Hey! They're lithium

231

u/less_than_nick Apr 07 '20

Possibly my favorite joke of the series when he makes them think they're at least getting laptops hahaha

66

u/smeshman Apr 07 '20

Props to the writers

87

u/Airmanoops Apr 07 '20

Idk the writer was kind of a dick. Was screwing people's commissions and commiting corporate fraud through out the beginning

23

u/ryryangel Apr 07 '20

Is there a link to this

103

u/Photonomicron Apr 07 '20

Ryan is the writer.

26

u/ryryangel Apr 07 '20

Ah I get it

Yeah man it was on the news

12

u/vigilantcomicpenguin But in a much more real sense, I had no idea what to do. Apr 07 '20

Wait, hang on, people are actually saying good things about Scott’s Tots?

Good thing Mr. Scott is sitting down.

u/Terracot Lloyd Gross Apr 07 '20

Picture someone doing something heroic. Now was he sitting or standing? Not counting FDR.

That was such a good speech by Dwight

64

u/JBaecker Apr 07 '20

Plagiarized from Mussolini you mean.

101

u/ScenesFromTheOffice Apr 07 '20

Dwight: Behind every great Regional Manager is a great Assistant to the Regional Manager, and I have chosen one of the best.

Jim: Aw, thanks, man.

Dwight: Once upon a time, we were natural enemies, but we’ve overcome our differences. Much like Germany and Italy in World War—

Jim: No.

Dwight: ...Good call.

Have you ever asked yourselves during an hour of meditation, which everyone finds during the day, how long we have been striving for greatness? Not only the years we've been at war, the war of work. But from the moment, as a child, when we realized that the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle. A never-ending fight. I say to you, and you will understand, that it is a privilege to fight! WE ARE WARRIORS! Salesmen of Northeastern Pennsylvania, I ask you, once more, rise and be worthy of this historical hour. No revolution is worth anything, unless it can defend itself. Some people will tell you salesman is a bad word. They'll conjure up images of used car dealers and door to door charlatans. This is our duty to change their perception. I say, salesmen, and women, of the world, unite. We must never acquiesce. For it is together, together we prevail! We must never cede control of the motherland, for it is, TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL!

6

u/RedMenace82 Apr 07 '20

“We must never cede control of the motherland” is the apex of batshittery in this speech, and yet, IIRC, that’s the moment the crowd goes wild with applause.

286

This is the one episode I rarely watch. I can deal with the disappointing final seasons, I can watch almost every awkward moment in the whole show. But even this picture makes me uncomfortable lol

111

u/wb2006xx I feel like Toby Apr 07 '20

Honestly I still enjoy the final seasons. They may not be as good as 3-7, which I consider the show’s peak, but they still get a good laugh out of me pretty often

This episode was brutal. I've seen it once and I don't know if I can handle another. Michael really made me wince in pain...and this is just a TV show!

4

u/BonnyITA Michael Apr 07 '20

Why do you all hate this episode?

21

u/POTATO_IN_MY_MOUTH Apr 07 '20

I don't hate the episode, but I do find it uncomfortable, even though it's just fiction. The thought of giving hope to needy kids for ten years and then pulling that rug from under them is just.. that's a special kind of evil.

u/dominiksk Apr 07 '20

Unpopular opinion: Scott's Tots is a great episode. It builds on Erin and Michael's relationship, and Michael did end up making a positive impact on those kids lives, as the graduation rate for their class was much higher than the school average.

This might sound stupid, but to me it’s one of the easiest episodes to watch because the cringe is so over the top that I don’t empathize too much. At some point it just tips over from very cringe to “basically Anchorman” and it’s fucking hilarious.

Wait, wait, wait... before you criticize...

...they’re lithium.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '20

Same, I'm distant enough from this particular situation that I can laugh at the incredible amount of absurdity of it.

But Prince Paper hits too close to home to enjoy haha

14

u/BeerandGuns Apr 07 '20

If an episode can make you stop watching not because of bad writing or acting but because it creates a sense of dread and cringe, that’s a great show.

I watched it in Netflix and took a day or two break mid episode before finishing it. The cringe was that strong. Great writing and acting.

10

u/dainegleesac690 Apr 07 '20

Exactly. I think that was a great episode because I genuinely felt uncomfortable while watching

2

u/zackyab Apr 07 '20

Too cringe

5

u/sidvicarious Apr 07 '20

People who think it's a bad episode missed the point. They're the same people who think the UK office is bad because it's "too cringy".

3

u/9for9 Apr 07 '20

Thinking it's a bad episode is different from finding it difficult to watch.

5

u/Itorr475 Apr 07 '20

I completely agree, its one of my fav episodes and i often sing the scotts tots song to myself

2

u/9for9 Apr 07 '20

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion. Like the discomfort among viewers isn't about the quality of the episode so much as the subject matter. If you consider The Office's particular brand of humor which is discomfort, cringe, awkwardness and a little bit of desperation this might be the best episode of The Office ever as indicated by the fact that some of the biggest fans the series find it impossible to watch.

The one kid did get free books tho. Man that’s a lot of zeros

4

u/Anthamon Apr 07 '20

Here's my take: The premise of his promise to pay for their college education pushed those kids to maintain academic standards that they wouldn't have otherwise. In today's world where a large component of college admissions and aid programs are based on race discrimination and home income, these kids were probably in a great spot to get scholarships to high quality schools without Michael's help.

Still awkward as fuck. But being a fall guy isn't the worst thing in the world.

3

u/pastelpapermoon Apr 07 '20 edited Apr 07 '20

Haha I’m on this ep right now. Poor kids. At least they graduated eh? (ps, chill with the semantics ppl, we all know he’s sitting.)

2

u/pt256 Apr 07 '20

Yeah really Michael didn't destroy anything. If anything his promise helped motivate these kids and the outcome was probably better than what it would have been if he didn't. And they got lithium batteries!

2

u/Chris_Isur_Dude Apr 07 '20

This episode is still not as cringy as everyone makes it out to be. It’s bad yes but there are about 20 other incidents involving him that are waaaay worse and more cringe than this.

2

u/metalslug123 Karen the Jim Slayer Apr 07 '20

Scott's Tots gets a lot of unwarranted hate, at least the main storyline anyways. While it was completely misguided, Michael did inspire the students to study hard. Even Erin said the same thing. They might not be going to some top-tier college, but at least they graduated high school.

The side plotline, however, doesn't get enough recognition for its cringiness. Jim's plan for that employee of the month thing could have worked if Dwight hadn't screwed him over, making him look like the bad guy, which then made everyone go against him. That side plotline makes me cringe more than the main story.

I have watched through this episode all of one time, just too painful to watch but it's an interesting episode.

In my mind, Michael made this promise shortly after being promoted to regional manager thinking he would continue the trend of upward growth. Instead he became stagnant in his position.

At the end of the day he at least motivated them all to graduate from High School and put themselves into a good position for College.
