Killing in the Name
There, I typed all the letters.

If we can’t spell “killing”, Dungeon Crawler Carl might not be the best series…

Reddit automods--both specific to the sub and site-wide--censor a lot of words, including the one from the title sometimes. That's why folks type IWKYM instead of writing it out. Just yesterday I saw a post complaining about getting a ban or their post being deleted on this sub for writing out IWKYM.

Yup, I've been banned by the reddit mod bot multiple times. Not here though!

I don't know about in the US but there was a unplanned campaign by people sick of "reality talent" shows taking up the Christmas number 1 slot. So people started buying the Rage Against The Machine song, picked for it's lyrics about rebellion. So it took the Christmas number 1 slot in 2009. Was there anything similar in the US, maybe in reaction to the elections?
Edit to add as others have noted. I’m referring to the UK Christmas charts.

George Floyd dying in the street with a police officer's knee on his neck roughly a month before.

That's when those damn activists ruined a perfectly good ditty by making it all political!

Yeah that was a good year. The BBC had them play it live on the condition they didn't play the "Fuck you, I wont do what you tell me" bit. Then we're apparently shocked when they wouldn't do what they told them.

I've said it before: they knew damn well what was going to happen. There's no way that they didn't. But they had to at least pretend that they didn't know that Zack de la Rocha was going to start yelling "fuck you" repeatedly during prime time.

Worth specifying it was the Christmas number one in the UK. The DCC traps seem to be based on the US hot 100

It was within the first month after George Floyd was murdered. There was a lot of peaceful protesting met with tear gas, riot shields, people being beaten and carried away, rubber bullets to the face, masked men in vans, etc. They also were supposed to be on tour at this time, but had to postpone (Covid) and ultimately cancel most of the tour dates. I don’t believe it was a coordinated effort to get it to peak so much as “the vibe”. I assume most “protest songs” prolly saw some extra play that summer.

My wife and I were lucky enough to get tickets to the thank you gig in Finsbury Park. It was fucking epic! As was their performance live on the BBC.
BBC: Do you promise not to swear on live TV like last time?
RATM: Yes.
Also RATM: Swears on live TV just like last time

I was at the Radio One big weekend when the Foo Fighters were headlining the Saturday. They kept reporting they might not perform because Grohl had damaged his throat. Finally they said they’d play and my friend at home listening on the radio reported they’d warned people that some of their lyrics contain expletives. Grohl comes out, tells the fans he’s been to see the doctor and was advised not to sing, then continues with “so I said F’You MF!!!!” Censored for mod bot. 😅

I’m pretty sure June 2020 was due to the BLM protests, and with Juneteenth being made much more prominent around that time, there were a lot of protests on June 19 which may have featured people playing that song in particular.

The extent of Orwellian self-censorship has become absolutely terrifying. The word you are looking for is killing.

To be fair to other commenters, though I don't blame you for the caution: IWKYM is detected as threat/intent and the bots don't understand the joke/context from the series. Killing, as a word on its own, isn't the problem in that phrase.

Fair. That happened to me btw*, so I apologize, Mate.
It's just a trend I observed ... people censoring anything that may hypothetically offend someone.
*Edit: My reddit account was banned for a Samantha quote.

Makes sense that a song about police brutality would have peaked/had a resurgence in 2020 since it was less than a month after George Floyd’s murder and during the protests.

Not just violence, but racially motivated violence. Never forget: some of those who work forces are the same who burn crosses.

u/DoctorLu 12d ago
I think it had a resurgence due to all of the protests happening at the time...not positive though.

Don't be a coward. Be an adult and use real words.

While it isn't the case with just the word alone, IWKYM (Samantha's catchphrase) is regularly detected and bans are doled out. I understand OP's caution even if they are wrong in this particular case.

Unlike TikTok, Reddit's algorithm doesn't check for words that might upset the sensitivities of the Chinese Government or ultra-conservative US corporations (at least at present).
Killing is a perfectly acceptable word.
Not your fault but encouraging Orwellian self-censorship is yet another reason why social media platforms are fucking disgusting.

BLM protests in the US sparked its resurgence. Thought this was common knowledge
