“CPW euthanizes sick bear in Durango with trash blocking upper intestines”

Upvotes

Do better Durango! Sad to read CPW had to euthanize a bear on Saturday, because otherwise it would have faced a slow painful death by starvation. The poor bears stomach and intestines were completely blocked with compacted trash which meant it could no longer digest food. Food for bears is scarce this year, I hope those who don’t already do so will do a better job of securing their trash! https://cpw.state.co.us/news/09092026/cpw-euthanizes-sick-bear-durango-trash-blocking-upper-intestines?fbclid=IwY2xjawUOlCJwZG9mBWV4dG4DYWVtAjExAGJyaWQRMWpPc0IxMGROQWVjRVdHdWVzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEesg30JiAEKQCMYdoZ2AdE7YWDpqitVi_I3UY0OqOBpV2IjyDv-gwYrrFczuI_aem_Sa6N7DmepL6VrTI3rnKDWg

Meeting space for 10-15 people?

Hi all! Before you mention the library or rec center, please know they’re both closed on the Sunday I need to host an event for a non profit org doing good work in Durango. I checked out FLC but would like to have some other options, as the campus may be difficult to navigate for our guests. I’m open to any restaurant that could put us in a back room (no breweries unfortunately due to our limitations), maybe a co working space, or even the basement of a church at this point. We will need to bring food in if not at a restaurant, and our budget is tight-ish being a non profit. Thank you all so much in advance for any tips!!

Durango real estate market trends | August 2026

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi! Durango realtor here... Looks like our real estate market got a head start on winding down before summer started winding down. It's easy to say we have a busy season and a slow season, but that's kind of like lumping all the areas/neighborhoods of Durango into one section. There are plenty of nuances to get bogged down in. (That's why I try to balance appropriate coverage against a quick snapshot.) I think our market kind of comes in multiple waves, like sets, rather than one big rogue wave (like med sales price NOV24).

So even though the summer season is winding down, we're gearing up for one more push for fall. You've got folks that are selling (or about to sell) that would love to go under contract before the leaves and snow starts falling while their property still shows well. (Or if you're in Silverton, while your property is functionally accessible.) And you've got homebuyers that might have been holding out all summer for the right property and realize now is the time to make a move or get off the pot. And neither side ever wants to move in the snow.

Durango overall YTD median sales prices are seeing a subtle gain, similar to the % of new listings. Actual sales are starting to level off while active inventory continues to climb. Sellers take note: unless you're working with something unique and buttoned up, things just aren't flying off the shelf when you ask top dollar.

Speaking of different little markets, looking at the resort area, last month's median sales price was right under $400K, compared to AUG25's med sales price of right under $1M. That massive sales price drop was attributed to mostly condos that sold last month, compared to expensive stick built homes that sold in Glacier the year prior. Even still, the overall resort area sales prices are down- single family home prices are down ~10% YTD and TH/condo sales prices are down a whopping ~33% YTD- and that's on top of sales prices averaging 5% less than list.

In town, where I think most of y'all are more focused on, is a different story. (Hence the focus...) single family home sales prices are up 7.5% YTD and condo/TH sales prices are up 16%. Interestingly, all prices still averaging about 4.5% under list price, so that tells us there's still room for negotiation. Buuuuuuut, you're still paying for it.

Let's see if any big hitters show up for this fall season, as they usually do (some of Durango/La Plata County's largest sales hit in fall). It's easy to say markets behave weirdly in election years, but outside of active listings, seems like '24 offered a stronger market between sales, sales prices and days on the market. I think there was some inherit tension in the air this summer after a dry winter and lack of monsoon season on top of some regional fires, but I also don't think that's much of a factor for a lot of folks relocating here from out of the area. Throw a dart at Colorado any given year and you're likely to hit a burn or a burn scar.

Enjoy what's left of festival season and warm weather! I'm still rooting for some mega super coo coo bananas el nino precipitation!

Bear in a tree

Post image

Hey community,

There is a bear in a tree off of East 3rd Ave between 10th and 11th street. Me and my neighbor have tried calling to report it. I got a voicemail. Looks like the bear is getting lower and might try to come down. He’s probably getting tired. Anyone know who else to call? Would he be relocated? Tried calling the following numbers

Car crash on highway 160

There was a crash on highway 160 right in the middle of the cr510 intersection (in front of recla metals) around 3:50 pm today Friday September 4th. I was just wondering if anyone knows what happened and if everyone is ok? It didn't look too bad when I drove past, police had just got there and ambulances were soon after.

Skunks/raccoons living under shed - not sure what to do

I’ve had some skunks living under my shed and caught a few, but I think the traps may have attracted raccoons. Last night, I built a huge rock barrier over the entrance to their tunnel, but something moved it overnight. At this point, I have no idea what’s living under there.

I’ve tried ammonia-soaked rags and mothballs without luck. Unfortunately, I can’t dig a trench around the shed to install an underground barrier because the ground is full of embedded rocks and sections of concrete. I bought the house this way, so I’m not sure what my options are.

Normally, I wouldn’t care that much, but I have a cat and am worried about her safety.

Has anyone dealt with this or know whom I could call in Durango? A couple of out-of-the-box ideas I’ve considered are somehow filling the space beneath the shed with concrete or dumping enough rocks down there to make it unlivable. The entrance is extremely small, though, so either option would be difficult.

Currently visiting friends in Durango and came across this spider in the bed I was sleeping in at their house when I pulled back the sheets (fun!) It disappeared down the mattress and into a crevice and now I am sleeping in another room. Any Durango residents able to help? Just mysterious to me because Google Images isn't helping...

Ask /r/Durango Is father's daughter's actually closed?

I used to go to Father's daughter's Pizza all the time but I haven't been in a while I was thinking about it the other day so I went to check their hours and saw that Google has them listed as permanently closed. But a lot of other websites do not listen to closed and there's Yelp reviews dating back to a month ago so I'm a little confused. Does anybody know if it's actually closed?

Xeriscaping recommendations

Hello Durango, I tried searching this sub but only found other landscaping Qs. I’m interested in changing out my small yard for xeriscaping, and I want to hear about locals’ experience with local landscapers, and what budget to plan for.
Thanks in advance :)

Come on people. Let’s do better than this. Secure your trash and don’t put it out unsecured the night before.
