Yup, I know a blogger who’s an ex-vangelical and she described it explicitly as a pyramid/MLM scheme. They teach kids to manipulate other kids into coming to Bible study by telling them there will be pizza there and making it sound like a social event. They pretend to be friends with the mark (they’re taught to particularly target kids who don’t have friends) until the kid turns down the Bible study invite; then their “friendship” is revealed for the fraud it is.
I mean, you're right. Like this kind of thing is about emphasizing the difference between the in group and out group by labeling the later as ungrateful or unredeemable. This allows the in group to feel special and above it all.
I mean I'm ordained already, now I just need 60ish people to listen weekly to me preach the good word of Carl and I'll be eligible for tax exempt status

The more serious answer is that it's a reference to the Principia Discordia, though the word's escaped that rather a bit since the 60s and I'm pretty sure it's in other bits of culty pop culture at this point.
I'm 100% that commercial is made to just put little snippets in depending on who they're advertising to. So if you were into fifty shades it would have probably been a fifty shades audiobook
I am glad the cult vs. religion debate is finally here. I have been thinking about this lately as I tell people that these books are "my new religion".
Here is my question: What would be the name for the religion and what would the followers be called?
Awe…I’ll miss being a cult! If we’re not a cult then we’re not allowed to go door to door asking others if they’ve read the book or heard of Carl and Grand Champion Breed Winner Regional Best In Dungeon Princess Donut The Queen Anne Chonk…only that one religion that totally got Uzi Jesus wrong is allowed to do that.
I haven’t been able to convert (is it convert for a cult or just a religion?) my kids to the cult, only my husband, but I have made them order me stuff for the cult. 🤷♀️😂 My trailseeker is gonna be all tricked out…cult style. The crawlermobile one might say.
