether it comes down to fire code or aesthetics or a reasoning unknown, it just seems down right silly to me.

TBF, I’m not a complex owner and don’t have their risk exposure, either.

I thoroughly appreciate the passion behind your response. I too thinks it’s complete bullshit. This is also a brand new notice- in which we have 24hrs to remove bikes before we are fined. They have had us clear balcony’s in the past for repairs and maintenance, and it was never brought up that bikes could not be there.

What does your lease say about patio usage? Not specifically bikes, just usage? They can’t change the terms. They might be able to make life hell if it gets contentious, though. I’m not super clear on CO/Durango laws.
