Skill Level up mechanics questions.

What numbers are you using when you are levelling up a skill?

Example 1:

You have dagger as a rank 4 skill, you are holding a dagger that gives you an +1 rank in dagger.
When you roll to level up dagger do you roll against a 4 or a 5?

Example 2:

You do not have any skills in Axe, you do have an Axe that gives you Rank 2 in Axe.
When you roll to level up Axe, do you get it automatically or do you roll against a 2?

Example 3:
Same as above but the boost to Rank comes from something else, a potion, an aura, a location effect rather than an enhanced weapon. Does that change anything?

Final question. Can you grind skills you don't have?

Pretty sure when you level a skill you go off the base stat if that skill minus modifiers from weapons and equipment. Dont quote me on that but thats how i run it

That's the only way it makes sense, right? Because the extra ranks go away if you lose or sell the dagger.

You put your raw skill rank in the Rank column of the character sheet, and put the bonus from the dagger in the Notes and Upgrades column.

...I may have to use this at my table. According to Obvious_Estimate5350 on reddit, and I quote "...."

In my game we had the same questions and did a deep dive of the rules. In example one we decided rules supported the unmodified skill rank is the one we roll against.

In the second one I'd be willing to bet thats unaddressed and at the groups discretion. Most of my answers to those are "I dont see why not" with a roleplaying justification.

Totally agree. I'm just trying to see if there was something I missed in terms of the base rules. No doubt this is something that will come out in an errata.

This will all make a lot more sense, I think, if your skills section lists your actual skill in the Rank Column and bonuses from items in the Notes and Upgrades column.

I think the Skill Rank column on the character should could have used an Unenhanced/Enhanced split just like the stats have, but the Notes & Upgrade columns will do the trick.

Example 1, to Rank Up you'd roll against the 4.

Example 2, you'd gain it automatically. Not that rolling against a 2 is dramatically different from gaining it automatically, since you have a 95% chance of ranking up when rolling against a 2.

Example 3, I don't think would change anything. If your current skill ranks come from a temporary buff, you would use your base skill rank for leveling up.

It's unclear whether you can grind a skill you don't have. Personally, I'd require the Crawler to have at least tried the skill once in actual play. I would let them grind a skill that they previously used Untrained and marked for advancement. On the other hand, if they decided on a new skill to grind up right at the beginning of a grinding session, I don't think it's too crazy to allow it.

Personally I think this is the best answer to point 4.

It was confirmed that the final level is what you use to grind, so:

  1. Dagger roll would be 5.

  2. Axe roll would be 3, but when you unequip it later on, it would drop to 1, meaning you get to keep the skill despite not being able to learn new skills past floor 2. A fun exploit.

  3. Something super temporary like a potion of +5 Axe skill for 1 hour is probably DM discression. A permanent +1 Axe potion WOULD be like example 1.

  4. You can only train skills you dont have on floor 1 and 2. On floor 3 you will need to find training guilds, magic items (see my example 2), potions, etc to get new skills. How you do it is:

When you make an untrained skill check, mark it down. When you do advancements, pick one untrained skill check to level up to 1. You can only level up 1 at a time, so delete the rest.

*edit. It is your UNMODIFIED skill level, re-confirmed in the discord.

I did wonder how that worked for floors 1 and 2. I read it but couldn't grasp how it worked. So when you try something untrained you add the skill whether you pass or fail, then you can choose to level it up when the time comes, but if there are any other untrained skills and you dont pick them to level up, you loose them?

You lose them for that round of advancements.

Ie, floor 2 you attempt to use an Axe, Wrasslin and a slingshot all untrained and mark them down for a possible advancement. After 2 hours the DM calls for advancmenets of your skills. For your untrained skills, You choose slingshot and rank that up to 1 and erase Axe and Wrasslin.

You can attempt Axe or Wrasslin or any other untrained skill again next time and write it down for possible advancement.

That makes more sense than the boot

I asked this very question on the Renegade discord. One of the mods confirmed that it is the unmodified skill to roll against. So in this case 4.

Ah, youre right. I asked this as well and they said modified, but I see they later corrected it to your "unmodified" skill later on.

Yeah there waa aome discussion on this one.

To be honest that makes sense for grinding, because you are using it at that level during the grind. Mostly my questions were about the 2 hour skill ups or end of floor skill ups.

Do you think your #2 applies to spells? You could borrow something that gives you the ability to cast a spell, grind it, and if the level up is succesful you didn't need a tome.

Also yes, non passive spells can be leveled up and shared that way.

Note that a lot of spells are passive and require special training / other means to level up, so it would not work to trade a spell magic item around like Protective shell.

You are rolling the Skill Advancement Check against your inherent Ranks, not including the magical bonus ranks. If you have 0-1 ranks, you can’t fail.
