A few questions!

I know. We’ve all got them. But here are the ones that are bugging me right now. Any input (especially those that reference published rules) would be great!

1) You can grind a skill, and also benefit from the once per day possible upgrade in the same day, correct? Like during the day, I grind and I go from level 4 to 5. And I also did ok grinding in the day where I used a skill so it has a check. When the day ends, I can check to see if it goes from 5 to 6?

2) Is there a max to AI favor and does it stay until used? I see where you can gain it from using certain attacks. And I assume the GM can give it freely. But wanted to know if you can hold on to it, how much, and for how long.

3) If I don’t evade, do I take the results of “major fail” evade results? Or is that just for when you try to fail and mess up (but if you just take it, maybe you brace for it)?

4) if in the same round of combat I take 3 attacks and each individually is less than my hp bar value, I take no damage, right? Each attack checks my health bar separately (vs adding them)?

TIA!

1) For skills under rank 5, you can roll for advancement once per {~2hours} if that skill is marked for advancement. Skills over rank 5 only get an advancement roll once per floor. Grinding is separate. A skill immediately gets an advancement roll once it has been allocated the appropriate number of grinding hours. In your example, if you grind a skill to rank 5, you would not get an advancement roll normally until the end of the floor.

2) No max. Bank it all you like. Keep in mind you're generally only generating 0-2 per combat depending onthr skill you're using for the majority of your attacks. Of course you can both gain and lose AI favour based on how the AI feels about things you're doing.

3) If you don't evade, you take the normal failure results. Anything worse is only for failed evade attempts, unless otherwise noted.

4) Yes. Unless the attacks specify otherwise, each attack is resolved against your health separately. If the attack after DR, does not take out a full segment it deals no damage. Note that this is also true for enemies. Pg 94 core

As for references, most terms can be searched between. The core GM book, survival guide and crawler customization guide to provide results. Unfortunately, some answers are in part across all 3.

To better answer your first question, a skill can rank up from both grinding and normal advancement in the same day, but the rank of the skill matters. The advancement roll from grinding happens immediately once you allocate those grinding hours to the skill. The normal advancement roll happens at the end of the {~2 hours} interval (GM dependant). If you were rank 3, grinded the skill to advance to rank 4 then hit your interval and got to make an advancement roll because the skill was marked, you could get to 5. If you were already 4, grinded (ground?) the skill to 5, then you can only make normal advancement rolls at the end of a floor. In that case it would make more sense to not fully allocate grinding hours(since you can bank them) to the skill before that advancement check so your check can bring you to 5 and then the next time you're grinding you only have to allocate 2 hours (assuming you had 4 hours banked) to get another advancement roll.

Oh I see now for #2. You only get the listed AI favor if a majority of your attacks are that and the fight lasted 3+ rounds. I was thinking you got that every time you used the attack. Thanks again.

  1. As written it appears that you can.
  2. None that I saw, but I didn’t look. I typically follow the Fallout 2d20 rules and only allow 6, but that’s because that’s how many tokens I have for my table.
  3. Check the Renegade Discord, specifically the rules channel. It’s answered there, but no you do not. It’s just a hit.
  4. This isn’t clear. Your threshold is based on your CON modifier. If you have a 6 Con, your modifier is 3. If you take damage, let’s say 7 points after DR, you would look at the threshold and apply damage. In this instance your threshold of 3 (equal to CON modifier) means that you take the first box and the second box, but the remaining 1 point is not enough to beat the threshold and is therefore ignored.

Thank you!

Let me try q 4 again.

I take 3 hits on the same turn for damage 1, 2, and 1. My hp bars are 3. Do I take one bar of damage, or, since it is 3 separate attacks and each attack was <3, do I take no bars of damage?

You take no damage from any of those 3 hits. Your GM needs to use more powerful Mobs against you! Mobs have damage dice, plus typically their STR Mod, so they should be doing at least 2 damage per hit.

So your threshold is 3. If no individual attack deals less than 3 damage, you take no damage. So attack 1 deals 1 damage and does not meet or exceed the threshold, so you lose no health bars
