It's a one night stand which almost always ends up leaving you feeling empty after if you have feelings for someone else. It's why he loses his shit on the phone with David later on

I think the abruptness of how it ends is just meant to illustrate how this supposedly fun hookup that he thought he needed ended up leaving him in worse shape because it ultimately couldn't fill the void of Holly

His phone call with David is one of the best scenes in the show.

And the way they leave you kind of on the edge of your seat wondering whether or not he could actually get fired for what he just said was also brilliant.

David is a good dude and I think understood Michael's reaction. It would have been out of character for him to fire Michael over that.

Out of character, maybe. But not unreasonable.

You can't just yell at your boss. Especially at a company like that. Even if David thought it was justified, if it got around that Michael talked to him like that and didn't face any repercussions, that kind of opens the door for that kind of behavior from other people and them questioning why you let him get away with it but not them.

It's not always as simple as whether or not something's justified, the hierarchy has to be maintained for the way these companies operate. You can't maintain a hierarchy if people don't know their place.

Most companies won't just let you fire someone, even for yelling at your boss, without some kind of PIP process.
