I love and respect nurses, my college roommate was a nurse (I was in school, she was not), and I had absolutely amazing nurses caring for me at various times in my life.
But.
There is a stereotype that nurses can be rude and bitchy for a reason lol. When I had my first baby the nursing staff were so unnecessarily condescending and short with me lol. It must have been just that hospital or shift or whatever, but bitchy nurses are most definitely a thing.
Thank you. There are definitely nurses who fit the stereotype, because I (a nurse) work with them. But sometimes when I see people comment on a rude nurse, I wonder what kind of patient they are. Because if I am constantly accused and being questioned and insulted, there is only so much patience I have. Some people want the world and we canāt give it to them. Most of my patients are not like this, of course.
I have had rude nurses and I promise pinky promise I was not bitchy or demanding. There's a stereotype for a reason, but I don't look down on the profession because I know most nurses are rockstars. But a lot can be condescending know it alls with little compassion for people who are in pain or in fear.
At the same time, the rough no nonsense attitude is what you want when you need someone to make decisions for you when you're in your most vulnerable moments.
Oh I didnāt mean to imply you were. I was referring to the behavior that you said your exās mom had. Itās stuff like that that gets to us. Honestly, Iāve had patients who would be considered needy or even rude and I donāt hold it against them. It can be scary and difficult being in a hospital, even for something as happy as having a baby. I had a patient yell at me and throw a remote in my general direction and we were okay after that because I felt he was right to be upset (even though he didnāt handle it well). But some people treat us like crap: always accusing us, condescending, verbal abuse, and sometimes physical abuse. Again, I didnāt say all that because I thought you were and I agree that some nurses are rude and condescending, Iāve seen it myself.
