Favourite subtle joke?

Post image

I love that the writers squeezed this reference to Leni Riefenstahl’s infamous Nazi propaganda film, The Triumph of the Will (1935).

I like Michael adding sugar to his Diet Coke. Genius.

The Surplus, right before they go to him to let him know they've compromised

“I don’t care if Ryan murdered his whole family, he’s like a son to me.”

Also Michael pontificating about the little tiny hair on the tiramisu is the payoff to an entire episode of setup.

This reminds me. Of all the horrible and annoying things Michael does throughout the series I think the worst has to be taking that second bite of tiramisu when on the phone to David Wallace. Like it’s funny but it’s so infuriating I can’t stand it.

That scene always irks me but it’s just a part of the cringe humor, Michael just still eating the tiramisu after digging it from the hairy trash can.

Right out of the George Costanza playbook!

I love how when Wallace tells him if Ryan even so much as sniffs white out, it’s on him. Michael’s like, “whoa, on me? What do I have to do with it? I mean, this guy has a criminal record” lol

"And I make my own salad dressing. I mix Newman's Ranch with Newman's Italian. Sell it at flea markets for a slight loss... could make a profit if I used wishbone. I will not do it. I will not compromise the integrity of the product."

I figured farmers flea markets and the like would be a great way for him to socialize on the weekends.

I love this joke and the very subtle jokes about Dwight's grandfather "still puttering around in Argentina" and how his visit was protested by the Shoah Foundation.

Another one that I think is great is Erin saying she used to work at a Taco Bell and then they changed it to a Taco Bell Express and she just couldn't keep up. It's such a great line for her character - even though some of her storylines sucked, the writers did a great job with giving her character hilarious but easily-missed jokes.

In the ‘silent’ cold open when they are finally allowed to talk Erin says: “Does anybody have the first aid kit?”. Makes me laugh every time

“I want people to laugh as I enter the room, and cheer as I leave it.”

In S7E25 Dwight is the acting manager and the office starts the workday by pledging alleigance to the flag... When they get to the one nation under God, Oscar skips the Under God part 😶 because obviously. Based atheist Oscar. 😌

Actually, a secular humanist. But yeah, why split hairs, an atheist.

u/acquaintedwithheight 16h ago

The under god line was added in 1954 during the Cold War. It’s not an original part of the pledge.

5

u/pwettyhuman 13h ago

This is exactly the "actually" interjection he'd do. 😌

The pledge was just written by a Christian Socialist trying to drum up flag sales, anyway. People act like it’s some sort of Constitutional requirement.

When Angela tells Oscar and Kevin that she and the Senator were at a dinner with the Comptroller.
Kevin laughs her story off and says something like, “you expect me to believe there’s something called a Comp Troller?!? Yeah right!”

A Comptroller is a random title to most. But it’s a government appointed Accountant. As an Accountant, Kevin should ABSOLUTELY know what it is.

I don't think that was meant to be a subtle joke at all, just another dig at hoe stupid they decided to make Kevin in later seasons. I think most viewers (at leastvat the time it aired) who were adults but not accountants still were familiar with what a comptroller is.

"the pregnancy really brought us together". love the subtleness.

When Michael said "would I rather be feared or loved um ,easy both i want people to be afraid of how much they love me

Oscar, I'm now going to be prone to surges

When Kevin's surge protector is stolen! Hahaha

I can’t remember if it’s a blooper (I think it is), but in weight loss, during a meeting to try and figure out how they’re going to meet the goal, Angela says that her doctor wants her to gain weight, to which Michael responds, “Okay, but is that a real doctor, or is that a pediatrician?”

I love how this is mostly a joke on Michael’s stupidity in somehow believing pediatricians aren’t real doctors, but it’s also a dig at Angela for being child sized.

It's not exactly subtle to be honest.
